Astro Bot has claimed most of this year's accolades at the Bafta Games Awards, with Sea of Thieves receiving three awards.
Many organizations held their annual gaming awards earlier this year, with Astro Bot winning Game of the Year at The Game Awards In December — even though we designated Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth as our top pick for 2024, our personal Top 20 ranking .
The BAFTA Game Awards often show a strong bias toward British developers and seem hesitant to recognize Asian titles. However, this year they had no option as Sony’s game was nominated. Astro Bot secured awards for Best Game, Best Animation, Audio Achievement, Family, and Game Design.
That occurred more than any other game, however, the Brits were responsible for it. Still Wakes The Deep secured three awards, which were for New Intellectual Property, Lead PerformanceRole, and Supporting RolePerformance.
Helldivers 2 secured two awards for Multiplayer and Best Music, whereas other victors were Balatro for Debut Game, Metaphor: ReFantasio for Narrative, and Tales of Kenzera: Zau for Game Beyond Entertainment.
The previous Best Game champion, Vampire Survivors, received the Evolving Game accolade. Despite being largely underwhelming, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 secured the Technical Achievement award. Meanwhile, Thank Goodness You’re Here! was honored with the British Game prize.
Perhaps the most fitting victor of the evening was ex-Capcom composer Yoko Shimomura, renowned for crafting the legendary Street Fighter 2 score, along with compositions spanning across various genres including "Super Mario RPG," all entries in the "Kingdom Hearts" series, and even reaching into "Final Fantasy XV."
She received a Bafta Fellowship, placing her among esteemed figures in the gaming industry like Shuhei Yoshida, Hideo Kojima, Tim Schafer, John Carmack, David Braben, the studio behind Rockstar Games, Gabe Newell, Peter Molyneux, Shigeru Miyamoto, Nolan Bushnell, and Will Wright.
In addition to not mentioning Stanley Kubrick, Laurence Olivier, Judi Dench, and Floella Benjamin.
The awards ceremony was emceed by comedian Phil Wang and recognized achievements from works released between November 25, 2023, and November 15, 2024, with certain limitations regarding remakes and downloadable content (DLC) qualifications.
