Peter Dutton The coalition aims to address the housing crisis by reducing the number of international students in higher education by 80,000.

A significant decline in enrollments at universities and vocational education institutions is set to be revealed as part of Mr. Dutton's immigration strategy, according to reports from The Daily Telegraph.

This change would lead to a reduction in Australia’s intake of international students at public universities, dropping from a peak of 320,000 in 2023 down to an estimated 240,000 due to a proposed percentage limit.

The cap is anticipated to hover around 25 percent but will ultimately be decided by the government after reviewing the most current data and discussing with industry stakeholders.

Based on 2023 enrolments data, the Coalition expects the measure will overwhelmingly affect metropolitan – especially Group of Eight universities – where pressure on housing and infrastructure is most acute.
