The U.S. has imposed a 145% tariff on imports from China.
While Beijing has responded with a 125 percent tariff on U.S. products, Trump subsequently exempted items such as smartphones, laptops, TVs, semiconductors, and various electronic devices; however, it seems this situation shows no signs of resolution.
That's because Trump is awaiting a personal phone call from Chinese leader Xi Jinping, whereas Chinese authorities are hesitant about having Xi participate in an uncertain conversation that could turn out to be awkward.

In the meantime, companies dependent on goods from China are experiencing chaos, with numerous operations forced to stop deliveries completely due to the stringent tariffs.

Currently, owners caution that basic toys such as dolls might quickly turn into luxury items.
Nevertheless, technology firms such as Tesla and Apple — which manufactures the majority of its iPhones in China — will keep profiting due to Trump’s exception for electronic goods.

The tariffs are causing disruptions in supply chains to an extent not witnessed since the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Due to the extremely high tariffs on imports from China to the US, many businesses are left with no option but to cancel their orders," Lamar stated.
"The frequent changes mean that new tariffs aren't properly shown or forecasted until the merchandise reaches the port, leading to steep charges that result in unpayable invoices. This level of uncertainty and financial strain is something smaller businesses cannot endure," he noted.
“A prolongation of the truce in the trade war for US imports from China is necessary at this point to prevent the harm from becoming permanent.”

On Friday, a presidential directive concerning troops stationed at the U.S. border might appear as just another routine move—given that thousands have already gathered along the borderline—but this action signals a significant intensification in President Trump’s deployment of emergency powers, asserts Elizabeth Goitein, who co-directs the Liberty and National Security Program at the Brennan Center for Justice.
This directive mandates the military to assume control over federal territories alongside the border, thereby transforming these regions into de facto military bases.
By taking this approach, the administration contends that troops have the authority to briefly hold migrants who enter the border in these areas, employing the same detention powers they would utilize at any other military installation when dealing with an intruder.

The Trump administration has verified that Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the Maryland father mistakenly sent back to El Salvador, is still alive but being held at a well-known anti-terrorism facility managed by the Salvadoran government.
"He remains alive and safe within that institution. His detention is carried out according to the national sovereignty of El Salvador," declared Michael Kozak, a high-ranking State Department official, in a two-page sworn statement presented to a judge.
The sparse information offered by Kozak did not meet the extensive requirements set by U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis, who had instructed the Trump administration to brief her on both the location of Abrega Garcia and any actions being taken to ensure his return to the United States.

On Saturday evening, this announcement was succeeded by a social media post from President Donald Trump, indicating that he planned to meet with the president of El Salvador on Monday. In his post, he seemed to distance himself from the responsibility regarding the outcome for Abrego Garcia, apparently passing that duty onto the Salvadoran leader.
He posted on Truth Social:

Trump attempts to navigate contradictory stances on border emergency, analyst contends.

On Friday, a presidential directive concerning soldiers positioned at the U.S. border might appear as business as usual—since many have already gathered along the frontier—but this move signals a significant intensification in President Trump’s deployment of emergency authorities, says Elizabeth Goitein, who leads the Liberty and National Security Program at the Brennan Center for Justice alongside another director.
This directive mandates the military to assume authority over federal territories near the border, thereby transforming these regions into de facto military bases.
By taking this approach, the administration contends that troops have the authority to briefly hold migrants who enter the border at these points, employing the same detention measures they would use for unauthorized entries at any other military facility.
Goitein, in an
X thread on Saturday
, contended that the administration is attempting to employ legal maneuvers to circumvent strict provisions in federal laws such as the Posse Comitatus Act, which generally prohibits the military from engaging in domestic law enforcement activities. Additionally, they pointed out another statute mandating congressional approval for the Defense Department to assume control over federal territories except when at war or facing a national crisis.
As Gotein highlights, the administration announced in January that the nation was facing a "national emergency" due to an "invasion" at the border. However, by this month, Trump stated, “The invasion of our country has ended."
It’s about time for Congress and the judiciary to bring an end to all these attempts at seizing extra authority," the expert posted on X. "Immigration statutes ought to be implemented via legitimate methods, avoiding the misuse of emergency provisions, misusing wartime permissions, or attempting to circumvent the Posse Comitatus Act.

The law firm Susman Godfrey has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. government following their targeting by President Donald Trump through an executive order.
The company is handling the defamation lawsuit filed by Dominion Voting Systems against Newsmax.
The grievance states in part:
In the United States, as stated by John Adams, we operate under a system where governance is based on laws rather than individuals. However, President Trump’s series of Executive Orders targeting law firms and others, like the one issued on April 9, 2025, aimed at Susman Godfrey, poses a significant challenge to this fundamental principle of our nation. By using the authority of his position to retaliate against entities and persons he disapproves of through executive action, the president is misusing the powers vested in him. Our Constitution does not provide a president with such unchecked authority; indeed, many aspects of the Constitution were deliberately crafted to prevent any single individual from wielding arbitrary, unlimited power—the very thing the president attempts to do via these orders.
If the judiciary does not take decisive action now to reject this overtly unconstitutional executive order and similar ones, a perilous and potentially permanent shift could occur. Regardless of individual views regarding President Trump or Susman Godfrey’s legal actions on behalf of their clientele, eventually another president with distinct policy objectives and personal disputes might occupy the Oval Office. This subsequent leader may sincerely think that an altogether different group of entities or individuals poses "a threat to vital U.S. interests," echoing how Mr. Trump accused Susman Godfrey. Should these executive orders remain unchallenged, future leaders would feel unrestrained in targeting alternate adversaries out of retaliation. An act once considered outside acceptable conduct over the past 200 years risks becoming standard practice under such circumstances.
In simple terms, this could happen to any one of us.

On tonight’s segment on Fox News, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that the initial Trump trade agreement is nearly complete and revealed that over "15 proposals" have been submitted by various nations. This comes after approximately 75 countries reportedly contacted the administration with their interest.
"I hear that deal number one is nearly wrapped up; is that correct?" asked Sean Hannity.
Leavitt responded, "Indeed, this is accurate. There could be multiple agreements coming up shortly. Over 75 nations have contacted the administration, and over 15 proposals are currently being considered. Both the president’s trade team and the president himself are putting considerable effort into negotiating customized trade pacts with each nation that has expressed interest."
She went on: "No other president has dared to completely utilize the full power of the United States of America. It’s not only about our economic strength but also our military and national security prowess."
The White House has declined to furnish any roster of nations seeking to discuss new trade agreements with the U.S., as

Judge decides Trump administration cannot reduce funding for Maine school meals due to transgender athlete policy

On Friday, a federal judge decided that the Trump administration is not allowed to withdraw Maine’s federal funding for school lunches because of the state’s decision to reject a ban on transgender females participating in sports.
U.S. District Judge John Woodcock Jr. didn’t take a stance on the debate surrounding Maine’s rules for transgender athletes. However, he ruled that the U.S. Department of Agriculture did not adhere to appropriate legal protocols as outlined in the Administrative Procedure Act when it halted funding intended for state nutritional initiatives.
Maine Attorney General Aaron Frey, whose department initiated legal action to prevent the freeze, stated that the court’s decision by the judge in Portland, Maine, affirms that the Trump administration failed to adhere to the law when it "reduced funding for programs aimed at providing meals to schoolchildren and disadvantaged adults."
The conflict arises due to President Donald Trump's executive order prohibiting transgender women from taking part in women's athletics at educational institutions that receive federal funds.

Following the submission of a lawsuit against the U.S. government due to alleged targeting by President Donald Trump, law firm Susman Godfrey issued this statement: "The executive order aimed at Susman Godfrey is both unconstitutional and retaliatory. It must not be permitted for any administration to penalise attorneys merely for performing their duties, safeguarding Americans and upholding their constitutional rights within the legal system."
The statement goes on: "Right now, our company is under assault, but it might be anyone of us next. Considering our role as officers of the court, we have an obligation to confront this unlawful executive directive."

Can Trump's tariffs hinder emissions?

President Donald Trump’s sweeping global tariffs have stirred widespread anxiety about a severe economic downturn -- and curiosity, for some, about how it might affect the world’s warming climate.
Specialists suggest that a deceleration in global commerce could temporarily lessen greenhouse gas emissions, partly due to reduced burning of fossil fuels such as natural gas and petroleum used for transporting products through ships, airplanes, and trucks. However, this potential reduction in emissions linked to climate change would likely be overshadowed by significantly increasing expenses globally, hindering progress towards adopting renewable energy sources.

In response to President Donald Trump authorizing the military to seize control of public lands near the southern border, Representative Greg Casar has alleged that the president aims to shift focus away from the ongoing tariffs controversy.
A presidential memo issued on Friday night from Trump outlines a "gradual rollout" starting with a "restricted area within federal lands," selected by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, though this could later expand as needed.
Casar, a Democratic representative from Texas, posted on X: " Trump aims to divert attention away from his disastrous tariffs by mobilizing the military within our nation and focusing on immigrants."
He remarked, "Absolutely ridiculous, a misuse of our armed forces, and typical as ever."

President Donald Trump informed journalists onboard Airforce One about an order from a court to send back to the United States a man from Maryland who was wrongly deported to El Salvador. He stated, "Should the Supreme Court say we should bring someone back, I would comply with that. I adhere to the decisions of the Supreme Court."
Embarrassingly, counsel for his administration declined a court directive today requesting an update on the condition of Kilmar Abrego Garcia.

While flying to Palm Beach, President Donald Trump answered queries from the group of journalists accompanying him aboard Air Force One.
When questioned regarding the court directive to repatriate a Maryland resident who was erroneously removed to El Salvador:
If the Supreme Court ordered me to bring someone back, I would comply with their directive. I hold the Supreme Court in high regard... They command my utmost respect.
Regarding tariff discussions, President Trump mentioned that his administration is in talks with "many countries."
We are in an excellent spot.
Regarding his relationship with China particularly during the trade war, he mentioned that he has always had a good rapport with President Xi.
I believe something good will result from this.
Asked about the dollar:
We're the preferred currency. I believe the dollar will always remain... It’s truly remarkable.
On the bond market:
The bond market is performing well. It experienced a small hiccup, but I resolved that issue rather swiftly.
When asked how much the bond market influenced his position on the revised tariffs, he indicated that it had little impact. He went on to explain that the primary factor was something else entirely.
I aim to place the nation in an unprecedented economic situation. This is precisely where we ought to be.
Regarding the discussions in Iran this coming weekend:
I hope for an Iran that becomes splendid, excellent, and joyful. However, they should not possess a nuclear weapon.
Lastly, when questioned about his thoughts on who might triumph in the ongoing Masters golf tournament at Augusta, the president responded:
"They are all acquaintances of mine," and forecasted a positive outcome.

“The president asserted, ‘I excel at those things.’”
Trump then denied the bond market had played a role in his decision to pause tariffs.
Per CNBC:
This week, the bond market sent strong signals to President Donald Trump to alter his approach regarding his tariff policies before he ultimately reconsidered, possibly averting a potential disaster.
Trump’s surprising shift on Wednesday came after significant upheaval in the $140 trillion worldwide bond market, with a particular impact on the $47 trillion segment related to U.S. fixed-income assets.
With growing speculation that the alarming rise in Treasury yields was poised to trigger a cascade of issues for financial markets, the president gave in. This resulted in an intense backlash on Wall Street; subsequently, leading stock indices experienced a remarkable rebound, whereas bond yields dropped from their peak levels.
However, with stocks falling sharply once more on Thursday, concerns persist about the resilience of the markets, since the path forward remains highly uncertain, especially given the tumultuous occurrences of the last week or so.

Panelist Kevin O'Leary has become one of President Donald Trump’s strongest advocates in his trade dispute with China.
During his CNN appearance tonight, he advocated for imposing 400% tariffs on China with the aim of bringing President Xi Jinping to the negotiation table—not limited to trade matters either.
He emphasized this idea again, describing it as a "game of chicken" between the two countries. He argued that millions of workers could revolt against Xi if they lose their factory employment because the U.S. ceases purchasing products from China, leaving them without an alternative marketplace.
O’Leary went on to say that the U.S. is not in a recession — no matter what others say.

President Donald Trump doesn't seem likely to participate in the upcoming G20 meeting in South Africa.
He posted on Truth Social from Air Force One:
How were we supposed to attend the crucial G20 meeting in South Africa when discussions about land confiscations and genocide dominate the agenda? There’s talk of black farmers seizing property from whites and subsequently harming both the farmers and their loved ones. Yet, the media remains silent on these issues. In response, the U.S. has halted all financial support to South Africa. Does attending such an event align with our interests at the G20 summit? Absolutely not!

Law firm Susman Godfrey files lawsuit against the U.S. government following targeting by Trump
Saturday, April 12, 2025 at 12:44 AM

Oliver O'Connell
The law firm Susman Godfrey has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. government following their targeting by President Donald Trump through an executive order.
The company is handling the defamation lawsuit filed by Dominion Voting Systems against Newsmax.
The grievance states in part:
In America, as stated by John Adams, we have a government based on laws rather than individuals. President Trump’s series of Executive Orders targeting law firms and others, like the one issued on April 9, 2025, aimed at Susman Godfrey, poses a significant challenge to this fundamental principle of our nation. By using the authority of his position to retaliate against entities and persons he disapproves of, the President is misusing his executive powers. Our Constitution and statutes do not provide a president with such unchecked authority; indeed, they were crafted specifically to prevent presidents from wielding arbitrary and unlimited power—the very thing that President Trump attempts through these Executive Orders.
If the Judiciary does not firmly act now to reject this clearly unconstitutional executive order and similar ones, a perilous and potentially permanent precedent could be established. Regardless of individual views regarding President Trump or Susman Godfrey’s legal actions on behalf of their clientele, eventually another president with distinct policy objectives and personal disputes might occupy the Oval Office. This subsequent leader may sincerely assert that various entities or individuals pose "a threat to vital U.S. interests," echoing President Trump's allegations concerning Susman Godfrey. Should these current orders remain unchallenged, future administrations would encounter no barriers when aiming to counteract differing adversaries. Actions once considered outside acceptable conduct could thus turn into standard practice within just two hundred years.
In simple terms, this could happen to any one of us.
