Musicians such as Diamond Platnumz and Ali Kiba have transformed it into a major force continentally, working alongside celebrities ranging from Chris Brown to Jason Derulo.
Nevertheless, as the genre expands worldwide, seasoned professionals such as Abdul Sykes, a veteran with an impressive 26-year career, caution about potential stagnation.
"The understanding of earning income from streams reached us quite recently; we lack that education, and those who do know about it keep it within their circle for their own advantage," explained Skykes.
In 1976, the advent of audio cassettes added fuel to the persistent problem of music piracy in Tanzania.
The issue continues to persist even with government efforts like the Copyright Act from 1999 and the introduction of the Tax Stamp system in 2013.
A major cultural export like Bongo Flava suffers from piracy, which hampers artists’ earnings and their capacity to control their creations in the digital era.
"Streaming platforms represent the way forward, yet numerous artists lack knowledge about royalty payments or contractual agreements. Merely possessing talent is insufficient; one must also have a keen understanding of business," stated Dupy Beats, a music producer.
Even with the achievements of certain musicians, there is an increasing call for transformation within the sector. Abdul Sykes, a key personality in the musical world, has shed light on some of the severe challenges encountered by artists in Tanzania.
"The management agency responsible for my work earned $100 over several years. Can you believe? If not for anti-piracy laws and financial backing for studios from the government, we would continue facing losses," he stated.
Music authorities assert that Bongo Flava's beat harbors great promise, yet its prospects depend on safeguarding tradition alongside creativity.
While artists advocate for changes, the rhythm continues but not without a struggle.
