As US President Donald Trump’s sweeping trade tariffs begin to send ripples through advanced economies, economists and policy experts in Tanzania are urging the government to adopt strategies that will shield the country from potential economic losses.Mr Trump’s 10 percent tariffs, which came into effect over the weekend, are expected to trigger retaliatory measures from affected nations and heighten global trade tensions.Although Tanzania is not among the countries likely to suffer immediate, significant impact—owing to the relatively modest size of its exports to the United States—analysts say the country must not be complacent and should begin preparing for possible long-term disruptions.Among the first nations affected by the new US tariffs are Australia, Britain, Colombia, Argentina, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.The tariffs come at a critical juncture, with the African Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa)—which has granted preferential access to the US market for African countries including Tanzania—set to expire in September 2025. If not renewed, Tanzania could face new hurdles in accessing US markets.According to Bank of Tanzania (BoT) data, in the 2023/24 period, Tanzania exported goods worth Sh255.6 billion (approximately $107 million) to the US, while importing products valued at Sh950.2 billion (around $391 million). Tanzania’s key exports to the US include pulses, coffee, textiles and cashew nuts, while major imports comprise machinery, pharmaceuticals and laboratory equipment.In light of the evolving global trade environment, experts are calling on the Tanzanian government to diversify its trade partnerships and enhance ties with other regions, particularly within Africa and emerging markets in Asia, such as China and India, as well as the European Union (EU). Particular emphasis, they say, should be placed on maximising the benefits of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), while pursuing deeper cooperation with strategic partners like the EU and China.Commenting on the matter, Civic United Front (CUF) chairman Ibrahim Lipumba said Tanzania could mitigate any potential losses from the US market by expanding its exports within the continent and beyond.Prof Lipumba, who is also an economist, advised that Tanzania prioritise industrial development to boost local manufacturing for both domestic consumption and export. He also recommended that the country invest more in gold as a strategic reserve, especially during periods of global economic uncertainty.“Gold is considered a safe-haven investment in times of economic instability. The Bank of Tanzania’s ongoing initiative to purchase gold from local miners is a step in the right direction.”The BoT has announced plans to purchase six tonnes of gold during the current financial year to strengthen national reserves.Prof Lipumba also underscored the need for a well-defined economic diplomacy strategy to position Tanzania favourably in the evolving global trade landscape.“Tanzania doesn’t export many goods to the US and currently faces a relatively low tariff of 10 percent compared to China’s 54 percent,” he noted. “This presents an opportunity to attract industrial investments that could support both domestic growth and export-led development.”Prof Lipumba added that rising tariffs have already contributed to a slump in global stock markets, with many experts forecasting a major slowdown in the global economy.He also observed that while some Tanzanian exports may suffer price declines, gold prices are likely to rise as global demand increases, potentially benefiting Tanzanian mining companies.Prof Lipumba warned, however, that without a clear economic roadmap, Tanzania risks missing out on strategic opportunities amid growing global uncertainty.Meanwhile, former Cabinet minister January Makamba weighed in on the issue via his X (formerly Twitter) account, stating that while the US market is sizeable, the broader impact of tariffs on Africa might remain limited.He noted that in the previous year, the US imported approximately $40 billion worth of goods from Africa—an amount equivalent to a single month of imports from Mexico. He added that even at its peak, Agoa contributed just 15 percent of US-Africa trade.Instead, Mr Makamba emphasised the importance of strengthening intra-African trade, which currently stands at 15 percent of the continent’s total trade volume. “In comparison, Europe’s intra-regional trade is 60 percent and Asia’s is 50 percent. If Africa can boost its internal trade to reach Asia’s level by 2040, we could double the continent’s GDP, create millions of jobs and significantly reduce poverty.”Another former Cabinet minister, Prof Anna Tibaijuka, also expressed concern over the growing trade tensions and called for a united African response.She warned that the gradual erosion of Agoa benefits, combined with potential disruptions in regional trade, could harm smaller African economies that lack the leverage to retaliate.  In theory, this appeared as a brilliant strategic move aimed at attracting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). Nonetheless, repeatedly, the government has sabotaged its efforts by implementing policies and procedures that discourage potential investors.
 


 
 NVIDIA’s supercomputing systems, driven by graphics processing units—or GPUs (the key components in artificial intelligence)—will be installed in Cassava Technologies' data centers in South Africa starting as soon as June. The rollout aims to extend these capabilities to additional locations within the company including those in Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, and Nigeria.
 


 
 This clearly shows that when it comes to AI development, South Africa is set to punch above its weight in the years ahead.
 


 
 Speaking in Kigali, Rwanda, at the Inaugural Global AI Summit on Africa, Masiyiwa was blunt about his reasons for side-lining Zimbabwe and other African nations due to their less-than-stellar business environments.
 


 
 Masiyiwa stressed the importance of African leaders fostering an environment conducive to investment.
 


 
 "The importance of our leaders establishing an environment conducive to investments cannot be overstated. As someone like myself who steps up and ventures out to secure billions of dollars to purchase these chips, I am limited to areas that offer favorable conditions for investors," he stated.
 


 
 He emphasized his statement with a serious caution: "We aren’t going to return and inform you that your investment climate isn’t effective. Instead, we simply move on. Therefore, it’s crucial for us to communicate. You must hear our concerns about what we believe is necessary to confidently secure the funds required to proceed.”
 


 
 The Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Minister, Tatenda Mavetera, recognized the challenging task of fostering an attractive environment for businesses to thrive, especially within the ICT industry, which is crucial for drawing investments.
 


 
 "Our ministry is focusing on several key areas: simplifying rules to accelerate technology infrastructure initiatives, encouraging research and development collaborations along with investments from the private sector, and developing robust digital environments supported by stable energy supplies, consistent connectivity, and a skilled workforce pipeline," Mavetera shared on X on Saturday.
 


 
 She added: "More investor friendly policies in the ICT sector are essential and urgent. Let's deepen this dialogue.
 


 
 "We are currently developing various policies such as those for ICT startups and venture capital, as well as fintech and cryptocurrency regulations. Additionally, we aim to introduce tax incentives within the ICT sector with the goal of establishing Zimbabwe as the upcoming technology center," Mavetera added in his writing.

 Air travel to Morocco is growing, with new data from OAG, a global travel analytics company, showing that Western Europe now dominates international flight capacity to the country.
 


 
 Around 6.4 million seats have been scheduled for the winter 2024 season, covering October 2024 to March 2025. This is a 19% increase compared to winter 2023 — an additional one million seats.
 


 
 North America’s flight capacity to Morocco also rose by 19 percent, while routes from Central and Eastern Europe recorded a larger 45 percent year-on-year increase.
 


 
 According to aviation expert Deirdre Fulton, who reviewed these figures, this growth is part of a broader trend in Morocco’s tourism sector.
 


 
 In 2024, the nation welcomed 17.4 million international travelers, ranking it as the top tourist destination in Africa for that year.
 


 
 Fulton associated this expansion with better aerial connections, promotional activities, and the increased variety of locations accessible throughout Morocco.
 


 
 France constitutes the biggest separate marketplace, where airlines have planned to allocate 2.3 million seats for the 2024 winter season.
 


 
 Following closely behind is Spain with more than 1.1 million seats available.  This winter, Ryanair has added over 325,000 additional seats, marking a 67% rise as opposed to easyJet’s expansion.
 


 
 The company has introduced 24 additional international routes originating from Western Europe and currently manages 11 domestic routes across Morocco, four of which have no competitors.
 


 
 Although Marrakesh and Casablanca remain the top choices for travelers, other urban centers are experiencing significant rises in popularity. Cities such as Agadir, Tangier, and Rabat have seen more than a 30 percent increase in seat availability this season during the colder months.
 


 
 Ryanair holds the largest share of European capacity in these cities, including 48% in Tangier, 38% in Rabat, and 36% in both Marrakesh and Agadir. In contrast, easyJet is more active in Agadir, Marrakesh, and Rabat, while Air Arabia Maroc serves about 32 percent of seats to Tangier.

 The bone pieces discovered in an old Spanish cave are from the most ancient human face found so far in Western Europe, according to researchers.


 The fossilized remnants consist of the left cheekbone and upper jaw of an adult from an extinct human species that inhabited and perished on the Iberian Peninsula roughly between 1.1 million and 1.4 million years ago.


 This finding indicates that at least two types of early humans inhabited the area during the early Pleistocene epoch, when the cave was located amidst lush woodlands teeming with fauna and crisscrossed by various waterways.


 "This study brings forth a fresh character into the narrative of human evolution in Europe," stated Dr. Rosa Huguet from the University of Rovira i Virgili located in southern Catalonia, who assisted in discovering the fossils within the Sima del Elefante (Elephant Pit) cave close to Atapuerca in Burgos.

 The Spanish team indicates that the most recent findings are more archaic compared to Homo antecessor but bear similarities to Homo erectus. Due to the ambiguity surrounding the fossil’s classification, they have labeled the species as Homo affinis erectus, highlighting its strong connection to this earlier form of humanity.

 The Latin name is not the only one used for the remains, however. Informally, the researchers nicknamed the fossil “Pink” after Pink Floyd, whose album The Dark Side of the Moon translates to “La cara oculta de la luna”, where “cara oculta” means “hidden face”.


 Dr María Martinón-Torres, who leads the National Centre for Research on Human Evolution in Burgos, noted that one of Pink’s distinct features was her flatter nasal structure compared to Homo antecessor. Unlike this earlier species, Pink exhibited a more contemporary facial appearance along with pronounced nasal bones similar to those found in Homo sapiens.


 Chris Stringer, who leads research on human evolution at the Natural History Museum in London, stated that the fossil was "an extremely significant discovery." In 2023, Stringer along with several others made this identification.

 This marks another stride toward comprehending the early inhabitants of Europe," stated Dr José María Bermúdez de Castro, who co-directs the Atapuerca Project. "It appears that these initial humans bore similarities to those often categorized under Homo erectus. Nonetheless, the findings from the Sima del Elefante location exhibit a distinct set of characteristics. To form a firmer conclusion regarding their specific classification, additional fossils must be discovered at other contemporaneous sites.

 Les citoyens africains veulent que leurs dirigeants représentent leurs intérêts comme il faut, maintenant il y a un grand écart entre ce que les populations veulent et ce que les dirigeants sont entrain de mettre en œuvre, les accords qu’ils signent, les partenariats qu’ils négocient. Chez Africtivistes en tant que réseau panafricain, nous encourageons les quelques gouvernants ou secteurs privés à négocier pour l’intérêt général.


 
 Le continent est très convoité pour ses ressources, et il a été et est toujours un terrain d’affrontements entre les blocs. Diriez-vous que les gouvernements africains ont compris qu’il pouvait se servir de ces luttes pour en sortir bénéficiaires ?
 


 Dès lors que cela favorise les intérêts du pays et qu’il s’agit de partenariats bénéfiques pour toutes les parties concernées, je ne vois aucune objection là-dessus.


 Si cela se fait uniquement pour les intérêts privés de l'élite, cela ne peut pas perdurer car il s'agit d'accords où les ressources naturelles du peuple sont mises en jeu. Cela concerne non seulement la population actuelle mais également toutes celles futures.


 En ce qui concerne le Sénégal, lorsque le nouveau gouvernement est entré en fonction, il a exprimé son intention d'examiner les accords qui ne profitaient pas au bien commun de la populace. Actuellement, des pourparlers se déroulent afin qu'ils puissent évaluer les décisions prises précédemment par l'administration antérieure, comprendre leur mise en œuvre et vérifier s'il était question du bénéfice global des Sénégalais lors de ces choix.


 
 L'Afrique attire de nombreux acteurs internationaux, avec la Russie et la Chine étant parmi les premiers à avoir commencé cette expansion, qui s'est révélée être la plus notable. Quelles stratégies ces deux nations ont-elles utilisées?

 2. Mapungubwe: a special part of history

 in Limpopo can discover an ancient African Kingdom, Southern Africa’s first, that was established at Mapungubwe Hill between 1200 and 1290 AD. This is where archaeologists excavated the famous golden rhino and other evidence of a wealthy African kingdom. Almost-untouched remains of the palace sites survived up to the present day.

 3. Bushman’s Kloof
</h2>

 Bushman’s Kloof is a private reserve in the Cederberg Mountains with over 130 San rock art sites that are well-preserved. Some of the sites date back over 10 000 years and symbolise the San people’s cultural and spiritual practices.

 4. History unfolds at Border Cave
</h2>

 Border Cave is a deep gash in a cliff face, high in the Lebombo Mountains in KwaZulu-Natal. It has yielded significant archaeological finds. People have discovered tools, preserved plant materials, and bones that date back over 200 000 years in Border Cave.


 A few years ago, Lyn Wadley, an archaeologist at the University of the Witwatersrand, discovered plant remains that point to evidence that the cave’s occupants used grass bedding. She was excavating Border Cave with her team when she discovered what appeared to be
 preserved bedding
 . The quantities of grass suggest people brought it into the cave intentionally, Wadley said. The sediment showed repeating layers of plant and ash suggesting that people used the material to create a clean and comfortable floor surface. Researchers speculate that the cave’s occupants laid their bedding on ash to repel insects.
