Yet, after spending many years traversing these places, I've uncovered numerous distinctions. </p> <p> From the era of the Minoans through the time of the Romans, and continuing with the Venetians as well as the Ottomans, various conquerors have influenced every island's traditions, customs, attire, melodies, and cuisine. Serving as a key center for some of early western civilization’s most significant sea trading pathways, the Cyclades are scattered with numerous historical sites, whereas the Dodecanese – controlled by Italy from 1912 to 1943 – exhibit a significant Italian impact. This influence can be seen not just through the local dialect, rich with many loanwords, but also within the culinary scene, featuring pizza as expected, along with about six distinct pasta dishes that cannot be found anywhere else. </p> <p> Crete, birthplace of the mysterious Minoan civilisation , and the Greeks on the island refer to them as the megalo nisi (The Big Island) is a world unto itself – set out towards any village. kafenion (Greek café) and you're sure to overhear conversations fueled by raki. epanastasi (revolution), mirroring the islanders' frequently expressed (though rarely implemented) wish for autonomy. </p> <p> Which destinations should top your travel wish list?
