 "Despite our varied religious beliefs or cultural origins, once someone becomes part of the family, these distinctions should not create divisions among us," stated Penny Sopiah Jimi, who identifies as a Christian. Her daughter, Aaliyah Abdullah, wedded a Muslim over ten years ago.

 "I am immensely grateful because not only did my parents and brothers sisters embrace me completely, but they also enthusiastically joined us in celebrating Hari Raya and even Hari Raya Haji with my family," stated Aaliyah, aged 39, who has three kids.
 
 
 She mentioned that their family customs involve sorting festive cookies as a group, giving out duit raya, and coming together to break the fast during Ramadan — activities they've been doing regularly for almost ten years now.
 
 
 My brothers and sisters would go out of their way to purchase special gifts for my mother-in-law or send seasonal treats to their cousins, even though they reside in separate districts.
 
 
 "These little acts strengthen our connections and fill me with immense gratitude," she stated.

 , or the "Goddess of the Sea" have been flown from Xiamen to Taiwan after the airline issued a special boarding pass under the name "Lin Mo," to denote a cultural exchange between the two places.


 On March 29, the statues embarked on Xiamen Airlines flight MF881 departing from Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport located in southeast China’s Fujian province, heading towards Taiwan.


 Videos showing crew members meticulously transporting the statues inside the cabin gained widespread attention on the internet shortly after being shared.

 One of the statues showcased the primary deity referred to as "Black-faced Mazu," who gained this title because her face turned entirely dark whenever she utilized her abilities to fend off invaders and safeguard her village.


 The alternative statue had a gentle pink-hued face, representing a nurturing and affectionate maternal presence.

 The airline created a distinctive boarding pass for the statues labeled as "Lin Mo" and supplied specially designed extended safety belts complete with additional red straps to guarantee their stability throughout the journey.


 Owing to their substantial dimensions, the airline proactively collaborated with the airport, customs and immigration officials, as well as security teams, to arrange for exceptional measures beforehand.


 The measures comprised specialized registration desks, a separate lounge area, and a quicker security clearance line.

 It was initially named "Lin Mo" and came into existence in 960 on Meizhou Island, located in the Fujian province of eastern China.

 As reported by the Global Times, the two statues seized during this trip were bigger compared to those from previous visits and came with an increased number of ritual objects.


 Internet commentators voiced their hopes, wishing that the statues might bolster the relationship between the mainland and the island.

 A century of sand sculpting tradition in Weymouth will be commemorated with the opening of an attraction today as it kicks off its seasonal run.


 For many years, Weymouth has served as a remarkable backdrop for sand sculpture enthusiasts who turn the beach sands into stunning masterpieces.


 Fred Darrington embarked on his career as a sand sculptor in the 1920s and dedicated seven decades to refining his artistry. His realistic creations spanned an array of subjects including pyramids, sphinxes, scenes like The Last Supper, and fantastical figures such as the Loch Ness Monster.


 During this period, another renowned sculptor named Jack Hayward made his indelible impression upon Weymouth’s beaches. Working from the 1930s through the 1970s, Jack gained recognition for his grandiose sand creations, often emulating historic religious structures.


 Mark Anderson, Fred Darrington's grandson, carried forward the family legacy, inheriting both his zeal and aptitude.


 In 2011, Mark established the Sandworld attraction at Lodmoor Country Park together with his colleague and fellow sand sculptor David Hicks.


 Maintaining the town’s long-standing heritage in sculpture, the family-friendly destination—which welcomes visitors starting today for the summer season—displays exclusive works by top-tier sand artists globally.  The upcoming sand sculpture event at Sandworld this year offers a remarkable collection showcasing ancient beasts from 83 million years past, a vibrantly coloured Egyptian prince, iconic figures from kids' favourites, along with various innovative creations. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in interactive sessions and engaging events suitable for all ages.


 Enhancing the thrill further, renowned Indian sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik from Odisha will present an exclusive creation at this year’s event. Over three decades, Sudarsan has employed his talent for shaping sand as a medium to advocate cultural heritage and societal issues, garnering global recognition. The prime minister, Narendra Modi, bestowed upon him one of India’s top civil honours, and he remains a source of inspiration for emerging artists worldwide.


 In acknowledgment of his trip, Sudarsan is set to be honored with the Fred Darrington Award for Excellence in Art and Culture during a ceremony later today.

 George Town, April 6 – In the past, the Chingay Parade in Penang would attract massive crowds with throngs of spectators lining the streets, eagerly stretching their necks to witness the incredible stunts performed by the artists who effortlessly balanced and passed 10-metre-long poles adorned with flags between them.


 The Penang Chingay Parade, which wound its way through the streets of George Town, beginning at Padang Brown in Datuk Keramat and concluding at the Esplanade, frequently attracted both residents and tourists due to more than just its acrobatic displays featuring large flags. The parade also showcased stilt walkers, unicycle riders, lion dances, and dragon dances.

 In recent times, however, enthusiasm for the parade has diminished, with mainly tourists and barely any locals turning up as viewers. This downturn has led to a reduction in sponsorships for the Chingay participants as well.


 Kayden Ang, who chairs Persatuan Chingay Malaysia Utara, mentioned that previously, the funding for the event came from private firms, temples, and organizations. Their logos and names were incorporated into large banners through embroidery.


 He mentioned, “Currently, attracting sponsors has become difficult as not many individuals show interest in Chingay.”


 The expenses involved in constructing the large banners, which consist of lengthy bamboo stalks and chiffon fabric, might amount to several hundred ringgits solely for the poles. This is because they needed to obtain perfectly straight bamboo stalks with precise measurements and dimensions.


 “He mentioned that even the fabric comes with a hefty price tag since we use chiffon for its lightness, which might run into a few thousand dollars.”

 He mentioned that in recent times, the association’s expenditures have been covered by both its members and several private enterprises.


 "We undertake these efforts due to our enthusiasm for the game," he stated.


 Apart from the expenses involved, he mentioned that most of the current participants are blue-collar employees who can’t afford to miss work for training sessions. Although there are younger members joining, few stay actively engaged for extended periods.


 The society boasts around 300 members; however, merely 80 of them actively participate and contribute their skills.


 From that group, merely around 40 can execute acrobatic maneuvers with the large banners, and very few among them are youngsters.


 "They mentioned that many of the acrobatic performers are over 40 years old, with hardly anyone under 30," he stated.


 He mentioned that the organization includes young participants as early as eight or nine years old; however, these children will initially master handling small banners. Eventually, though, they tend to cease their involvement altogether.


 "This is precisely why we believe that this collaborative nomination to UNESCO for Chingay holds significant importance," he stated, pointing towards the effort aimed at getting Chingay listed in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.


 He mentioned it might generate greater local engagement and potentially encourage more kids to take an interest in the sport.

 As per Chingay coach Lee Kok Keong, mastering the acrobatic aspect of the sport requires genuine interest and enthusiasm from individuals.


 He mentioned that training is rigorous and frequently leads to injuries, including cracked teeth, as they learn to grasp the bamboo poles using only their mouths.


 He mentioned that one of the most effective methods to generate awareness and enthusiasm is by incorporating the sport into school curriculums.


 "It’s an excellent activity for enhancing balance, strength, and agility," Lee mentioned.


 In the meantime, Andrew Lai, the secretary of the Penang Chingay Association, voiced similar concerns as Ang, noting that fewer youngsters are showing interest in learning about Chingay.


 He mentioned that parents are more overprotective towards their kids due to safety worries, and apart from that, they fail to recognize the advantages of having them learn Chingay.


 Lai mentioned that wushu and lion dance are more popular compared to Chingay due to their status as recognized sports with many competitions available.

 “Therefore, we anticipate that this Unesco bid will elevate Chingay as a cultural event and generate greater enthusiasm for the activity,” he stated.


 He mentioned that one of the suggestions put forward for the nomination was to establish standardized regulations for Chingay competitions since presently, there are no specific guidelines or scoring systems in place.


 "This will establish a benchmark for Chingay, and as a result, more events can be organized. With these events, additional individuals will likely want to participate and learn about it," he stated.


 Ang further mentioned that it’s essential to have standardized competition regulations for Chingay to avoid biased scoring and, concurrently, develop an internationally competitive event where other nations can join in.


 "Once we secure the Unesco listing, I am confident it will lead to greater economic advantages for Penang and also highlight Chingay," Lai stated.


 Associations from Penang and Johor Bahru are collaborating with Singapore on a shared Unesco application for Chingay.


 Lai mentioned that they have participated in workshops and meetings alongside representatives from Johor Baru and Singapore to deliberate on the collective nomination. This included choosing which videos and photographs should be submitted to UNESCO for consideration.


 Upon being reached for comment, George Town World Heritage Incorporated General Manager Ang Ming Chee stated that although the Chingay parades in Penang, Johor Bahru, and Singapore each possess distinct features, they all share a single defining characteristic: these processions serve as a celebration of the community.

 On September 11, 2021, when fire consumed the historic residence of the de Peralta clan in Dingras, Ilocos Norte, irreplaceable records, photographs, and writings detailing the existence of Enriqueta “Quitang” Guerrero de Peralta were lost. However, this tragedy ignited a fresh drive among her heirs and admirers to commemorate her heritage.


 One of her accomplishments was successfully pushing for the official recognition of Mother’s Day nationally in 1921. She also advocated for the voting rights of Filipino women and played a key role in founding puericulture centers in Ilocos Norte to cater to the health needs of mothers and children. Throughout all this work, she composed a collection of poems in Ilocano which granted her the distinction as the Poetess of Ilocandia.


 The story of her life is highlighted in the book "Enriqueta de Peralta: A Woman Ahead of Her Time," authored by her grandniece Minda de Peralta Acacio Garcia. This publication delves into both her biography and poetry, providing an insightful look at her impact between 1882 and 1940.


 The book launch events occurred in Taguig, New York City, and Hawaii, supported by the International Professional Association of Dinglas (IPAD). The latest event was conducted in Dinglas on March 22 coinciding with the town fiesta, where local officials along with members from the Zonta Club Ilocos Norte participated.


 The significance was heightened as well due to the presence of her full-sized memorial in Dingras. Constructed by the National Historical Commission in 1989 at the site in front of their house on Peralta Street, Barangay Albano, it still remains unscathed by the fire.

To coincide with the unveiling, it underwent restoration and was painted in shades of gold and white to emphasize her accomplishments, such as her efforts towards establishing Mother’s Day and securing voting rights for women.


 The event included a wreath-laying ceremony conducted by local authorities and descendants of de Peralta. Additionally, Patricia de Peralta Quiason, who is the granddaughter of Enriqueta’s sibling Abraham, delivered a talk providing more details about her existence and the endeavors to uphold her legacy.


 Someone might wonder about the significance of emphasizing her contributions and the roots of Mother's Day celebrations in the Philippines as the global community looks forward to observing it every May. The book addresses this by highlighting the central importance of family in Filipino culture, noting that "a strong bond rooted in affection, comprehension, and regard connects all members within a family unit, particularly honoring mothers who oversee domestic life and nurture their families."


 The book features pictures of the 1921 Circular No. 33 signed by American Governor Charles Yeater, along with subsequent declarations issued by various Philippine presidents. Despite changes in the commemoration date throughout history, this custom continues to be robust, particularly amongst older individuals who recall paying tribute to their moms using flower brooches.


 Her cause included advocating for women’s voting rights. Serving as the head of the Women's Club of Ilocos Norte, Enriqueta worked across Ilocos and surrounding areas to gather backing for allowing women to cast their votes. She was particularly vital due to her organizing abilities at a juncture where getting legal endorsement took longer than expected.


 At the event’s unveiling, Ilocos Norte Vice Governor Cecilia Araneta-Marcos addressed the audience, stating that she sees herself as a "recipient of her initiatives." She explained, “Being a woman allows me to pursue political ambitions like running for office… Her dedication as a public official inspires me.” Adding further, she mentioned that as she aims to become the next governor in the upcoming May elections, she feels more prepared to take on this responsibility due to the commendable efforts of Enrigueta.


 During the event, Ilocos Norte Vice Governor Cecilia Araneta-Marcos highlighted how Enriqueta’s contributions facilitated greater opportunities for women in leadership positions. Meanwhile, in New York, Consul General Senen Mangalilla pondered over the insights drawn from her life — which included themes of purpose, dedication to public service, and the merging of artistic expression with activism.


 Enriqueta, who was the fifth among eight siblings born to nationalistic parents named Isidoro de Peralta and Monica Guerrero, grew up in an environment filled with patriotism and remained single throughout her life. Her niece, Filipinas de Peralta Acacio Guerrero, carried forward her public service endeavors and made sure that Enriqueta received acknowledgment from the National Historical Commission.


 In 1918, Enriqueta began her career as the secretary for a women’s club and swiftly ascended to become its president before taking up the role of auditor at the Rural Credit Association. Under her guidance, she significantly enhanced local economies and expanded access to maternity care services. She supervised the establishment of multiple puericulture centers across Northern Luzon. Additionally, she engaged her nephew, Dr. Rizal Guerrero de Peralta—who played his part in improving regional healthcare with the introduction of the area's inaugural X-ray facility and providing pro bono medical assistance—in various public health initiatives within their communities.


 In her 1936 report prior to retiring after serving for 13 years as the president of the Ilocos Norte women's club, she attributed the achievements of their initiatives—such as offering maternal and pediatric healthcare along with various health services—to the commitment of its members. She succumbed to breast cancer in 1940.


 An exclusive image shows Enriqueta driving a tractor while dressed in a baro't saya, which was previously utilized for an advertising campaign and is now displayed on the book’s front cover.


 Vice Mayor Erdio Valenzuela characterized her as an intellectual with empathy, noting that her words were instrumental in uplifting others and safeguarding Ilocano culture.


 The poems written by Enriqueta include translations of José Rizal’s work into Ilocano, encompassing themes of patriotism and femininity. Her literary pieces have appeared in various collections of Ilocano verse, where experts acknowledge her skillful use of lyricism.


 During the Dingras event, senior IPAD members performed her poem titled "Ti Wagaywaytayo." The concluding lines expressed a deep yearning towards the flag—a reflection of Enriqueta’s persistent desire for liberty and tranquility.

 恐らく『トラ柄の猫』に遭遇したことのない人はいないはず。猫に詳しくない人でも一度はどこかで見かけたことがあり、何となく＂猫といえばこの柄＂というイメージがあるでしょう。


 いわば＂定番模様＂ともいうべきトラ柄ですが、なぜ人々の中に定着するほど数が多いのでしょうか。また、毛色による性格の違いはあるのでしょうか。


 ここでは、知っているようで知らない『トラ柄』の豆知識を3つ紹介いたします。

 1.『キジトラ』はイエネコのルーツ
</h2>

 私達が日頃接している猫は＂イエネコ＂と呼ばれる種。そして、その祖先はリビアヤマネコです。


 実は、リビアヤマネコから派生した最初の猫が『キジトラ』だといわれています。つまり、イエネコのルーツというわけです。三毛猫はもちろんのこと、白黒猫やサビ猫も、その先祖は皆キジトラになります。


 なぜキジトラが根強く子孫を残し続けることができたかというと、砂漠においてカモフラージュができたからです。


 いつの時代も環境に適応し、生き延び続けたキジトラは、現代においても頻繁に出会うことができる猫として人々に愛されてします。

 2.トラ柄は3パターンある
</h2>

 イエネコの元祖はキジトラですが、トラ柄の猫は全部で3パターンです。ここからは、『○○トラ』と呼ばれる猫達の特徴を紹介していきます。

 キジトラ
</h2>

 まずはお馴染みのキジトラから。キジトラは茶色の被毛をベースとし、そこに黒い縞模様が入っています。柄の入り方がキジ（雌鳥）に類似していることからこの名が付けられました。


 基本的にキジトラは野生の本能が強く、家族以外の人物には警戒心が強い傾向にあります。ただし一度心を許せば甘えん坊と化すため、虜になるでしょう。

 茶トラ
</h2>

 被毛のベースはオレンジで、更に濃いオレンジ系の縞模様が入っています。


 実はこの柄を作り出す『O（オレンジ）遺伝子』は、オス猫が誕生しやすいという特徴を持っています。


 『茶トラ猫は大きい』『甘えっ子が多い』という噂は概ね本当で、オス猫ならではの特徴が反映されています。


 更に性格的な部分では、温厚で自身の欲望に忠実な面を持っていることが多い傾向にあります。オス猫は子育てをしない分、少々お子ちゃま的な要素が残りやすいのでしょう。

 サバトラ
</h2>

 サバトラは銀色の被毛を基調とし、そこに黒の縞模様が乗っています。しっぽの先は黒一色で、お腹にも縞模様が入っていることが特徴になります。


 ＂魚のサバ＂に似た模様を持つことからこの名が付けられました。


 サバトラは洋猫と日本猫の交配によって誕生したといわれています。ここ数十年という単位で数が増えましたが、キジトラや茶トラと比べると希少なトラ猫です。


 そんなサバトラは、慎重派と活発派に分かれる傾向にあります。より野性的な要素を受け継いだサバトラは警戒心が強く、人と馴染みのあるサバトラは人懐っこい性格になることが多いようです。

 白い被毛が入ると『○○白』と呼ばれる
</h2>

 キジトラ・茶トラ・サバトラの被毛をベースに白い部分が加わると、キジ白・茶白・サバ白という呼称になります。


 キジトラは白の割合が多いほどおっとりした性格になる傾向があり、茶白は基本的には茶トラの性格に類似している場合が多いそう。


 サバ白も茶白と同様に、サバトラの気質がそのまま現れる傾向にあり、警戒心が強いコもいれば人懐っこいコもいるようです。

 3.実は『黒トラ』もいる
</h2>

 先ほど『○○トラ』は3パターンと紹介したばかりですが、実は『黒トラ』というちょっぴりレアな猫もいるのです。他のトラ柄とは何が異なるのでしょうか、

 柄が曖昧になるコもいる
</h2>

 3つのトラ猫は、どの猫達もくっきりとした縞模様が入っています。


 一方黒トラはベースが黒、根元が白や薄い灰色という特徴を持っています。縞模様自体も黒のため、柄の入り方には個体差があります。


 中にはあまり目立たないコがいる他、成猫になるにつれて縞模様が薄くなるパターンもあります。

<h2>
 温厚で和を重んじる性格
</h2>

 黒トラは黒猫の要素に近いため、温厚で協調性を大切にする猫が多いそう。


 また、何かに夢中になると周囲が見えなくなることがあり、うっかりキャットタワーから落下するというドジっ子な一面も持っているようです。
