Additionally, they are contemplating offering noise reduction options via curtains and window treatments.

The expansion of the renowned Swedish furniture company into sleep solutions coincides with its growth strategy in India, where it recently initiated online delivery services in Delhi-NCR and various northern metropolitan areas earlier this month.

In India, we're investigating ways to enhance temperature control and sound insulation," Wuts mentioned, referring to a recently published global IKEA report on consumer sleeping patterns. According to the study, although 71 percent of Indian participants believe their sleep duration is adequate, stress continues to be a significant issue for 30 percent of those surveyed.

He mentioned, "It was notable in the study that from a bedding standpoint, people in India are largely content. The focus should be more on enhancing the overall bedroom environment and improving this aspect for consumers not only in India but also elsewhere."

The comfort levels for beds, bedding, and pillows ranged from 83 to 86 percent, but satisfaction regarding air quality and temperature stood at just 9 percent, as per the research findings.

IKEA currently offers duvets featuring viscose fibers designed for temperature control, as well as various types of air purifiers and air quality monitors. According to the research outcomes, the subsequent stage of IKEA’s product development will concentrate on broadening these products.

IKEA carried out the sleep study across 57 different regions via online market research panels, ensuring around 1,000 participants per country. Although they aimed for nationwide representation, the survey highlighted that in 20 locations—such as India, China, Mexico, and Turkey—the data was skewed towards more educated people because of their higher rates of internet usage.

According to the IKEA sleep score—an index ranging from 0-100 that evaluates sleep quality across five criteria—India's rating was 68, aligning with the United Arab Emirates' score. Mainland China achieved the top IKEA sleep score of 74, whereas Norway, the U.S., the U.K., and Canada registered scores in the upper 50s as per the research findings. Additionally, the report highlighted that Indian respondents experience less disparity between their ideal and real sleep duration; they only fall short by 35 minutes, significantly lower than the worldwide average difference of 80 minutes.

Products related to sleep, including bedroom furniture, beds, mattresses, and home textiles, make up a substantial portion of IKEA's earnings in India.

“A dark-colored bedroom furniture and bed frames equipped with storage solutions are very much in vogue in India because of the necessity for space optimization. When it comes to textiles, printed flat sheets have surpassed solid colors as well as fitted sheets in terms of preference. People favor firm pocket-spring mattresses rather than softer foam alternatives. Additionally, in lighting choices, gentler hues along with room-darkening curtains are becoming increasingly trendy,” stated a representative from IKEA India.

The prominent Swedish retailer will conduct product research and development utilizing insights obtained from the sleep study for global markets.

IKEA also carries out ethnographic research through home visits. "We spend entire days with families, share meals with them, and closely observe their activities throughout the day," explained Wuts. He added, "While a brief tour only provides a glimpse into daily life, spending an entire day together offers deeper insights into the household routines across various countries."

For the latest news from across India , Political updates , Explainers , Sports News , Opinion , Entertainment Updates and more Top News , visit Indian Express .
