The federal government has extended electronic monitoring throughout the nation's boundaries, where technology currently encompasses 60 percent of Nigeria’s 4,047-kilometer borderline area.

 The disclosure was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a tweet posted on his X account and accessed by our reporter on Sunday.


 The minister restated the administration's dedication to boosting national security and safeguarding the nation's boundaries via technological advancements and enhanced regulatory supervision.


 He stated, "Nigeria has increased electronic monitoring at the borders, which currently covers 60% of Nigeria’s 4,047 km frontier area after implementing advanced technology systems. More than 30 additional operational vehicles have been incorporated into the fleet responsible for overseeing and patrolling our boundaries, thereby enhancing national sovereignty."


 The minister additionally mentioned that the federal government had identified 6,000 people from foreign nations who improperly acquired Nigeria’s National Identification Numbers prior to the Bola Tinubu administration taking office.


 He pointed out that this finding is an integral part of the continuous initiatives aimed at optimizing the data management system for the National Identity Management Commission.


 Tunji-Ojo did not indicate whether any of the mentioned persons have been detained or if there are ongoing legal actions against them.


 He said, "The National Identity Management Commission now has more than 120 million registrations in the national digital database. Additionally, as part of efforts to improve the accuracy of the NIMC’s records, approximately 6,000 people from abroad have been identified as having fraudulently acquired National Identity Numbers prior to this current government."


 The minister further mentioned that NIMC recently resolved more than two million pending requests for NIN modifications within several weeks towards the end of last year, emphasizing this as an indication of the government’s enhanced commitment to improving identity management services.


 He stated, "Within just a few weeks last year, NIMC processed and resolved more than two million pending applications for National Identification Number modifications. This initiative supports their continuous endeavors to improve identity management services across the nation."
