FG Reaches 60% Completion on Border E-Surveillance System

The federal government has extended electronic monitoring throughout the nation's boundaries, where technology currently encompasses 60 percent of Nigeria’s 4,047-kilometer borderline area.


 Additionally, more than 30 operational vehicles have been supplied for monitoring and patrolling the country's borders.


 The disclosure was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a tweet posted on his X account and accessed by our reporter on Sunday.


 The minister restated the administration's dedication to boosting national security and safeguarding the nation's boundaries via technological advancements and enhanced regulatory supervision.


 He stated, "Nigeria has increased electronic monitoring at the borders, which currently covers 60% of Nigeria’s 4,047 km frontier area after implementing advanced technology systems. More than 30 additional operational vehicles have been incorporated into the fleet responsible for overseeing and patrolling our boundaries, thereby enhancing national sovereignty."


 The minister additionally mentioned that the federal government had identified 6,000 people from foreign nations who improperly acquired Nigeria’s National Identification Numbers prior to the Bola Tinubu administration taking office.


 He pointed out that this finding is an integral part of the continuous initiatives aimed at optimizing the data management system for the National Identity Management Commission.


 Tunji-Ojo did not indicate whether any of the mentioned persons have been detained or if there are ongoing legal actions against them.


 He said, "The National Identity Management Commission now has more than 120 million registrations in the national digital database. Additionally, as part of efforts to improve the accuracy of the NIMC’s records, approximately 6,000 people from abroad have been identified as having fraudulently acquired National Identity Numbers prior to this current government."


 The minister further mentioned that NIMC recently resolved more than two million pending requests for NIN modifications within several weeks towards the end of last year, emphasizing this as an indication of the government’s enhanced commitment to improving identity management services.


 He stated, "Within just a few weeks last year, NIMC processed and resolved more than two million pending applications for National Identification Number modifications. This initiative supports their continuous endeavors to improve identity management services across the nation."

 NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte cautioned on Wednesday that the organization’s reaction to an assault on Poland or other member states by Russia would be ‘catastrophic.’


 During his one-day trip to Warsaw, Rutte issued this warning while calling for solidarity among European countries to enhance their military capabilities and defense sectors, echoing the U.S.'s push for Europe to shoulder more responsibility for its own security going forward.

 Should someone mistakenly believe that they could assault Poland without repercussions or launch an attack against another ally, our alliance will react with strong force.


 "Our reaction will be overwhelming," Rutte stated, flanking Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk during a press conference.


 This should be evident to Mr. Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin and to everyone considering an assault on us,” Rutte further stated.


 The warning from the NATO leader also comes at a time when confidence within the 32-member alliance has reached an all-time low, following the Trump administration's focus on prioritizing American security interests in Asia and along its own borders.


 Let me make myself perfectly clear: now is not the time for individual action. Neither Europe nor North America should act independently," Rutte stated during his address in Warsaw. "Given the magnitude of global security challenges, none of us can confront them alone.


 He commended Poland for being a dependable partner that significantly contributes to the collective finances.


 In turn, the Polish prime minister expressed gratitude to the NATO leader for supporting Operation Shield East, an initiative set forth from 2024 through 2028 aimed at bolstering Poland’s defenses against possible assaults and hybrid warfare threats.


 The initiative was launched within the Polish Ministry of National Defence due to Russian hostilities towards Ukraine and the escalating menace posed by Russia.


 "We assume complete responsibility for securing Poland's eastern frontier, not just for ourselves but also for our allies within Europe and NATO. It is crucial for me to receive a positive evaluation of this initiative from the Secretary General of NATO," Tusk stated.


 "The geographical features we possess are unique, as are our historical circumstances; regarding defense spending, we demonstrate a commitment unmatched by any other NATO nation at present," the leader of Poland’s administration further stated.


 Currently, Warsaw allocates over four percent of its GDP to defense, with projections for 2025 aiming to increase this figure to as much as five percent.

 US President Donald Trump revoked access to classified information for officials in the Biden administration. The document states that this decision was made due to threats to national interests, according to the White House press office.


 Trump made the decision to revoke access to classified information for 15 high-ranking officials, including former Secretary of State Antony Blinken, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, Vice President Kamala Harris, former politicians, and family members of Joe Biden.


 In the relevant memorandum, Trump stated that access to classified data for these individuals no longer aligns with US national interests.


 The list includes former Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Jacob Sullivan, Lisa Monaco, Mark Zaid, Norman Eisen, Letitia James, Alvin Bragg, Andrew Weissmann, Hillary Clinton, Elizabeth Cheney, Kamala Harris, Adam Kinzinger, Fiona Hill, Alexander Vindman, Joseph R. Biden Jr., and any other member of Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s family.


 This decision concerns not only those with access to intelligence briefings or the president’s daily briefing but also those who had access to classified information through their work in the government or private sector.


 In accordance with the decision, the president has instructed all heads of US executive departments and agencies to take necessary steps to revoke security clearances for the listed individuals and to suspend their access to government facilities without escort.


 If access to classified information was granted through private organizations, government agencies are to notify these organizations of the clearance revocation.


 It’s worth recalling that US President Donald Trump revoked access to classified data for his predecessor, Joe Biden. Referring to a report, he noted that the former president has memory issues, making him untrustworthy with confidential information.


 Additionally, according to the current president, Biden "set a precedent" in 2021 when he ordered the Intelligence Community to restrict Trump’s access to national security information.

 MANILA, Philippines — US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth plans to visit the Philippines next week with aims to promote security goals among the nation’s leadership.


 He plans to have meetings with both Philippine and U.S. military personnel and troops as well.


 As stated by the US Embassy in Manila.


 On Saturday, the embassy issued a statement saying that Hegseth’s visit aims at establishing "an unprecedented level of collaboration with allied nations to boost regional security."


 "He will visit the Philippines to enhance security goals alongside Philippine leaders and will also have meetings with both US and Philippine military personnel," it stated.

 As stated separately, the US Department of Defense mentioned that Hegseth’s journey encompassed visits to Hawaii, Guam, and Japan.

 The statement also noted that Hegseth’s initial trip to Hawaii involved meetings with "civilians and military officials from the US Indo-Pacific Command."


 "Subsequently, Sec. Hegseth will head to Guam with plans to inspect the military installations and attend capability presentations. Following this visit, he is scheduled to go to the Philippines," the announcement stated.


 "In Japan, Secretary Hegseth will take part in a ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima and will subsequently hold meetings with Japanese officials and U.S. military personnel," it stated.
