Rashida Jones on Her 'Office' Exit: "I Was Unpopular"

 Rashida Jones’ time on

 It was brief, and the actress looks back at what led to her character’s quick departure.
 
 
 In the most recent episode of Amy Poehler’s podcast
 Good Hang
 , Jones recounted her short time on the NBC sitcom and speculated on why she believes she was eventually let go.
 
 
 "I completed one year on
 The Office
 And they allowed me to leave, which was logical," Jones stated. "It made sense."
 
 
 Jones portrayed Karen Filippelli, a character first introduced during Season 3. She worked at Dunder Mifflin’s Stamford branch and emerged as both a romantic interest for John Krasinski’s Jim and a competitor to Jenna Fischer’s Pam.
 
 
 Poehler commented on the challenging circumstances Jones faced, stating, "Your role was so difficult because everyone was eager for more of Jim and Pam, but then along comes this incredibly likeable and cool person... and suddenly everyone thought, 'Wait, what?'"
 
 
 Jones stated, "That wasn't how it felt at all. The people didn't enjoy my presence. Essentially, the fans weren't supportive."
 
 
 When reflecting on the creation of the character, Jones mentions that she realizes Karen Filippelli was brought in to "generate conflict" within Jim and Pam’s relationship.
 
 
 "So I was the third person in the trio. That's okay. I'm comfortable with it," she remarked.
 
 
 Jones went on to revisit her Karen character in two Season 4 episodes and one Episode from Season 5. Her final appearance was in an episode during Season 7.
 
 
 After her short time on
 The Office
 , Jones continued to co-star alongside Poehler in
 Parks and Recreation

Ricky Gervais clears up long-running rumour about The Office US

 Ricky Gervais
 has finally addressed rumours that he auditioned to replace
 Steve Carrell
 in the US version of his hit sitcom,
 The Office.


 Speaking to
 The Independent
 for the 20th anniversary of the much-loved series, Gervais, who co-created
 the original British version
 with
 Stephen Merchant
 , spoke about transforming the Slough-based workplace mockumentary into a hit American comedy.

 The Office

 Cast Steve Carell as Michael Scott, the regional manager at Dunder Mifflin Paper Company and the show's counterpart to Gervais’s character, David Brent.


 The show was immensely successful throughout its nine-season run; nonetheless, Carell left after the seventh season concluded, stating his desire to dedicate more time to his family.


 "When they were looking for the new boss [ultimately portrayed by Will Ferrell], they mentioned it would be great if I applied for the position [while playing Brent]," Gervais explained.

 When asked about discussions regarding his potential replacement for Carell after Carell departed, Gervais stated, "Such talks did occur. I am unsure whether they reached the stage where NBC contacted anyone directly or if these conversations were primarily driven by media speculation and feedback from the show’s audience."


 However, when he failed to appear in the US series, some suggested that he had auditioned and failed to get the part. “That’s fiction,” Gervais clarified.


 Elsewhere in the interview, Gervais shed light on his decision to turn down the role of Michael Scott before Carell was cast.


 “Before we cast, [producer] Ben [Silverman] called me and said ‘Why don’t you play Michael Scott?’ I said, ‘That is mental. It makes no sense at all.’


 “Why would I do it? The reason
 The Office
 resonated was because it was made in England for English people. It’s got to be made by Americans for Americans,” Gervais said.


 Merchant also revealed who else was in the running to play Scott.


 “Bob Odenkirk would’ve been brilliant,” he told
 The Independent
 . “It’s interesting. Initially, he didn’t seem to have the immediate warmth that Carell [had], or certainly not then. Yet, when you’ve seen him in things like
 Better Call Saul
 , it’s all there. It’s hard to know.

 “It would’ve been equally good but sometimes when you’re casting, you can feel when it’s the right person.”


 Carell’s performance ultimately earned him widespread acclaim - including six Emmy Award nominations.


 The Office
 US was such a success that Gervais believes “most Americans don’t know about the English show”.
