Dhaka, April 3 -- A female reporter from the English-language newspaper New Age and her brother faced physical attack when they confronted a group of young people who were reportedly stalking her close to their residence in the Banasree district of the city on Wednesday.
Upon receiving information about the incident, a police unit was dispatched to the location. This was stated by Sub-Inspector Anisur Rahman, who serves as the duty officer at Rampur Police Station, to UNB.
He stated that so far, no arrests have been made.
The journalist Rafia Tamanana, who worked as an editorial assistant at New Age, shared details of the incident in a Facebook post.
"About three to four young individuals came out of the store, approached me, and positioned themselves beside me. Once my sibling stepped in, they attacked him and started hitting him," she stated.
Rafia also said that she was attacked and beaten by the group when she tried to protect her brother.
"The people nearby simply observed the situation as bystanders, and nobody offered assistance. The assailants also summoned more individuals to join them in forming a larger crowd," she mentioned additionally.
Rafia stated that she and her brother left the area to avoid additional danger. She asked, "Isn’t this place supposed to be safe for me?"
Later, the authorities were notified, and Rafia was transported to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. She stated that she intended to submit an official report once she had received medical care.
A law enforcement unit was examining the surveillance videos from the vicinity, whereas another group was assisting the person affected. The authorities stated that measures would be implemented following the submission of a formal complaint.
