(DIwida.Blog & News) -- Michigan State Senator Mallory McMorrow , whose fiery floor speech gained national attention in 2022, announced that she will run for the US Senate seat being vacated by retiring Democrat Gary Peters.
McMorrow, a Democrat from suburban Detroit, said her campaign will break from what she described as her party’s over-reliance on polarizing social debates. Instead, she plans to run a centrist, economically focused campaign aimed at winning back middle-class voters who drifted toward Donald Trump in last year’s election.
“It’s Time for a New American Dream,” will be the campaign’s theme, McMorrow said in an interview. “There are far too many Michiganders who do not fundamentally believe that the American dream is attainable.”

In 2022, McMorrow gained recognition when she strongly refuted a false claim made by a Republican counterpart accusing her of supporting the grooming of minors. During an address that became widely circulated online, she affirmed her self-identity as "a straight, white, Christian, married mother from suburbia" and declared her refusal to allow hatred to prevail.
Her task ahead for the 2026 Senate race will be attracting working-class voters who still have doubts about Democratic leadership due to rising inflation rates that surged in 2021 and 2022 during former President Joe Biden's tenure. Trump’s pro-tariff Anti-immigration measures are viewed by working-class voters as significant tools for safeguarding employment against both imported goods and foreign labor.
McMorrow stated that she plans to highlight her tenure in the Michigan Senate, during which she was part of both the Economic and Community Development Committee and the Appropriations Committee. She helped attract new businesses to the state and established an annual fund worth $50 million aimed at promoting affordable housing.
McMorrow stated she will argue that Trump and Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency are not valid. working For the people, this is a frequent theme echoed by many Democratic legislators.
When individuals hear 'MAGA,' they reminisce about the better times in the past," McMorrow stated. "They are cutting back on Medicare and Medicaid programs. This reduction is being redirected to provide tax cuts for wealthy individuals. What I'm conveying is that these benefits are being taken away from ordinary citizens.
However, she intends to critique the Democratic Party's communication strategy as well, pointing out that the party might push away potential voters by presuming their worries according to their demographic characteristics.
“Democrats need to stop patronizing people,” she said. “Oh, you’re a woman, you must care about abortion. If you’re Hispanic, you must care about immigration. Democrats talk about people without talking to them.”
Nevertheless, she has promoted laws that resonate strongly with progressive constituents. McMorrow helped draft the initial version of a ballot measure that ultimately enshrined legal abortion in Michigan’s state constitution. Additionally, she supported bills aimed at tackling issues related to gun violence.
“Even if you’re in minority, you still have to fight,” McMorrow said.
So far, no other candidates have formally entered the race. Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, a fellow Michigan Democrat, said in February that he would not run.
