The creator and writer of the television series "The White Lotus" have responded to remarks from the show’s composer, who departed due to alleged disputes within the production.
Cristóbal Tapia de Veer told the New York Times last week He was leaving the show due to disagreements with head writer Mike White.
Addressing Howard Stern during an interview with the broadcaster, White dismissed rumors of a conflict but admitted that she and her counterpart did not always see things the same way.
White mentioned that he sensed a lack of respect from De Veer, and commented, "I believe he wasn't keen on going through the procedure of receiving feedback from me."
The third season of The White Lotus has not garnered as much acclaim as its predecessors, yet it has recently started gaining attention on social media platforms.
De Veer, the composer of the score and theme song for the initial three seasons, mentioned he wouldn’t be coming back for season four because of disagreements with White.
I believe we've had our final argument forever," he stated. "Every time I suggested something, he would simply say no.
In response to his remarks, White said to Stern, "Honestly, I am clueless about what transpired, apart from the fact that I've been going through his interviews since he initiated a publicity push regarding his departure from the program."
I doubt he had respect for me. He aims to show everyone that he’s rebellious and somber, whereas I guess I just enjoy watching reality shows.
White went on: "We barely had any real conflicts. He claims we were at odds. As far as I'm concerned, I never actually got into a disagreement with him – perhaps only through some email exchanges."
White went on: "I essentially provided him with feedback. I don't believe he appreciated receiving notes from me or being asked for revisions since he lacked respect for me."
I was aware that he didn't work well with others and preferred to follow his own path. It surprised me that he chose to criticize both me and the show in The New York Times just three days before the final episode.
After speaking with Stern, De Veer informed Diwida News: "Upon discovering that I wouldn’t be returning for season four, Mike reacted in an unprofessional way instead of maintaining his composure, which led me to go public with this information."
He stated, "All of this occurring presently is entirely unwarranted. I did not initiate this conflict; I am merely protecting myself."
De Veer commented further, saying, "Each observation about the composer's part and the music in the Stern show only reinforces my argument that he fails to grasp or completely recognize the significance and impact of the musical score in The White Lotus."
I didn't receive the authority over musical choices, something you'd expect to accompany the success of the soundtrack. This is also why I won’t be coming back.
'Creative difference'
De Veer received three Emmy Awards for his work on The White Lotus, with an award for Outstanding Theme in the first season.
A number of viewers were upset because the third season altered the show's theme, removing its well-known "ooh-loo-loo-loo" vocal hook.
De Veer mentioned that he attempted to convince the producers to put out a complete version of the season three theme with vocals, however, White declined his proposal.
White said to Stern, "Once the third season rolled around, after he had won Emmy awards and his song became hugely popular, he was not interested in going through the process with me anymore. He avoided attending sessions."
He would constantly gaze at me with a disdainful grin, as though he believed I was some sort of chimpanzee... he’s certainly blowing up a minor creative disagreement into something substantial.
In reply, De Veer highlighted his achievements from "well before the White Lotus" period, noting that he had received additional accolades such as a Bafta and a Royal Television Society Award.
In his initial remarks to the New York Times, De Veer stated: "Perhaps I acted unprofessionally, and certainly Mike believes that I was consistently unprofessional towards him since I did not provide him with what he desired."
