A Catholic bishop requested officials to intervene after tensions flared up again between armed guards and local inhabitants of an contested island in Palawan province.
On Friday, tensions flared when approximately 80 armed guards arrived in Mariahangin, which is an island community within Bugsuk village, located in Balabac town.
The event ignited fear amongst the locals, who are concerned about potential eviction from their native land.
Several years back, reports emerged regarding the proposed development of an eco-luxury tourist destination spanning over 5,000 hectares in Bugsuk, which includes Mariahangin Island.
Bishop Socrates Mesiona from Puerto Princesa expressed worry about the armed group's presence and the possible increase in violent activities in the region.
"I urge government agencies to step in promptly to avoid potential violence," Mesiona stated in a release.
“The incident has instilled significant dread amongst the locals,” stated the bishop, who is presently in Manila for a synod consultation concerning the National Capital Region.
In June 2024, armed individuals wearing masks allegedly discharged firearms close to a cluster of locals who were firmly against the proposed resort development.
The bishop stated that the island has been home to the native Cagayanen and Molbog communities for many years.
