President Donald Trump announced his retaliatory tariff strategy Wednesday at a Rose Garden ceremony which the White House dubbed as "Liberation Day."

Surrounded by much of his Cabinet and auto workers from Michigan, along with other attendees, Trump declared that he would impose tariffs on countries at roughly half the rate that his administration estimates these nations levy on goods coming into the United States.

Additionally, there will be a 10 percent base reduction overall.

Trump referred to this as a "mutual reciprocal tariff" strategy, mentioning that he would feel awkward applying the entire extent of tariffs that other nations impose on American products.

First up on the list that Trump referenced during the announcement was China , which he mentioned imposes a 67 percent tariff on the U.S. (according to his chart, the administration’s tariff calculations factor in currency manipulation and trade barriers).

In reply, Trump stated that his government would impose a 34 percent tariff on products from China.

Concerning all the tariffs being implemented, Trump stated, "They impose charges on us, we impose charges on them. We are imposing lower charges, so how could anyone object?"

Second on his list was the European Union, which imposes a 39 percent tariff on U.S. goods based on the chart, hence the U.S. plans to apply a 20 percent tariff on products from the EU.

In the case of Vietnam Trump stated that the country imposes a 90 percent tariff on American products. Consequently, the U.S. plans to charge them a 46 percent tariff in return.

Moreover, Sri Lanka imposes an 88 percent charge on U.S. products; consequently, their items will face a 44 percent tariff.

Trump announced that the lowest amount that will be imposed is 10 percent , that will be implemented across the board to bring revenue into the federal treasury.

Hence, countries such as the United Kingdom, Brazil, Singapore, and Chile will each face a 10 percent tariff, reflecting what they impose on imports from the U.S.

Previously, Trump had declared that all auto imports , along with steel and aluminum imports, are subjected to a 25 percent tariff.

The president requested that Americans should not let themselves be influenced by the unfavorable press coverage surrounding his new tariffs.

"Over the next few days, we can expect objections from globalists, outsourcing advocates, various interest groups, and fake news outlets... However, remember this: Every forecast made by our adversaries regarding trade over the past three decades has turned out to be entirely incorrect," he argued.

"They were wrong about NAFTA "They were mistaken regarding China, and they erred with regard to the Trans-Pacific Partnership,” he stated. “During my initial term, they claimed that imposing tariffs would lead to an economic collapse. However, we ended up building the most robust economy ever seen in human history.”
