Accra, April 08, GNA – The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has set up a seven-member committee to investigate the untimely death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju.
The Nigerian boxer met his untimely death during a boxing bout against Ghanaian boxer John Mbanugu at the Bukom Boxing Arena on March 29, 2025.
Olanrewaju collapsed in the third round of the bout, and despite medical intervention at the venue, it was too late to resuscitate him as he was later pronounced dead at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
Mr Kofi Iddie Adams, the Minister of Sports and Recreation, during the committee’s inauguration, highlighted the gravity of the situation, adding that it requires a thorough investigation.
He emphasized the government’s commitment to revealing the truth and using these insights to strengthen security protocols in the sport.
Mr. Adams praised the media for their professional reporting and encouraged them to keep up the accuracy, considering the worldwide significance of the case.
The panel, led by Major (Retired) Amarkai Amarteifio—who previously served as sports minister—had been allotted 21 days to submit their findings.
The committee also featured Peter Zwennes, a distinguished attorney and former head of the Ghana Boxing Authority; Ekow Asmah, an esteemed journalist with expertise in boxing history; legal professionals Samuel Bartels and Juliana Addo-Yobo; experienced boxing administrator Eddie Pappoe; and medical doctor specializing in sports medicine, Dr. Martin Engmann.
An emissary from the Nigerian High Commission based in Ghana will act as an observer on the panel to guarantee openness and cooperation between both nations.
The committee aimed to determine precisely how Olanrewaju died, check if proper medical and safety measures consistent with global norms were adhered to, and review the thoroughness of Nigerian boxing officials in sanctioning the boxer for the international match.
The committee's remit goes further than just examining the tragic incident involving Olanrewaju’s demise; it also encompasses an evaluation of the regulatory and medical protocols within Ghana's boxing sector as well as its global engagements.
It would likewise examine the conduct of the officials involved, suggest penalties if needed, and provide recommendations for improving technical and medical protocols to enhance safety measures in boxing.
By taking on the position, Amarteifio emphasized the importance of the task, particularly in protecting the image of Ghanaian athletics and African sports at large.
Before the 21-day deadline, he committed to a quick and comprehensive inquiry provided all stakeholders were entirely cooperative. He also appealed to the press to cover the matter with responsibility owing to global attention.
