Um Ji-sung, who plays a crucial role in shaping the future of South Korean football, might have the opportunity to join Luka Modrić’s squad. This development comes after reports emerged that Modrić plans to take up co-ownership of Swansea City even though he continues his career with Real Madrid.
Fabrizio Romano, an expert on the European football transfer market, announced via his social media platform on the 15th (local Korean time) that Modric would become a co-owner of a football club even though he continues to play actively for Real Madrid.
The 2018 Ballon d'Or recipient, Modric, who is currently 39 years old, has a contract with Real Madrid that runs through the conclusion of this season. Reports suggest he wishes to continue playing for Real Madrid next year. However, it’s uncertain if Modric will still be partaking in matches for Real Madrid come 2026.
Should journalist Fabrizio Romano’s statement hold true, it would indicate that Modric has presumably completed preparations for his post-retirement life.
Romano states that Luka Modric is poised to join as a minor co-owner of Swansea City, a team in the English Football League (EFL) Championship, which is considered a secondary division.
Just because Modric becomes the owner of the team doesn't affect his career. If the contract is renewed, he can continue to play for Real Madrid.
Swansea was relegated from the English Premier League (EPL) in 2018, having won the Carabao Cup in 2013.
Modric's contract for participation in club ownership has been signed and the announcement as the club's new small owner appears imminent.
Currently, the link between Modric and the present ownership or the level of investment remains unclear.
Swansea is among the four Welsh teams presently associated with the EFL. Similarly, the Championship league includes Cardiff City.
This team is also renowned for having South Korea’s Um Ji-sung as part of their lineup. Another notable member is Ki Sung-yueng, formerly the captain of the South Korean national soccer team.
Um Ji-sung has performed impressively in the past couple of matches, managing to score some attacking points. Additionally, he played the entire duration during his team’s last league game against Sunderland, which helped secure their win.
During the 2024-2025 campaign, Um Ji-sung netted two goals and provided three assists across 36 official matches. Despite missing numerous fixtures because of ligament issues earlier and midway through the season, he has demonstrated strong form upon his return, reclaiming his position as a key starter.
Despite suffering relegation even in the EFL Championship this season, Swansea has seen some positive developments with their interim management approach. Under acting manager Alan Sheehan’s guidance, they were able to move away from the relegation zone and establish favorable patterns of play.
Swansea City currently ranks 12th with 54 points. It is anticipated that they will remain in the second tier next season.
The focus is now on whether Swansea City can return to the top division when Modric takes over ownership of the club next season.
