In ancient times, earthquakes in China were interpreted as celestial indicators of improper governance. Additionally, China led the way globally in earthquake detection techniques.

 On March 28, 2025, around midday, a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit the area close to Mandalay in central Myanmar, soon after which a secondary shock with a magnitude of 6.7 rattled the region.

 Videos coming out of Myanmar were slower in reaching international audiences, yet once they did, the extent of the destruction was truly heart-wrenching to witness.


 As of April 4, the death toll in Myanmar exceeded 3,300, with hundreds unaccounted for, while 22 fatalities were reported across in neighboring Thailand.


 Prior to modern scientific understanding of moving tectonic plates, ancient Chinese people thought that earthquakes served as celestial alerts caused either by political unrest or an errant leader. According to them, the cosmos functioned based on a fine equilibrium between yin and yang forces; thus, whenever this harmony was disrupted, tremors occurred beneath our feet.


 Consider the earthquake in 780 BC, occurring during the second year of King You’s rule over the Western Zhou dynasty. This seismic event took place close to what was then China's capital city, Xi'an, located within today's Shaanxi Province. The king's astronomer interpreted this natural disaster as an omen indicating potential unrest threatening the governing regime.


 As per his view, the intense, inactive yin force had overwhelmed the vibrant, dynamic yang force, causing an imbalance that made the Earth shake in objection.

 King You gained notoriety for his lack of wisdom. To entertain his favorite concubine, Bao Si, he notoriously staged fake alarms about enemy invasions. This act eventually led him to be associated with an excessive amount of yin energy. In 771 BC, western tribes known as nomads launched an assault on the Western Zhou capital. During this invasion, they managed to kill King You, seize valuables, and take prisoners before retreating.


 The collapse of the Western Zhou dynasty, which happened nine lengthy years following the significant seismic event, served as confirmation for numerous people of the royal astrologer’s explanation regarding the earthquake in 780 BC.


 In 30 BC, a solar eclipse and an earthquake happened on the same day. A courtier advised Emperor Cheng of the Western Han Dynasty that these dual omens were due to fierce rivalry amongst the emperor’s concubines, which generated an overabundance of yin energy.


 Internal conflicts within the royal household triggered turmoil in governance, causing the influence of different concubines’ clans to wax and wane based on their favor with the emperor. Swapping out one powerful clan for another frequently led to violence and disorder.

 However, despite their reliance on supernatural explanations, the ancient Chinese surpassed much of the world in earthquake detection and documentation. The ingenious inventor Zhang Heng (AD 78–139), from the Eastern Han era, developed the world’s first seismoscope. Although this early device didn’t elucidate the reasons behind earthquakes, it was capable of identifying remote seismic activities.


 Skipping ahead to the early Qing dynasty, an extensive earthquake occurred during the rule of Emperor Shunzhi (1644-1661). Several officials stepped down from their positions due to feelings of culpability, believing that poor management under their watch might have provoked divine wrath, leading to this calamity.


 However, Shunzhi held himself accountable, acknowledging that he might have erred and requesting his ministers' assistance to enhance himself.


 Theories regarding earthquakes during premodern China might not align with contemporary scientific understanding, yet they provide valuable insights into past perspectives. These quakes weren’t seen as mere accidents; instead, they were considered celestial warnings against poor governance and unjust periods, indicating significant transformations on the horizon.


 This being said, numerous individuals globally continue to opt for supernatural or religious interpretations when explaining natural disasters. For them, this is the sole means to comprehend the devastation and loss these events bring about.

 政府が約13年振りに新たな被害想定を公表した南海トラフ巨大地震。30年以内の発生確率がこれまでの「70～80%」から「80%程度」に、福岡県内の死者も最大で200人と大幅に引き上げられた。

 新たな想定では、マグニチュードを最大で9クラスとし、震度6弱以上の揺れ、もしくは3メートル以上の津波にさらされる地域が関東から沖縄にかけ31都府県に及ぶと言及。九州では宮崎で、最大震度7、最も高いところで17メートルの津波を想定している。


 最悪の場合、死者は全国で29万8000人。経済被害は実に270兆円と、南海トラフ側に位置する日本列島の太平洋側では壊滅的な被害が想定されている。


 福岡に住む人に話を聞くと「地図上では福岡は上の方で、南海トラフは下の方じゃないですか。だからあんまり被害ないかな…」（18歳･男性）や「大きい数字ではあるけど、結局いつ来るんだろうと…来る来ると言われつつも、今までそこまでないから、大丈夫かな…」（40代･女性）と福岡県が日本海側に位置するイメージが強いせいか、危機感が薄い実情も垣間見える。


 実は、今回の想定で県内の死者が、10人から200人に拡大しているのだ。中でも、特に大きな被害が想定されているのが県の東側、北九州市門司区や苅田町、行橋市などの瀬戸内海、周防灘に面した地区。政府は、これまでも北九州市や豊前市などで最大4メートルの津波を想定していたが今回、最大5メートルに引き上げた。


 また人が流され、命の危険があるとされる深さ30センチ以上の浸水面積を門司区で最大220万平方メートル、小倉南区で170万平方メートルなど、県全体で4倍近く拡大した。福岡県で新たに想定された最大200人の死者は、全て津波によるものとされている。

 「あした地震があってもおかしくない」
</h2>

 門司港レトロ地区。休日には多くの人が訪れる観光スポットだが、新しい想定では、南海トラフ地震で5メートルの津波が襲うとされている。レトロ地区でお菓子を作って売っている店の人は「店の機械が海水に浸かったら、全部ダメになりますんで、もうしょうがないけんですね」と半ば諦め顔だ。また最近、福岡市から引っ越してきたという人は「引っ越してきたばかりで、周りの避難場所を全然、知らないから…。どこなのか、調べはしました」と心配顔で話す。


 作業部会でとりまとめ役を務めた名古屋大学の福和伸夫名誉教授は「そろそろ本気になって対策を進めてほしいと思っております。皆さんに避難意識を持って頂いて、1人でもたくさん逃げて頂きたいというメッセージが、むしろ国のメッセージです」と警鐘を鳴らす。


 また今回の新たな被害想定と合わせて「防災対策の効果」も新たに示された。注目は「津波対策の効果」だ。早めに避難する意識が低い場合だと全国で、最大21万5千人が死亡すると考えられている。これに対し、地震発生から10分で避難を始めた場合、被害が7割減って、亡くなる人は7万人に留まる、と試算されている。大きな被害が出るという想定に変わりはないが、個人の意識を変えれば変化が見込める。


 南海トラフ地震で福岡県に1メートル以上の津波が到達する想定は、最短で191分後。津波に備えた避難経路の確認も、命を守る重要な対策のひとつとなる。

 The earthquake struck approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) northeast of the principal island early Monday morning, as per the U.S. Geological Survey.


 The earthquake occurred at a depth of six miles, making it much shallower compared to the 18-mile deep quake that caused the Boxing Day tsunami.


 However, a minor earthquake can cause stronger surface shaking, which increases the probability of a significant tsunami occurring.

 Dangerous waves might affect coastlines located within 300 kilometers (185 miles) of the earthquake's hypocenter, as per the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.


 Initially, there were no immediate reports of damages since the earthquake hit during the late hours at night.

Menurut survei USGS atau United States Geological Survey, gempa ini menunjukkan kekuatan 7,7 dalam skala Richter dengan titik pusat gempa ditemukan kurang lebih 17,2 kilometer jauhnya dari Kota Mandalay, kota populer kedua di Myanmar, serta mempunyai kedalaman hingga 10 kilometer.


 Menurut laporan dari TribunKaltim.co, Menteri Pertahanan Thailand, Phumtham Wechayachai, menyampaikan bahwa terdapat 90 orang yang belum juga ditemukan setelah bencana bangunan berlantai banyak roboh di Bangkok pada saat proses konstruksinya digelorakan dipengaruhi oleh guncangan gempa kuat itu. Walau demikian, menteri pertahanan tak menjelaskan secara detail tentang upaya pencarian selamat, namun disebut-sebut ada tujuh individu yang sudah bisa diamankan dari sisa-sisa puing-puing bangunan tersebut. Dalam insiden ini, total ada tiga nyawa yang harus melayang sebagai dampak langsung kecelakaannya.


 Gedung di Bangkok ambruk mendadak karena getaran gempa dengan kekuatan 7,7 skala Richter yang menggoyang Myanmar dan Thailand pada hari Jumat (28/3/2025). Kejadian tersebut membuat alat berat jatuh dari atap gedung sementara asap debu pekat mulai merambati langit.


 Suaranya sirene darurat bergema di seantero pusat Kota Bangkok saat ini, seraya armada kendaraan melimpahi jalanan sehingga menciptakan kemacetan lalu lintas yang sangat buruk di wilayah perkotaan yang telah ramai itu. Jaringan layanan angkutan publik seperti kereta bawah tanah serta rel cepat pun harus ditutup secara bertemporer.


 Pemkot menjadikan Bangkok sebagai daerah bencana untuk mempercepat sinergi dalam penanganan bantuan lintalembaga serta mengaktifkan operasi siaga darurat. Area Jakarta beserta sekelilingnya ditempati oleh lebih dari 17 juta jiwa, tidak sedikit yang mendiami gedung pencakar langit.


 April Kani Chawanakul, pegawai kantor di tengah Kota Bangkok, menceritakan bahwa dia pada awalnya tak menyadarinya sebagai gempa bumi saat kejadian tersebut berlangsung.


 "Dia berkata bahwa dia merasa pusing saja," demikian katanya.


 Voranoot Thirawat, seorang pengacara yang bekerja di pusat kota Bangkok, mengatakan bahwa tanda pertama gempa bumi ada sesuatu yang salah satunya muncul ketika dia melihat cahaya misterius berayun maju mundur. Kemudian dia mendengar bangunan berderit saat bergerak maju mundur akibat gelombang kejut.


 Dia dan kawanknya melarikan diri dengan berlari turun 12 anak tangga itu. Dia berkata, "Dalam seluruh hidupku, tak pernah aku mengalami guncangan gempa bumi sehebat ini di Bangkok."




 Paul Vincent, seorang wisatawan asal Inggris, tengah menghabiskan waktunya di salah satu bar tepi jalanan saat guncangan gempa bumi melanda.


 "Selanjutnya, seluruh orang bergegas menuju jalanan, sehingga timbul banyak teriakan dan ketakutan, yang tentunya membuat situasi menjadi lebih buruk," ujarnya.


 Saat dia keluar ke jalanan, ia menyebutkan bahwa ia melihat bangunan bertingkat berayun-ayun dengan air menetes dari kolam renang yang ada di lantai atasnya.


 Menurut laporan Kompas.com, gempa berkekuatan 7,7 skala Richter yang terjadi di Myanmar pada hari Jumat, tanggal 28 Maret 2025, menewaskan 23 orang di Myanmar dan Thailand. Dampak kerasnya getaran ini membuat beberapa struktur roboh, seperti gedung pencakar langit dan jembatan, dengan delapan puluhan pekerja tertimbun di sebuah gedung tinggi yang ambruk di Bangkok.


 Sejumlah beberapa menit usai guncangan pertama, muncul gelombang gempa kedua berkekuatan magnitudo 6,4.


 Pemerintah Myanmar mengumumkan kondisi darurat di keenam daerah yang terpukul paling berat oleh musibaha ini. WHO atau Organisasi Kesehatan Dunia menjelaskan bahwa guncangan kuat itu merupakan ancaman signifikan bagi nyawa dan kesejahteraan warga setempat.


 Kira-kira 20 orang dikonfirmasi tewas di sebuah rumah sakit di ibukota Naypyidaw, Myanmar, menurut pernyataan seorang dokter kepada AFP yang meminta untuk tidak disebut nama.


 Di Thailand, tiga individu telah dipastikan meninggal dunia usai sebuah menara bertingkat yang belum rampung konstruksinya runtuh. Di samping itu, 81 orang lagi dilaporkan menghilang dan diduga tertimbun reruntuhan bangunan tersebut.


 
 Upaya Penyelamatan Korban
 


 Myanmar menderita akibat paling parah dari musibah tersebut. Ribuan korban datang ke rumah sakit di Naypyidaw, tempat bagian gawat darurat yang baru saja roboh menimpa sebuah kendaraan.


 Pada saat senja datang, AFP melaporkan bahwa para pemadam kebakaran tengah mencoba menyelamatkan seorang wanita dan anaknya yang terjebak runtuhan gedung di ibukota Myanmar. Mereka kedua-duanya menderita cedera parah; bagaimana pun juga, pasukan evakuasi merasa sulit untuk sampai kepada mereka, demikian jelas oleh pejabat dari Badan Banjir Merah.




 Di Thailand, Wakil Perdana Menteri Phumtham Wechayachai membenarkan bahwa paling tidak ada tiga orang tenaga kerja meninggal dunia karena gedung runtuh di sekitar area Pasar Chatuchak, Bangkok. Hingga saat ini, 81 pekerja lainnya masih tertimbun di bawah sisa-sisa bangunan tersebut.


 Regu pembebasan terus menggali metode yang aman untuk menyelamatkan orang-orang yang selamat dari sisa-sisa gedung tersebut.


 
 Gempa dengan kekuatan 7,7 mengguncangi Myanmar akibat aktivitas Sesar Sagaing.
 


 Gempa bumi dengan kekuatan 7,7 skala Richter menggetarkan area Mandalay, Myanmar, pada hari Jumat (28/3/2025) jam 1:20 sore waktu Indonesia Bagian Barat. Menurut data dari Badan Meteorologi, Klimatologi, dan Geofisika (BMKG), pusat gempa terletak di titik koordinat 21,76 derajad Utara dan 95,83 derajad Timur, dengan kedalaman sekitar 10 kilometer.


 Berdasarkan posisi hipocenter dan kedalaman kejadian, fenomena ini termasuk dalam kategori gempa dangkal yang dipicu oleh gerakan patahan pada Sesar Besar Sagaing. Studi tentang mekanisme sumber mengindikasikan bahwa getaran bumi tersebut menampilkan model perpindahan lateral.
