Marcus Mumford, frontman for the group Mumford & Sons I wouldn’t mind getting a bit more respect from the late-night host Jimmy Fallon.
Mumford appeared on Tuesday’s episode from "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," and prior to Mumford & Sons' performance, he jokingly criticized how mundane Fallon's intro of them had been during "SNL." 50th anniversary “Homecoming Concert” in February.
The vocalist mentioned that both he and the band members have been acquainted with Fallon for "quite a while" now, and they anticipated that he would greet them by sharing something "particularly heartfelt," or perhaps mention some of their collective achievements or their history with "Saturday Night Live."
Rather than what Mumford might have wished, Fallon’s intro at the time was quite short: “Ladies and gentlemen, Mumford & Sons.”
This week on his show, Fallon said he initially had a sincere speech planned for introducing Mumford & Sons, but Lorne Michaels vetoed it. However, Mumford didn’t seem convinced by this explanation.
You completely did those for other artists," he said with a laugh. "You were going on and on about Lady Gaga!
Further along in this week's episode, Fallon was granted a second chance as he delivered an impressive three-and-a-half-minute address preceding the band's musical act.
Fallon delved into Mumford & Sons' past, tracing their journey from their initial Grammy victories to their debut performance at the Glastonbury Festival.
He talked at length about each member of the trio, encompassing Mumford, Ted Duane, and Ben Lovett. He delved deeply into their individual pastimes outside of music as well.
“We all know he’s a complete food enthusiast,” Fallon mentioned about Lovett.
He proceeded to discuss the group's lyrics, highlighting significant "literary influences," and naturally moved on to talk about their attire, characterizing their look as a "timeless, somewhat tough classic aesthetic" marked by earthy colors, natural materials, and a blend of old-fashioned and contemporary styles.
Several instances of laughter from the band members were observed as they waited onstage during Fallon’s extended intro.
