The theme of the new Australian $5 note was revealed following the Reserve Bank’s choice to cease including a depiction of the British monarch.

Australia's $5 note Since 1992, it has featured the visage of the late Queen Elizabeth II, however, the new version will not incorporate King Charles III’s image.

The Reserve Bank stated today that the banknotes will honor Australia's Indigenous communities, with the theme titled "Connecting Country."

As stated by the RBA, the images on the $5 banknote ought to acknowledge the profound relationship that Indigenous Australians share with their land—an attachment that is both emotional and spiritual, as well as physical,

Central to this topic is acknowledging the role played by First Nations communities in the restoration and preservation of our natural surroundings.

By leveraging traditional ecological knowledge, First Nations people persist in their role as caretakers to maintain and protect Country.

The theme was selected following over 2100 entries from members of the public.

The final design hasn't been approved yet, and the RBA stated it needs to "steer clear of being tokenistic or stereotypical."

The chosen theme will guide artists as they create a new design for the fresh $5 Australian banknotes.

"The overall theme for the banknote represents a hopeful future, where the strong bond between First Nations people and their land is honoured and revered," the RBA further explained.

The reverse side of the note will still display Parliament House in Canberra following the redesign.

Queen Elizabeth II graced Australia's smallest denomination currency as she appeared on the $1 bill from 1966 to 1984, and has been featured on the $5 note since 1992 up until now.

In 2023, the RBA declared that it would substitute the image of Queen Elizabeth II on one side of the currency notes with a design that celebrates the culture and history of the Indigenous Australians after her passing in 2022.

The anticipation for the new banknote suggests it will require multiple years for both design and printing processes.

The present version of Australia’s $5 banknote has been in circulation since 2016.
