A significant dip in copper prices had a substantial negative effect on local markets, which could also influence those in the UK because of these companies' listings in both regions.


 Although Australia has limited direct trading ties with the US, the repercussions through China and other major Asian economies experiencing significant tariff impacts might negatively affect our heavily export-dependent economy," noted Josh Gilbert, a market analyst at eToro, in a statement. "This would be particularly true should global demand decrease and commodity prices drop.


 US stock futures took a nosedive, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average down 2.01%, the S&P 500 dropping 2.78%, and the Nasdaq decreasing by 3.3%, signaling a steep decline when trading opens on Thursday. These declines are expected to spread across European markets today, as evidenced by Germany’s DAX futures which were already off by 1.89% at 5:30 am CET.


 Tech stocks are poised for a downturn, as shown during the extended trading period on Wall Street. All seven major technology companies saw substantial drops in after-hours trading, includingTesla which fell by 4.5%, Apple dropping 2.3%, and Nvidia decreasing by 2.4%. "This will undoubtedly have an effect on these leading tech firms, particularly consideringApple's significant presence inChina andNvidia's dependence onTaiwan," Gilbert noted further.

 On Thursday, the MPF announced aHK$34.8 billion investment return for the first quarter, as per data provided by MPF Ratings, an independent research company.


 The 379 individual funds under the MPF achieved an average return of 2.7 percent in the initial quarter, marking the highest performance since a 4.1 percent increase in the first quarter of 2023. As for the year 2024, the MPF reported a return of 8.8 percent.

 The outcome increased the MPF's overall assets to HK$1.338 trillion by the end of March. This figure includes both investment returns and fresh contributions made by members, amounting to HK$279,100 for each individual. Compared to the previous year, this represents a growth of 13%, reflecting an average rise of HK$30,000 per member’s portfolio.

 In the first quarter, Hong Kong and China equity funds led with returns of 12 percent, trailed by European equity funds which saw gains of 6.3 percent. Other equity funds completed the top trio with a return of 4.4 percent, according to data provided by MPF Ratings.


 US equity funds had the poorest performance, declining by 5.3 percent, whereas global equity funds dropped by 1.8 percent.

 "In addition, the growing array of economic stimulus measures implemented by the Chinese government provides momentum for expansion," he stated.


 The Hang Seng Index has risen by 15 percent this year following an increase of 18 percent in 2024, whereas the Hang Seng Tech Index has seen a gain of 21 percent year-to-date.


 In contrast, the S&P 500 dropped 4.6 percent during the initial three months of the year, marking its poorest performance at the beginning of a year since the opening quarter of 2022. Experts pointed to concerns over inflation and an impending U.S. recession as reasons for this decline.


 Launched in 2000, Hong Kong’s Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) is a required savings program where both employers and employees contribute monthly amounts. These contributions can make up to 5 percent of the employee's monthly income towards their retirement fund.


 The required contribution has an upper limit of HK$3,000 per month—HK$1,500 contributed by each the employee and their employer. These contributions go into investment options selected by the members themselves. The money can be withdrawn once the individual reaches 65 years of age.


 According to the data from MPF Ratings, mixed-asset funds, which include investments in both stocks and bonds, saw an increase of 3.6 percent during the initial three months of the year.


 A standard investment strategy (SIS) that adopts a varied approach to investing globally in both equities and fixed-income securities adjusts the level of risk based on an individual’s age. This particular method showed inconsistent outcomes; SIS choices with greater emphasis on stocks experienced a decline of 0.4 percent during the initial three months, whereas those leaning towards bond investments saw a rise of 0.5 percent.


 Moving forward, Chung from Bay Insurance advised the members to remain cautious about potential market fluctuations for the rest of 2025.


 While the newly formed U.S. administration is posing a threat to the global economy through proposed increases in tariffs, other nations stand ready to counter these moves," he stated. "Such tariff hikes could trigger inflation within the United States, which would consequently impact both the interest rates set by the U.S. Federal Reserve and various economic activities within the country. Members of the MPF should brace themselves for potential volatility in financial markets.


 Members of the Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) who are comfortable with taking on greater risks might want to allocate some of their savings into Hong Kong and Chinese equity funds. The reasoning behind this advice is that the mainland authorities possess numerous strategies for stimulating economic activity, an effort that will likely have positive ripple effects on Hong Kong’s economy as well, he explained.

 (세종=디위다 |) 이상희 기자 = 원/달러 환율은 3일 미국 정부의 상호 관세 공표로 인해 일시적으로 올랐다가 다시 내려갔습니다.


 이 날 서울의 외환 시장에서는 미국 달러화를 기준으로 한 원화 환율이 오전 10시 10분 현재 전일 오후 3시 30분에 정산된 종가보다 0.1원 하락하여 1,466.5원을 기록하며 거래되고 있었다.


 환율이 4.4원 상승하여 1,471.0원으로 시작된 이후 최고치인 1,472.5원까지 치솟았다가 반대로 전환되어 일시적으로 1,464.3원까지 하락했습니다.


 그 날 오전 초반 달러화 가치가 올랐는데, 이것은 미합중국의 상호 관세 부과 발표로 인해 나타난 투자자의 위험 회피 현상 때문으로 해석됩니다.


 도널드 트럼프 미 대통령은 9일부로 한국에서 제조된 모든 품목이 미국으로 반입될 때마다 25%의 추가 관세가 부과되도록 하는 계획을 공식화하였다.


 중국(34%)과 대만(32%)에 비해서는 조금낮지만, 유럽연합(EU·20%), 일본(24%), 그리고 영국(10%)보다는 약간 높습니다.


 미국이라는 세계 최대의 시장이 모든 수입 품목에 대해 관세를 매기는 ‘무역전쟁’을 정식으로 시작함에 따라, 이로 인해 발생할 수 있는 수출 감소가 예상되는 상황에서 추가적인 경제성장률 저하도 걱정되고 있다.


 원화가 위험 통화로 간주되면서 그 가치가 떨어지게 되었고, 이는 결국 원/달러 환율을 오르게 만들었다.


 그러나 곧 환율은 내려가는 경향을 나타냈다. 시장에서 관세의 상호적용이 결국 미국에게도 해롭다는 인식이 확산되었기 때문으로 보입니다.


 백석현 신한은행의 이코노미스트는 "상호 관세 부과는 전 세계 경제에 불리하지만 미국 경제도 마찬가지로 피해를 볼 수밖에 없다"고 지적하며 "환율은 서로 비교되는 개념이므로 달러 가치 하락으로 인해 원/달러 환율 변동을 걱정할 필요성이 줄었다"라고 설명했습니다.


 그는 “미국이 초기에는 기초 관세로 10%를 매기다가 나중에 상호 관세를 부과하기 시작한다는 점에서 5일과 9일 사이에 어떤 합의 가능성도 남아 있다고 해석되는 부분도 있는 것 같다”라고 설명했다.


 같은 시각 주요 6개국 통화 대비 달러 가치를 나타내는 달러인덱스는 전날보다 0.95% 내린 103.257을 기록했다.


 외환시장은 4일 헌법재판소의 윤석열 대통령 탄핵 심판 결과도 주시하고 있다.


 동일한 시간대에 원/엔 환율은 100엔당 990.68원으로 표시되었다. 하루 전 같은 시각의 기준값인 977.77원보다 12.91원 상승했다.


 엔/달러 환율이 1.31% 하락하여 148,000엔을 나타냈습니다.

 老後資金2,000万円不足問題のインパクトから、「老後のために2,000万円は貯める！」と目標を定めている人は多いようです。しかし、2,000万円の貯金があるからといって、老後の安心は絶対かといえば、そのようなことはありません。

 妻と過ごすはずだった、安泰の老後
</h2>

 年金不安から資産運用が当たり前になりつつあるなか、最終的な目標額はいくらなのでしょうか。金融広報中央委員会『家計の金融行動に関する世論調査（二人以上世帯）』によると、金融資産目標額は平均で3,014万円。中央値は1,500万円でした。年齢別にみていくと、60代で平均3,397万円、中央値は2,000万円。70代では平均2,723万円で、中央値は2,000万円。一時、老後資金2,000万円不足と騒がれていました。その余波でしょうか、老後を見据えて「2,000万円」をひとつの目標にしていると推測されます。


 75歳の原和夫さん（仮名）もそのひとり。長年会社員として働き、退職金とコツコツ貯めた預貯金を合わせ、65歳の時点で老後資金は約2,000万円を確保していました。


 「ひとり1,000万円、夫婦であれば2,000万円あれば、老後は安心だと思っていたんです」


 65歳から受け取り始めた年金は月18万円ほど。その3年後には妻も年金を受け取り始め、派手な暮らしではないものの、妻とふたり、穏やかな老後を送っていました。


 しかし、結婚48年を迎えて、妻が68歳で急逝。そこから、原さんの生活は大きく狂い始めます。最初に家計を大きく圧迫したのは、自宅の修繕費でした。


 
 「持ち家だったので、住居費の心配はないと思っていました。でも、築35年ともなると、あちこちガタがくるんですよ」
 


 特に深刻だったのは、水回りと屋根の劣化。そこに追い打ちをかけるように大型台風の襲来。それによりキッチンや浴室の配管から水漏れが発生し、屋根瓦の一部も剥がれました。修理を後回しにするわけにもいかず、見積もりを取ると、なんと約500万円。痛い出費でしたが、長年妻と過ごしたマイホーム。いつまでもここで住み続けたい……そう考えると仕方のない出費でした。

 妻に先立たれ、崩れ始めた老後プラン
</h2>

 さらに、妻に先立たれひとり暮らしになったことで、日常の生活費もじわじわと増えていきました。家事はすべて妻に任せきりだった原さんは家事力ゼロ。次第に家のなかは散らかり放題。洗濯はもちろん、食事も自分で作ることはできません。乱れていくばかりの日常をどうにかしようと、家事代行サービスを利用するようになりました。さらに外食の回数も増え、妻とふたり暮らしのときよりもかさむようになったのです。そのような生活により、毎月10万～15万円程度を貯金から取り崩し。


 そこへ追い打ちをかけたのが、健康の問題でした。「加齢とともに、病院に行く機会が増えました。持病の薬代に加え、歯の治療や白内障の手術など、思った以上にお金がかかるんです」。こうした想定外の出費が続き、原さんの貯蓄は右肩下がり。


 焦った原さんは、ある決断をします。世間では「資産運用」ブーム。この流れに乗れば、資産を増やすことができるかもしれない……何とも安直な理由で投資をスタートさせます。


 当初は、銀行の勧めで投資信託を購入。しかし値動きが思った以上に激しく、不安になった原さんは、途中で売却。結果的に、数十万円の損失を出してしまいました。それでも諦めきれず、今度は個別株に手を出します。「高配当株なら年金の足しになる」との触れ込みを信じましたが、株価の変動に一喜一憂する日々が続き、また途中で売却。結局、利益を出すどころか損失ばかりが積み重なり、10年前に2,000万円あった貯蓄は、ほぼ底をついてしまったのです。


 
 「まさか、夢だと言ってくれ……」
 


 70代半ばにして、生活レベルを大幅に下げざるを得ない状況に直面している原さん。


 
 「年金18万円だけで、この先の生活を賄わないといけません。でも家の維持費もかかるだろうし、医療費のことも考えないといけない。不安しかないですね」
 


 原さんのケースは決して特殊なものではありません。老後の想定外の出費は、誰にでも起こりうること。特に、自宅の修繕費や医療費は、思った以上にかかることが多いといいます。さらに原さんの場合、未経験ながら投資に手を出し、損失をさらに拡大させました。「まさか、こんなはずでは……」と後悔しないために。老後資金の準備は、想定以上の余裕をもって考えておくことが大切なのかもしれません。

 “If you move £20,000 into a cash ISA this tax year, you can move the rest after midnight on 5 April and protect it all from the taxman.”

 This is significant because no tax is owed on presents you bestow if you survive for seven years following the gifting — with the exception being when the gift is within a trust arrangement.
