A Russian military tribunal handed down a 16-year jail term to Vadim Chaly, a 30-year-old from Kyiv, accused of plotting to dispatch explosives-filled parcels to high-ranking Russian military officers. This information was relayed by state-run Russian news outlets on April 10th.

Chaly, having admitted guilt and requested clemency because of his mother’s poor health, will spend the initial three years behind bars followed by the remainder of his sentence at a stringent facility.

He was additionally penalized with a fine of 500,000 rubles ($5,900), and upon his release, he will be subject to two more years of limitations on his liberty.

The prosecution claimed that Chaly was brought into Ukraine’s Security Service SBU ) through the online platform Avito, where he was reportedly promised small payments for mailing explosives to Russian colonels.

"After finishing the assigned tests, they (SBU) assured him he would receive one thousand rubles for delivering explosives to three Russian colonels," according to investigation documents acquired by Russian The state-run news agency TASS reports, "For the final bundle, they offered 4,000 rubles."

Apparently, none of the three packages exploded.

The legal proceedings were initiated in June 2024, with Chaly having resided in Russia when he was detained.

This case occurs within an overarching clampdown in Russia, where officials have increased arrests, prosecutions, and extended sentencing. prison sentences since the beginning of the comprehensive invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
