Gospel artist Hellen Muthoni has encountered severe backlash from Kenyan netizens following a video of hers that became widely circulated online.

In the video snippet, Muthoni and emerging artist Stella Wangari were seen taking a picture with their peers. During this time, she was spotted wiping her phone using Wangari’s dress.
Everything appeared joyful and humorous in the clip, with Wangari appearing unperturbed by the musician’s actions. They went on to take pictures together amid lighthearted banter.
Kenyans respond following Muthoni’s deeds
Social media was inundated with comments, as numerous users voiced their dissatisfaction with Muthoni’s behavior. Many argued that this showcased questionable decision-making, particularly considering her role as a gospel minister and counselor.
Wairimu Polly:
Disappointing and unfortunate. It’s time we raise our standards in life. I can’t help but ponder how junior staff and interns are being handled.
Ecandi:
You had the option to overlook this tale, Hellen. Posting this video reveals your lack of decency. We are indifferent to Stella’s feelings—regardless of whether she approves or not. What you did was entirely inappropriate!
Reen Njeri:
Not amusing, Muthoni. Did you really have no other clothes to wipe your phone with? Or was your outfit too special? Disgraceful.
Carol Manegene:
You were aware it would become popular, and now you're attempting to clean up your reputation. We strongly disapprove of this type of behavior! It isn’t even amusing.
Tabitha Maina:
You're attempting to console yourself, yet it won't improve your feelings! Honestly speaking, just because she admires you as a role model and is reserved does not imply that she shouldn't be treated with respect. Show more consideration in the future.
Nurse Harun Mburu:
I personally don’t find much fault in what happened. Maybe the woman’s dress was simply made from nicer material that could have been used for wiping the camera instead. It isn't clear whether an agreement was reached between them. I prefer to assume she acted with consent. Such incidents occur frequently, particularly amongst women. In fact, some even go as far as sharing their clothing.
Wanjiru Zippy Ngungi:
“We have so many deputy Jesuses here. Have you even thought that maybe the texture of her own garment wouldn’t have worked? Why is it that we’re always quick to judge others? The owner of the dress might have been fine with it.”
Did Hellen Muthoni apologise?
After facing significant criticism, the gospel artist penned an earnest apology to Wangari and expressed gratitude to her supporters and followers who highlighted her error.
"No matter if I sought approval or if this occurs frequently, irrespective of our relationship—none of these factors can excuse my actions. As a role model and a preacher of the gospel, I genuinely apologize to all, but particularly to Stella Wangari," she penned.
Although valuing the views of her supporters, the gospel artist acknowledged that she had taken away valuable lessons from the experience and assured everyone that this type of situation would not be repeated.
