 뷰티 산업은 이제 여성이 단독으로 차지하는 영역이 아니게 되었다. 개인 관리와 미용을 위해 시간과 자금을 허비하지 않으려는 남성들을 '그루밍족'이라 부른다. 현재 중년 세대인 40대에서 60대로 구성된 '중년 그루밍족'들이 뷰티 업계의 새 얼굴로 등장하고 있으며, 이를 중심으로 한 소비 패턴 변화가 두드러지고 있습니다.


 글로벌 시장조사 기관 유로모니터에 따르면, 지난해 국내 맨즈 뷰티 시장 규모는 전년 대비 4% 증가한 1조 2000억 원 수준이었다. 또한 2022년 우리나라의 연간 남성 스킨케어 관리 소비액은 1인당 9.6달러(약 1만 3900원)로 전 세계 1위를 차지하기도 했다. 특히 K-뷰티라 불리는 한국 화장품 시장이 확장됐는데, SNS를 중심으로 뷰티 콘텐츠를 다루는 남성 인플루언서가 증가한 점이 영향을 끼친 것으로 풀이된다.


 김주덕 성신여자대학교 뷰티산업학과 교수는 “맨즈 뷰티 시장은 20~30대 남성을 기점으로 커졌다. 외모도 경쟁력이라는 인식이 확대되면서 자신을 가꾸는 이들이 많아졌고, 40대 이상 중년도 이러한 기류에 편승하게 된 것이다”면서 “더욱이 현재의 시니어는 은퇴 후에도 외부 활동을 활발하게 하며 자기 관리를 지속하는 경향을 보인다”고 말했다.


 젊음 추구하는 이유


 중년이 되면 신체적 노화를 겪는다. 남성은 특히 피부 탄력이 줄고 얼굴에 주름이 늘어나며, 탈모가 진행되거나 흰머리가 늘어난다. 또한 체중이 증가하기 쉽고, 그 결과 만성질환에 노출될 위험이 높아진다. 이러한 신체적 변화는 중년 남성의 자존감 저하와 스트레스 유발 요인으로 작용한다.


 최근 액티브 시니어들은 신체 노화로 인한 스트레스에서 벗어나기 위해 적극적으로 노력하는 경향을 보인다. 기대 수명이 증가함에 따라 여생을 젊고 활기차게 보내고자 하는 의욕이 외모 관리로 이어진 것으로 보인다. 외모를 잘 가꾼 중년 남성은 대인관계가 좋고, 사회적으로 성공한 이미지를 갖출 수 있다.


 전양진 명지대 디자인학부 교수의 논문 ‘신중년 소비자의 외모와 여가 활동, 삶의 질 인식에 관한 연구’에 따르면, 여가 활동으로 사람들과 교류하는 중년 세대는 외모의 중요성을 크게 인식하는 경향이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 50~70세 미만 남녀 430명을 대상으로 한 설문조사 결과, 응답자의 70.1%가 일상생활에서 외모 관리가 중요하며, 외모가 자신의 정체성을 표현하는 데 도움이 된다고 답했다.


 즉 사회심리적 요인이 크게 작용해 중년 그루밍족이 외모 관리를 하는 것으로 보인다. 그리고 그들이 추구하는 미적 기준은 ‘젊음’이라고 정의할 수 있다. 단순히 나이보다 젊어 보이는 외모를 넘어 자연스럽고 건강하게 나이 드는 것을 지향한다.


 김주덕 교수는 “젊음 추구 일환으로 중년 그루밍족은 피부 탄력, 주름 개선 등의 효과가 있는 화장품을 선호하고, 흰 피부를 갖고자 자외선 차단제도 챙겨 바른다. 또한 피부뿐 아니라 두피·헤어 관리, 다이어트 등에도 관심이 많다”고 말했다. 더불어 김 교수는 나이가 들수록 피부 장벽 기능이 떨어져 흡수가 잘 안 되기 때문에 피부·두피·보디 케어 등의 뷰티 디바이스 기기를 함께 사용하면 효능·효과가 높아진다고 덧붙였다.


 중년 그루밍족을 위한 조언


 중년 그루밍족은 더 나아가 미용 성형에도 높은 관심을 보인다. 피부과나 성형외과를 찾는 이들이 꾸준히 느는 추세다. 피부과에서는 리프팅 레이저 시술, 보톡스, 스킨케어 등을 받고자 하며, 성형외과에서는 눈밑 지방 재배치, 상안검·하안검 성형, 안면거상술, 모발 이식 등이 중년 남성에게 인기 있는 수술·시술이다.


 2020년에 대한민국의 '대한피부과학회지'에서 공개된 자료によると、40～60세 사이의 남성들이 피부과 전문 병원을 찾는 주요 사유 중 하나는 두발탈취였다. 이와 같은 현상은 유전자적 특징이나 성호르몬 그리고 스트레스 등의 여러 가지 원인이 작용하여 일어날 수 있고, 나이가 많아짐에 따라 그 비중도 점점 커지는 것으로 나타났습니다. 실제로 조사해 본 결과, 40대에서는 약 28.7%, 50대에는 대략 35.7%, 마지막으로 60대에서는 무려 42.9%라는 숫자가 나왔다고 합니다.


 교수인 김주덕씨는 "피부의 노화 혹은 탈모가 많이 진행된 경우에는 어떠한 고급 화장품이나 성형 수술, 치료법이라도 큰 효과를 기대하기 힘들다"라고 말하며, "60세 이전부터 가능한 빨리 피부 관리를 시작하는 게 중요하다"고 강조했습니다. 그러나 그는 추가적으로 "노화 방지를 위해 관리한다 생각해야지 완벽하게 과거의 어릴 때로 돌아갈 것이라고 여기서는 안된다"라는 의견을 표현하였습니다.


 또한 중요하게 생각되어지는 부분은 일정한 유지 관리가 필요하다는 것이다. 비뇨 시술에도 제약된 효력이 있으며, 수술을 받았다고 하더라도 노화 과정은 중단될 수 없다는 사실이다. 마찬가지로 두피 문제 또한 가발 착용이나 모발 이식만으로 해결되는 문제가 아니며, 실제로 어떤 요인들이 탈모를 유발했는지를 파악하여 이를 고려해 개인에게 적합한 치료법과 관리를 계속해서 적용하는 것이 필수적입니다. 마지막으로, 노화 방지와 관련된 최초의 중요한 조치이면서 핵심적인 방법은 규칙적으로 건전한 음식 섭취 습관을 만드는 것, 정기적인 운동 참여, 담배 피우기를 삼가는 것과 술 소비 줄이는 것입니다. 이러한 원칙들을 기억하셔야 합니다.

 Terdapat tiga model sewa pakaian yang digunakan oleh badan tersebut, yakni sewa berdasarkan keanggotaan, langganan bulanan, serta persewaan individu. Dalam sistem keanggotaannya, pelanggan melakukan registrasi dan dapat meminjam baju selama periode tertentu, mirip dengan cara mengambil buku dari sebuah perpustakaan.


 Bagi sistem langganan, pelanggan diharapkan melakukan pembayaran setiap bulan serta mendapatkan opsi pakaian yang bisa dipakai secara bergantian. Sementara itu, program individu dirancang khusus bagi para penyewa yang ingin meminjam satu jenis pakaian spesifik untuk keperluan tertentu, misalnya kostum berkendara jetski.


 Model bisnis ini, seperti yang ditunjukkan oleh riset itu, memerlukan periode cukup lama. Tahapannya meliputi pengiriman baju bekas, inspeksi item-item tersebut, proses pembersihannya, sampai akhirnya siap lagi dipinjamkan ke konsumen. Para peneliti menyatakan bahwa mayoritas sistem semacam ini perlu dukungan ekstra serta waktu signifikan supaya dapat tetap eksis dalam persaingan pasaran.

 Penelitian serupa menunjukkan bahwa sektor fashion merupakan kontributor utama terhadap pencemaran global. Misalnya, lebih dari 90 persen sampah pakaian di Swedia berkontribusi pada perubahan iklim secara merugikan. Akan tetapi, para peneliti belum menguji efek lingkungan dari tiap jenis bisnis dalam laporan tersebut.


 Hasil penelitian dari Chalmers University of Technology mengindikasikan bahwa 70% efek pada lingkungan karena pakaian timbul selama proses pembuatannya, sementara sisanya berkaitan erat dengan perilaku belanja para konsumen. Menurut Frida, sistem sewa pakaian bisa membantu meningkatkan durasi penggunaan setiap item pakaian tersebut jika dibandingkan dengan pakaian-pakaian yang jarang dipakai dan hanya dibiarkan begitu saja di dalam lemari. Di Amerika Serikat, tiap orang cenderung membuang kurang lebih 81 pon atau sekira 36,74 kilogram pakaian per tahun. Sementara itu, jumlah sampah pakaian di Uni Eropa mencapai kisaran 26 pon atau sekitar 11,79 kg per orang pertahun.
