Cruise holidays are usually a chance to shake off any worries and set sail on a new adventure.

However, there are a few easily-made mistakes that could make your holiday much more stressful than expected.

But don't worry.

Mike Graham, a cruising specialist from Destination2 Here to help you steer clear of common pitfalls for beginners.

The cruise pro states: "A common error made by newcomers to cruising is packing too much luggage. Although it might be alluring to gear up for various contingencies, you certainly do not require six evening wear options."

Cruise ships are becoming increasingly informal, so opt for adaptable clothing items. Believe me; you’ll find yourself wearing your swimwear or relaxed outfits far more often than that tuxedo you assumed would be necessary.

Cabin spaces on cruises tend to be quite compact, hence it's advisable to keep extra clothes stored away at home.

Mike points out that another common error frequent newcomers make is 'overlooking the daily planner'.

The specialist clarifies: "The vessel's schedule is packed with events, ranging from salsa classes to culinary demonstrations — this ensures you won’t overlook an enjoyable activity that suits your tastes."

Ensure you investigate all the amenities provided by your cruise ship prior to boarding. It’s advisable to reserve shore excursions, dining appointments, and spa services ahead of time as many cruise lines suggest doing so.

'They often provide an app or personalised planner to help you with this and it's a good idea to take advantage of it, as popular experiences can fill up quickly.'

Forgetting to review the ship’s plan might cause passengers to miss out on enjoyable activities, but several other infractions could lead to displeasing the crew.

Mike discloses: "Lying out monopolizing a sunbed all day ranks as one of the top offenses—don’t become that individual! Occupying a sunbed with just a towel for hours not only annoys fellow visitors but can irk the staff too. Show consideration and secure a place only when you intend to utilize it."

On certain cruise ships, crew members may take away passengers' belongings from a sunbed if they remain unoccupied for more than an hour.

However, that is not the sole method by which cruise holidaymakers can irritate the staff.

Mike points out that another factor that might annoy cruise staff is dawdling when leaving events. "No matter whether you're at the buffet, restaurant, or participating in group activities, sticking around once they conclude may delay the crew’s ability to tidy up and get ready for subsequent sessions," he explains. He emphasizes that monitoring time frames contributes significantly to maintaining efficiency throughout all operations, thereby guaranteeing a pleasant experience for all involved parties.

When discussing the buffet, Mike has offered valuable tips to help passengers enjoy the 'most recently stocked' variety of dishes.

The expert states: "A frequent error made by newcomers to buffets is showing up when they're busiest, typically shortly after the ship’s tours conclude or within typical mealtimes."

'If you want to skip the crowds and get the freshest selection, try to hit the buffet right after it opens or right before closing.

'Another hack is not to be afraid to ask the staff when certain dishes are freshly made or coming out. They're often happy to share tips on when the best options will be available, so you can swoop in before they disappear.

'Remember it's a cruise, not a race. There's no need to grab everything in sight. The food isn't going anywhere, there will be plenty of time for second or third servings.'
