Earlier today, the Lok Sabha approved the Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 Following an extended marathon debate where members of the India bloc vehemently contested the bill, asserting it would undermine principles, the BJP along with its partners robustly endorsed it. They argued that the legislation would foster greater openness and improve the efficacy of Waqf boards.
The bill was approved following the rejection of amendments proposed by the opposition members. The session continued past midnight to ensure the legislation was enacted.
Speaker Om Birla subsequently declared the outcome of the vote. He stated, "Pending any errors, Ayes 288, Noes 232. The motion has been approved with a majority supporting it," he noted.
The updated bill was presented by the government following the incorporation of suggestions from the Joint Parliamentary Committee that reviewed the legislation initially introduced in August of the previous year.
The bill seeks to amend the Act of 1995. The Bill seeks to improve the administration and management of waqf properties in India. It aims to overcome the shortcomings of the previous act and enhance the efficiency of Waqf boards, improving the registration process and increasing the role of technology in managing waqf records.
