To ensure a successful organization and thorough readiness for the upcoming National Sports Festival known as Gateway Games 2024, the Ogun State government handed out cheques worth N500,000 each to 33 sports associations within the state on Wednesday.
The 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival is set to take place from May 16 to 30 in the state.
The state athletes for the festival are also expected to commence closed-door camping with immediate effect.
During the ceremony where checks were presented at the June 12 Cultural Center, the Secretary to the Ogun State Government, Tokunbo Talabi, emphasized that this financial backing highlighted the administration's firm dedication to ensuring the success of their team at the sporting event.
"I'm thrilled to share that Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has generously agreed to provide N500,000 in support for each of the 33 sports associations taking part in the festival," Talabi stated.
The Governor has approved a new framework and procedure aimed at boosting sports development.
The SSG emphasized that the subsidy is not something to be indiscriminately distributed among people; rather, it serves as a means to guarantee proper training for the state athletes participating in the festival.
It falls upon each of you to report on all these small actions. Initially, this might happen one or two times, after which we'll review the feedback. If the response is positive, it won’t serve as an occasion for generosity, which is precisely why the Governor is assigning this duty to the Commissioner for Sports Development.
"The government, particularly the offices of the Secretary to the State Government and the Governor via the Secretary to the Ogun State Government, will establish a system to review the feedback generated from our initiatives. This process aims at refining our approach to ensure sustainability," he concluded.
He observed that the National Sports Festival provided Ogun with an opportunity to establish a solid framework for sports growth within the state, further mentioning that with its recently developed sporting facilities, Ogun has earned recognition as one of the leading states in this area.
He stated, "Avoid being mischievous; you understand occasionally, certain individuals might just act without cause and post things online. This approach doesn't foster growth—it’s all about causing a stir. Some of these folks admitted in the past that their motive was simply to boost traffic to their social accounts."
However, when you offer constructive criticism, we are prepared and eager to receive it.
