Another New York retail landmark is about to fade into history.

Macy's has verified that it will be shutting down permanently Its large location in Massapequa within Sunrise Mall On April 11, signaling the conclusion of a journey that started in 1973.

The three-story, 20,000-square-foot department store has been a cornerstone of the mall for over five decades — but like many brick-and-mortar giants, it’s fallen victim to a record-breaking tide of store closures.

The massive store has been conducting clearance sales since February, offering discounts of up to 60 percent off the original prices.

The closing is part of Macy’s wider plan to shut down 66 outlets in 23 states by the close of the year.

The closure of Massapequa’s store marks the beginning of three Macy’s locations scheduled to shut down on Long Island, with plans for additional smaller-sized outlets in New Hyde Park and Huntington Station also slated to close before the end of the year.

Based on Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) documents, the firm is letting go of 77 workers.

For long-serving employees, the information wasn't surprising.

The Sunrise Mall has been barely clinging to life, facing a mass departure of retailers and decreasing customer visits.

The shopping center, previously home to well-known stores such as HomeGoods and Raymour and Flanigan, will retain only one retailer post-April 11: Dick's Sporting Goods.

Nefta Golding, a Macy's staff member with 15 years of experience at the store, stated Newsweek She was merely taken aback by when the closure happened.

"She mentioned, 'I expected us to have the remainder of the year,'" she stated.

However, similar to numerous stores throughout the U.S., shutting down has become the standard resolution for well-known brands that have seen their appeal wane due to giants such as Amazon, Walmart, Shein, and Temu.

Retail experts anticipates that around 15,000 stores will close down across the country this year, exceeding the previous pattern by over twice establish a record for 7,000 store closings in 2024.

"The consolidation among ordinary retailers has been ongoing for several years," Steve Dennis, a retail analyst and co-founder of Sageberry Consulting, previously told Diwida.

Retailers have faced issues due to excessive growth, poor implementation, and strong competition specifically from Walmart and Amazon.

The retail drubbing has has been especially tough on shopping centers that previously depended on customers doing most of their shopping in physical stores.

By the end of 2024, Macy's owned over 500 stores.

The firm also managed over 150 Bluemercury cosmetic stores across the United States.

A representative from Macy's did not address the closure of the Massapequa location when speaking with Diwida, but they stated that the company remains "committed to delivering outstanding service."

They similarly suggested customers visit Macy's online store locator to discover their closest shopping destination.
