New Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Sunday called a snap election for April 28, saying he needed a strong mandate to deal with the threat that U.S. President Donald Trump 's tariffs pose to the economy.
Even though the upcoming election wasn’t scheduled till October 20, Carney aims to take advantage of his Liberal party’s significant upturn in poll standings since January, following Trump’s threats. Canada and former prime minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation.
"We are confronting the biggest challenge of our lives due to President Trump's unwarranted trade measures and his threats to our autonomy," Carney stated.
"There is still considerable work needed to ensure the security and prosperity of Canada. This includes investing in our nation, fostering development, and bringing people together. For this reason, I am seeking a clear endorsement from my fellow citizens," Carney stated to the press following his meeting with the Governor General, who acts as the personal representative of the monarch. He also announced that he had asked the Governor General to dissolve Parliament and call for elections on April 28th, which she approved. King Charles , the head of state of Canada - gave approval to his request for an election.
