An engineering student from India named Divya Tyagi at Pennsylvania State University has made simpler a hundred-year-old mathematical challenge in aerodynamics, thus paving the way for advancements in wind turbine designs.

As per the official Penn State University website, Tyagi, who is pursuing a master’s degree in aerospace engineering, improved upon the work of British aerodynamicist Hermann Glauert. His research centered on enhancing the maximum possible power coefficient of wind turbines.

Although Glauert's model optimized efficiency, it failed to consider important elements such as the forces exerted on the turbine rotor or how the blades flex under wind pressure.

Tyagi's accomplishment significantly enhances Glauert's research by examining the entire set of forces exerted on a turbine, thereby offering a more comprehensive insight into the mechanics of wind turbines.

Her study, which she finished during her undergraduate years as part of her Schreyer Honors College thesis, was featured in Wind Energy Science.

Through identifying optimal airflow parameters to enhance electricity generation, Tyagi’s research could revolutionize the trajectory of wind energy technology.

Tyagi's mentor Sven Schmitz lauded her graceful approach and highlighted that her research could influence the future design of wind turbines across the globe.

He emphasized the significance of her work in boosting wind energy production and cutting expenses. As an acknowledgment of this accomplishment, Tyagi was awarded the prestigious Anthony E. Wolk Prize for the top aerospace engineering thesis.
