 An international team of researchers used JWST to observe an ancient galaxy that emitted light just 330 million years after the Big Bang,

 , somehow managed to shine even though its light should have been completely absorbed by the dense fog.


 JADES is one of the most distant galaxies in the known universe. Its light had to travel nearly 13.5 billion light-years to reach JWST, which also means that this galaxy is almost as ancient as the universe itself.


 The farther out in space astronomers look using telescopes like JWST, the further back in time they're seeing, almost all the way to the Big Bang.


 What's more,
 JWST detected a Lyman-alpha emission
 from JADES, which is a specific, distinctly bright wavelength of light that is very easily absorbed by neutral hydrogen.


 The fact that the telescope spotted this emission means that the fog immediately surrounding the galaxy must dissipated, according to the researchers.


 This suggests JADES was actively clearing the neutral hydrogen gas away.

 "We truly shouldn't have encountered a galaxy like this based on our current comprehension of how the universe has developed," stated Kevin Hainline, an astronomer from the University of Arizona and also a co-author, in the press release.
 


 
 "We might envision the early universe as being enveloped in a dense mist, making it extremely challenging to detect even strong beacons trying to shine through. However, what we observe here is the beam of light from this galaxy slicing through the haze," he explained.

 In this scenario, these stars might have warmed the nearby gas to over fifteen times the temperature of the Sun's surface, leading to extraordinarily intense radiation emissions.
 


 A different hypothesis suggests that the JADES galaxy hosts an active supermassive black hole, with radiation from matter plunging into this black hole causing the surrounding gas to become ionized.


 The research team discovered some supporting evidence for this concept. They found that the measurements indicating the size of JADES suggest it is remarkably small—a trait typical of galaxies hosting black holes.


 Despite the manner in which the light from this distant ancient galaxy pierced through the obscurity of the early universe, obtaining these images provides insight into potentially the initial glow emitted by the earliest stars in our universe, according to the scientists.

 Apa Itu Teknologi Quina?

 Teknologi Quina merujuk pada suatu metode pembuatan peralatan batu yang telah diketahui melalui sejumlah penemuan arkeologis di Benua Eropa, khususnya dalam konteks komunitas Neanderthal. Karakteristik utamanya ialah pisau pengeruk (scraper) yang cukup tebal, kurang proporsional, bersudut tajam, dan sepertinya selalu direnovasi ulang. Peralatan semacam itu umumnya dipergunakan untuk memproses material-material seperti tulang, rambut randu, ataupun kayu.


 Hingga saat ini, teknologi Quina belum diketahui ada di luar benua Eropa. Karena alasan tersebut, kemunculan sistem Quina dalam bentuk lengkap di lokasi Longtan merupakan temuan yang amat menakjubkan dan tanpa parallel di wilayah Asia Tenggara.

 Tantangan Terhadap Pandangan Lama
</h3>

 Sejak lama, para ilmuwan memandang Zaman Batu Lumer tengah di Asia Timur -- jeda waktu sekitar 300.000 sampai 40.000 tahun yang lampau -- sebagai era dengan kemajuan budaya dan teknologi yang terbilang perlahan. Di sisi lain, Afrika dan Eropa melihat periode tersebut sebagai fase penting bagi evolusi manusia modern serta bermacam-macam populasi prasejarah termasuk Neanderthal dan Denisovan.


 Namun, temuan studi terbaru dari University of Washington, yang dipublikasikan di jurnal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences tanggal 31 Maret, saat ini mengejutkan pandangan lama itu.


 Penemuannya sungguh mengejutkan pandangan kami terhadap daerah itu pada waktu itu," ujar Ben Marwick, seorang arkeolog dan guru besar dari Universitas Washington yang juga merupakan salah satu kontributor dalam riset ini. "Hal ini mendorong pertanyaan baru: Apa saja hal lain yang masih tertinggal untuk ditemukan? Bagaimana penemuan ini dapat merombak pemahaman kita tentang keberadaan manusia serta perkembangannya di kawasan ini?

 Salah satu pertanyaan penting yang timbul dari hasil penelitian tersebut adalah: mengapa teknologi khas Eropa dapat berkembang di China?


 Para ilmuwan saat ini mencoba memastikan apakah hal ini merupakan akibat perpindahan penduduk dari Eropa menuju Asia yang secara bertahap membawa teknologi tersebut, ataukah ini adalah bukti kreasi independen—yang mana grup manusia di Cina mungkin telah menyempurnakan teknologi sejenis tanpa adanya interaksi langsung dengan Eropa.


 "Kami berharap mengetahui apabila teknologi ini berkembang dari metode lokal yang telah ada sebelumnya, ataukah tiba-tiba hadir tanpa adanya prekursor. Bila tak ditemukan bukti peralihan, bisa dipastikan hal tersebut memiliki asal-usul eksternal," terangkan Marwick.


 Inovasi ini pun menggambarkan perkembangan dalam metodologi riset arkeologi di Cina. Sebagaimana dikatakan oleh Marwich, salah satu faktor yang membuat teknologi Quina akhirnya ditemukan saat ini ialah karena para ahli arkeologi di Cina kian banyak mengekspos dirinya kepada publikasi serta teknik studi dari negara lain. Di samping itu, laju dan frekuensi penyelidikan arkeologi di Negeri Tirai Bambu tersebut turut melonjak naik.


 Dia menyebutkan bahwa anggapan lama yang mengasumsikan sedikit sekali perubahan budaya di Asia Timur dalam ribuan tahun akhirnya mulai diragukan. "Anggapan tersebut sudah cukup mapan, sehingga para peneliti cenderung tidak mencari bukti yang dapat membantahnya," jelas Marwick. "Namun saat ini, semakin banyak ilmiah yang berani untuk merombak pemikiran tersebut."


 Marwick juga mengakui bahwa banyak aspek dari arkeologi bergantung pada nasib baik. Akan tetapi, tahap krusial selanjutnya ialah mencari jejak-jejak orang-orang yang tinggal pada periode bersamaan dengan peralatan Quina di Longtan.


 “Hal itu dapat membantu menjawab pertanyaan besar: Apakah perkakas tersebut diciptakan oleh manusia modern layaknya kita, ataukah oleh spesies Homo Sapiens prasejarah lain?" katanya. "Sebelumnya, kami tidak pernah menggali fosil Neanderthal di kawasan Asia Tenggara. Tetapi jangan tertutup kemungkinan untuk menemui jejak Denisovan, atau bahkan spesies Homo Sapiens asli yang masih menjadi teka-teki bagi para peneliti."


 Dengan temuan ini, para ilmuwan saat ini menghadapi potensi bahwa sejarah umat manusia di Asia Tenggara ternyata jauh lebih beragam dan rumit dari apa yang telah dipikirkan sebelumnya.  - Setiap peserta UTBK SNBT 2025 untuk ujian tertulis berbasis komputer akan mendapatkan kisi-kisi pertanyaan yang unik.


 Menurut Koordinator Call Center, Helpdesk, dan Frontdesk SNPMB (Seleksi Nasional Penerimaan Mahasiswa Baru) 2025 Badru Zaman, pertanyaan UTBK SNBT akan disusun secara acak dan setiap individu serta setiap sesi pengerjaannya akan memiliki perbedaan.


 "Oleh karena itu tidak serupa. Soal-soal juga beragam, setiap sesinya unik, dan bahkan setiap harinyapun berbeda," ujar Badru dalam kutipan dari akun YouTube SNPMB, Rabu (2/4/2025).


 Badru menyebutkan bahwa pada akhirnya seluruh peserta akan dimintai untuk menerangkan ketujuh bagian tes bahan dalam UTBK SNBT 2025 yang telah diberondong.

 The research, released on Wednesday, revealed that the rig shark — which is also called the spotted estuary smoothhound — generates clicking noises when it is handled, as stated in the study.


 "Sharks might be more vocal than previously believed," said Carolin Nieder, a marine biologist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the principal investigator of the study, during an interview with ABC News.

 Nieder mentioned that the sounds were found "by chance" while she was engaged in another research project examining the auditory abilities of sharks during her doctoral studies at the University of Auckland in New Zealand.


 She mentioned that she had never thought about her studied sharks producing any kind of noise. She believed that sharks were quiet creatures and would not emit intentional sounds.


 Nieder snagged seven rag sharks in New Zealand’s Kaipara Harbour, acquired an additional three from a nearby commercial fisher, and kept them all at a marine lab in “circulating-flow tanks,” according to the report.

 Following a period of adaptation lasting at least seven days, the sharks were moved from their holding tank to an experimental tank for the handling procedures as mentioned in the study.


 While being handled, the rigs were "noticed to inadvertently generate clicking noises beneath the water."


 Typically, the sharks generated "nine clicks during handling underwater" within a span of 20 seconds, according to the study, with a notably higher number of clicks occurring particularly in the initial 10-second period.

 According to the study, the total click duration lasted merely 48 milliseconds.


 Seventy percent of the clicks happened during "calm swaying," twenty-five percent were associated with "vigorous bending of the head and body from side to side," and five percent took place without noticeable bodily movements, according to the study.


 The initial handling sets off a stress-induced startled reaction, causing an increase in clicking behavior. However, as the sharks grow more familiar with being handled, this behavioral response tends to decrease, which explains why the number of clicks declines gradually over time, according to the study.

FURTHER: American swimmer Ali Truwit secured a silver medal at the Paralympics just one year following her leg amputation due to a shark attack.

 Nieder mentioned that the rig is a smaller species of shark and is susceptible to being preyed upon. He suggested that perhaps when such a small shark faces an attack, these clicks might confuse the predator momentarily, allowing the shark a chance to flee.


 Nieder informed ABC News that the rig shark can generate this clicking noise because of its flattened teeth, which are different from those found in other types of sharks.


 Neil Hammerschlag, the president of Atlantic Shark Expeditions—who wasn’t involved in this research—mentioned that he has “often believed these creatures must possess a method for communicating via sounds.”


 "The notion that certain sharks produce sounds is thrilling to me since it implies they might utilize this as a means of communication. It paves the way for further investigation," Hammerschlag stated to ABC News.


 Nieder aims for this preliminary finding to encourage further investigation into shark-related studies, hoping that more individuals will become "interested in questioning prevailing ideas and continue paying attention to other creatures and life forms considered uncommunicative."

 is poised to do something no ground-based observatory has done before: detect potential signs of life on a planet orbiting the closest star to the Sun—
 
 Proxima Centauri
 
 —in under half a day. A new simulation study outlines how, thanks to its massive light-gathering power and unprecedented resolution, the ELT may be able to distinguish between living and lifeless planets based solely on the reflected light from their atmospheres.


 This breakthrough possibility is detailed in a 2025 study by
 
 Miles H. Currie
 
 and
 
 Victoria S. Meadows
 
 , which models the telescope’s ability to extract molecular fingerprints from exoplanets that don’t even transit their host stars. Their preprint,

 , suggests the answer to one of astronomy’s most enduring questions—

 —might be just a few years away.

 The next leap in Earth-based astronomy
</h2>

 Set high in the
 
 Chilean Atacama Desert, the ELT
 
 is scheduled to begin operations in 2028. With a primary mirror spanning 39 meters, it will be the largest optical/infrared telescope ever built on Earth. Its enormous surface area will allow it to collect more light than any previous ground-based telescope—and produce images up to 16 times sharper than Hubble.


 While other telescopes like
 
 JWST
 
 have made progress in analyzing exoplanet atmospheres during planetary transits, they face limitations. Most notably, many exoplanets—including some of the most promising Earth-like ones—
 
 do not transit
 
 from our line of sight. That’s where the ELT changes the game.


 Instead of waiting for a planet to pass in front of its star, the ELT will be able to capture
 
 reflected starlight
 
 directly from exoplanetary atmospheres. Using advanced high-contrast imaging and
 
 spectroscopy
 
 , it can isolate molecular signatures such as
 
 oxygen
 
 ,
 
 carbon dioxide
 
 , and
 
 water vapor
 
 —markers that could hint at biological activity.

 Simulating the search for life
</h2>

 To evaluate the ELT’s potential, Currie and Meadows created detailed simulations of four Earth-like worlds orbiting nearby
 
 red dwarf stars
 
 :


 ・A lush, non-industrial Earth, rich in water and plant life


 ・An ancient Archean Earth, with primitive life and minimal oxygen


 ・A desiccated, oceanless world, more like Venus or Mars


 ・A barren, prebiotic Earth, with the chemistry for life but no organisms


 The researchers also modeled Neptune-sized
 exoplanets
 for contrast, expecting their thick atmospheres to yield different spectral patterns.


 Their goal: determine whether the ELT could reliably distinguish between living and lifeless planets, while avoiding false positives or false negatives. Could a planet without life appear to be thriving—or worse, could a truly habitable world be mistaken for a dead one?


 Their conclusion was clear: with only ten hours of observation, the ELT could likely identify atmospheric biosignatures on an Earth-like planet around Proxima Centauri. For gas giants, meaningful spectra could be obtained in just an hour.

 Proxima Centauri: the prime target
</h2>

 Orbiting just 4.24 light-years away,
 
 Proxima Centauri
 
 is home to at least two known exoplanets—Proxima b and Proxima d. While the exact habitability of Proxima b is still debated, its location within the star’s habitable zone and relative proximity to Earth make it a prime candidate for future observations.


 If even a
 
 thin atmosphere
 
 exists around Proxima b, the ELT might be able to detect it. And if that atmosphere contains molecules associated with biology, the implications would be staggering.


 With the telescope’s capabilities, astronomers won’t need to rely solely on rare planetary alignments or indirect detection. They’ll be able to observe exoplanets directly, opening the door to a more continuous and detailed survey of nearby planetary systems.

 Beyond detection: preventing misinterpretation
</h2>

 Importantly, the study also highlights the risk of spectral ambiguity. Not every detection of oxygen or methane should be taken as a smoking gun for life. Natural, abiotic processes can mimic the chemical output of organisms.

 and sensitivity are so critical. By combining multiple spectral features and high-resolution data, researchers hope to develop stronger biosignature frameworks, reducing the likelihood of mistaken conclusions.

 Malanga is a UFO enthusiast who has been featured in various YouTube programs about extraterrestrial life. He has shared insights from his over ten-year journey investigating Unidentified Flying Object occurrences across Italy.


 On the contrary, Biondi focuses on radar technology.


 And Mei works as a researcher specializing in pre-dynastic Egyptian history.


 In October 2022, Malanga and Biondi released an independent peer-reviewed article in the scientific journal Remote Sensing. The study revealed concealed chambers and inclined passageways within Khafre, as well as indications of a heat signature close to the structure's foundation.

 Studi yang dijalankan oleh para peneliti dari Universitas Stanford pada tahun kemarin mengamati sejumlah modifikasi kimia berkaitan dengan proses penuaan dalam spesimen darah yang didapat dari 108 individu dewasa dengan usia mencapai antara 25 hingga 75 tahun.


 Dengan mengamati contoh dari beberapa individu dengan umur yang bervariasi, diketahui bahwa fenomena penuaan berkembang pesat di kisaran usia 44 tahun, lalu terulang lagi pada masa 60 tahun.

 Dr. Chris McKnight from County Antrim has been studying why seals can remain submerged without breathing for extended periods compared to numerous other animal species as part of his research at the University of St Andrews in Scotland.


 He discovered that, apart from effectively storing oxygen, they possess a distinctive capability to mentally gauge the levels in their bloodstream to prevent drowning.


 "It's tremendously exciting to discover such a crucial element of marine mammal evolution, which plays a vital role in much of their activity—diving," stated Dr. McKnight.

 "Discovering such a crucial element of marine mammal evolution, which plays a vital role in much of their activity—diving—is immensely thrilling," stated Dr. McKnight.


 It feels as though it was hiding right beneath our noses all along.


 "It may appear straightforward and logical that seals can detect oxygen levels, which aids them in making choices to avoid running out of air and drowning; however, from an evolutionary perspective, this places both the species and their bodily functions among the most distinctively adapted creatures," he explained.

 To determine this, six young seals were observed at the university's Sea Mammal Research Unit over nearly a year, examining how they modified their behavior based on varying levels of oxygen availability.


 Seals such as Trish and Oisin voluntarily dove into the unit's pool to catch fish while under observation.

Engineers and astronomers at the University of Utah have designed a unique new kind of telescope lens: a flat lens with microscopic etchings to refract light. If the concept can be scaled up, these lenses could one day replace the heavier, bulkier lenses and mirrors typically used in telescopes, particularly those of professional observatories on the ground and in . Down the line, they could also be implemented on amateur telescopes, the team says.


 "Our computational techniques suggested we could design multi-level diffractive flat lenses with large apertures that could focus light across the visible spectrum," Rajesh Menon, a Utah professor of engineering, said in a
 statement
 .


 There are two basic types of telescope: refractors and reflectors. A refractor uses lenses to refract light and bring it to a focus. Reflectors utilize at least two mirrors to reflect the light to a focal point. Because large lenses are heavy and expensive to make, larger telescopes tend to use mirrors (sometimes in combination with smaller lenses). Lenses can also suffer from a malaise known as chromatic aberration, in which different wavelengths of light are refracted to slightly different degrees so that different colors come to focus at different points, resulting in color fringing around objects. Optical technicians can alleviate this through the complex use of glass coatings and multiple lenses — though that adds cost and expense.

 However, the days of bulky, expensive telescope lenses could soon be coming to an end thanks to the team's new flat lens measuring less than a millimeter thick. that has been developed by a team led by Apratim Majumder, who is a member of Menon's lab at Utah.


 "Our demonstration is a stepping stone towards creating very large aperture, lightweight flat lenses with the capability of capturing full-color images for use in air- and based telescopes,” Apratim Majumder, a member of Menon's lab at Utah and leader of the crew behind the new lens prototype, said in the statement.


 Majumder, Menon and their team designed a 100mm (4-inch) flat lens, where microscopic concentric rings are etched onto a glass substrate using a technique called "grayscale optical lithography," which is a variation of a method typically used for etching electronics onto a silicon wafer. Most of the half-millimeter thickness of the flat lens is the glass — the ringed grooves are just 2.4 microns deep.

 The use of concentric rings on a flat lens isn't new — a precursor, called a Fresnel zone plate, tries to do the same trick but is unable to eradicate chromatic aberration. However, the Utah team's multilevel diffractive lens (MDL) is able to bring all the wavelengths of light for which it was designed to detect (400–800 nanometers, covering the range of visible light and into the near-infrared) to a focus at the same point, thanks to how the size of the rings and the spacing between affect how the incoming light is refracted. Because all the colors come to focus at the same point, there is no chromatic aberration.


 Back when the telescope was
 invented by Hans Lippershey
 in 1608, it was done so by experimenting with putting lenses together. Today, a telescope's optical design involves complex computer modelling and large amounts of data.

 "Simulating the performance of these lenses over a very large bandwidth, from visible to near-infrared, involved solving complex computational problems involving very large datasets," said Majumder. "Once we optimized the design of the lens’ microstructures, the manufacturing process involved required very stringent process control and environmental stability."


 The resulting 100mm lens, which has a focal length of 200mm, was then tested on both the
 sun
 and the
 moon
 , successfully showing
 sunspots
 and (in an artificially color-enhanced image) accurate geological features on the lunar surface. The 100mm MDL weighs just 25 grams (0.88 oz), compared to the 211 grams (7.44 oz) of a similarly sized, commercially available 100mm lens that is 17mm thick at its curved center.


 The
 Hubble Telescope
 uses a 2.4-meter primary mirror with a total mass of 1,825 pounds (828 kilograms), and the
 James Webb Telescope
 incorporates 18 segments in its primary 21-foot (6.5-meter) mirror in total weighing (on Earth) 1,555 pounds (705 kilograms). On
 Earth
 , individual telescope mirrors have an upper size limit of 26-33 feet (8–10 meters), beyond which gravity starts to cause them to sag. The development of a flat, lightweight lens could therefore transform telescopes, particularly for launches where mass is a key limiting factor for getting off the Earth.
