Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has stated his intention to sign "one or two players" this summer with the aim of making significant improvements for the club following their disappointing Premier League season.

Manchester United had a disappointing beginning to the season, resulting in the dismissal of Erik ten Hag. In his place, Amorim was appointed; however, the team's performance has continued to struggle, leaving them mired in the lower portion of the Premier League standings.

The ex-manager of Sporting CP favours a strict tactical approach that brought him success in Portugal. Since taking over at the club, he has signed players like Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven. Additionally, United were keen on bringing Geovany Quenda from Sporting CP this summer; however, their efforts were thwarted when Premier League competitors Chelsea secured his transfer for 2026.

Manchester United submit offer for Alejandro Balde

As reported in Spain by Fichajes Manchester United has submitted a £42 million bid for Barcelona’s defender Alejandro Balde, though this proposal has been promptly declined by the Spanish club. At just 21 years old, Balde holds significant importance for Barcelona, where he is considered vital to the team’s future plans. Given their current fiscal challenges, Barça would only consider letting him go for an "outlandish sum."

The young player, aged 21, has participated in 40 matches across various competitions for Barcelona, netting one goal and contributing with eight assists as the club pursues both the La Liga championship and the Champions League trophy. Following their unsuccessful offer for the athlete, reports suggest that Manchester United may pivot towards exploring alternative prospects within the transfer window to strengthen manager Amorim’s squad before the upcoming season begins.

Manchester United won’t have substantial funds available this summer, and their transfer activity will hinge on both player departures and whether they secure a spot in the Champions League. Without European football, attracting premier talents might prove challenging for them.

Amorim discusses potential new acquisitions

Discussing the summer transfer period, Amorim commented before the Manchester derby: "My only aim is to concentrate on our strong points and utilise our club to attract one or two top talents. We're taking every step necessary to significantly improve for the upcoming season. Whether it takes four years to win the Premier League, I'm not sure. However, we must make substantial progress next year."

A new striker is a priority for United, after difficult campaigns in front of goal for both Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund. The likes of Liam Delap, Victor Osimhen and Viktor Gyökeres have all been named as targets but none of them will come cheaply. United will hope to raise some quick funds by sanctioning permanent exits for some of their loan players with Marcus Rashford and Antony both tipped for £40m summer moves while Chelsea have already agreed to pay around £25m to sign Jadon Sancho - although they do have the option to back out of that agreement by paying a £5m penalty.
