The inauguration of the first-ever Niger Delta Sports Festival took place with great pomp and grandeur at the Uyo Township Stadium on Wednesday. It showcased the stunning beauty, captivating charm, and rich tapestry of cultural variety from the Niger Delta region during an enthralling event attended by President Bola Tinubu. The atmosphere exuded exceptional elegance and brilliance throughout the celebration.
The President was represented by the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, who urged the athletes to mirror the splendor of the festival’s opening ceremony with their performances during the real competitions.
The highly anticipated Opening Ceremony brought together individuals from various backgrounds and professions, meeting high expectations as it welcomed esteemed officials and received enthusiastic support from both live audience members in the stadium and viewers watching worldwide on television.
The attendees included the Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, a representative of the Delta State Governor, Senator Emmanuel Agwarivo, sports commissioners from all nine states, members of the National Assembly, and high-ranking officials from the Niger Delta Development Commission under the leadership of their Managing Director, Dr Samuel Ogbuku.
The main attraction of the event focused on the optimal method to initiate what is anticipated to be a highly competitive sports competition, aiming to create a enduring impact beyond just the host state of Akwa Ibom, extending to the broader Niger Delta region and all of Nigeria.
Under the leadership of Akwa Ibom State’s Executive Governor, Pastor Umo Bassey Eno, over 10,000 individuals braved several hours of heavy rain to gather at the revitalized sports complex located in the rapidly developing city of Uyo. This venue is increasingly becoming a focal point for athletic events within Nigeria.
Together, they chanted lyrics and moved rhythmically in the downpour, marking the start of an event destined to spark conversations about the upcoming monarchs of sports across the continent. This was particularly significant for the Niger Delta region, which proudly claims to be the cradle of many outstanding African athletes who have left their mark on the sport world.
Pastor Eno’s commitment to this cause was evident on the night showing everyone why his administration gracefully accepted the hosting rights to stage the Festival, stressing that this was just one of his administration’s conscious efforts at promoting sports and giving youths a chance to make a name for themselves and the nation.
The festival torch was ignited by Olympian Enefiok Udo-Obong and received support from Festival Ambassadors such as Victor Ikpeba, Seun Ogunkoya, Paralympian Patience Igbiti, and Tamunosiki Atorudibo.
The Afrobeat sensation Phyno concluded the evening with an engaging performance featuring some of his popular tracks, prompting the athletes to cheer, chant, and dance along enthusiastically.
