Rediscovering the Heady Charm of Ho Chi Minh City: An International Edition

 As numerous times before, after arriving at Ho Chi Minh City's Tan Son Nhat International Airport, I walked out to a chaotic scene of joyous family reunions and taxi drivers touting for business.


 I was greeted with a blast of 32-Celsius-degree heat, prompting me to quickly shed layers meant for airplane temperatures and a cacophony of beeping horns from automobiles jockeying for position at pick-up points.

 My airport transfer turned up late, apparently delayed thanks to the notorious traffic, which I reacquainted myself with as we slowly inched our way to my Dong Khoi Street hotel. Invariably, my taxi got gridlocked by a sea of motorbikes, with riders glancing down at me with the most disarming of smiles.


 My first hour back in Vietnam and this is just what I expected – and missed. After reluctantly leaving during the Covid 'Delta variant' outbreak in mid-2021, after more than three years away, finally, I'm happy to be back in intoxicating, one-of-a-kind, Ho Chi Minh City, my former home.


 In the ensuing weeks ahead, I discovered, however, there are a considerable number of developments and changes I didn't expect, but in a pleasantly surprising way. Not only has Ho Chi Minh City bounced back to normal life post- pandemic but is, for the most part, positively thriving, with a feel-good factor and vibrant energy so strong, you could almost plug it in.


 
 A pulsating city on the move
 


 Shortly after checking in, I quickly find myself needing to become tech-savvy. This involves downloading crucial applications for booking rides and excursions, ordering food deliveries, and translating between Vietnamese and English—functions that appear integral to daily living here (a true blessing). At the same time, massive electronic billboards dominate the city center, constantly displaying ads featuring attractive young people endorsing products ranging from beer to smartphones.


 Although international visitors have come back, even during high season, I can't remember seeing so many before; nowadays, it’s become a ‘must-visit’.
 -
 head to 's destination. It’s challenging to find a seat before the long lines at trendy Western eateries, particularly those that have become social media sensations and places known for their banh mi. In downtown HCMC, I often feel like I might be knocked down by the throngs of tourists occupying the sidewalks. Each evening, these same crowds pack into the newly introduced open-top double-decker buses as they cruise through the city’s illuminated streets on guided tours (they look incredibly enjoyable; I’m almost enticed to join them myself).


 In downtown shopping centers, visitors can be seen carrying bags from various global brands, weighed down by their purchases. Their animated conversations echo through the bustling food courts upwards into the multilevel lobbies. The city currently has three such establishments.

 , I still love visiting my favorite neighborhood restaurants, tucked away in the more traditional districts, which are now bustling with customers once more. This includes the family-owned pho place and
 bun cha
 Places I often visited, like countless others, were compelled to close their doors during the later phases of the COVID-19 lockdowns.


 It was during those extraordinary ‘Delta variant’ months of 2021 when numerous downtown businesses stopped operating permanently, a sight that was disheartening. Recently, however, I've found that upscale new eateries, chic rooftop lounges, and trendy boutiques have emerged or revisited familiar spots at lower rents. Moreover, several longstanding significant initiatives have finally come to fruition: the cable-stayed
 Ba Son Bridge
 Notable for its uniquely backward-sloping, curved pylon, the highly anticipated Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien metro line opened in 2022. It began operating just days prior to my return in January.


 Generated with considerable enthusiasm (which I shared, traveling via metro to Thao Dien), TIME magazine quickly placed this among the
 "World's Greatest Places for 2025."

 Even Bach Dang Wharf has undergone a remarkable transformation, from a shabby, underutilized stretch in the center, to a bustling, shiny waterfront zone. Tourists, expats and locals now flock to the pier, not only for the riverside open-air cafés – hugely popular in the balmy evenings – but also, for the excellent new tourist-friendly boats that ply the Saigon River: a Bangkok-style, river taxi (Saigon Waterbus) and
 sightseeing cruise boats
 (Saigon Water Go), serenaded with live music.


 Ho Chi Minh City’s infamous traffic isn't the same – actually, I'd swear it's got worse. There appears to be far more cars clogging up the streets, plus crossing the road seems even more hazardous – if that's possible. Souvenir tee-shirts sold in tourist haunts like Ben Thanh Market and Saigon Square increasingly feature designs that poke fun at the Saigonese lack of respect for traffic lights.


 
 Reaching new heights
 


 From the city center to the outer suburbs, the number of high-rise buildings has ramped up. True, some remain half-built, but along with pretty much elsewhere in the city, even those skeletal towers come to life come nighttime, attractively illuminated with bright fluorescent hues; so too, the cluster of drab residential tower blocks along the riverbanks. The Indochina-era, Notre Dame Cathedral, undergoing long-term renovations and engulfed in scaffolding, is itself magically transformed post-dusk into a giant grotto of fairy lights.


 From the upper deck of a nighttime cruise along the Saigon River and my heavenly suite on the 38th floor of a downtown hotel (perched above an equally luxurious shopping center), I'm totally in awe of a glittering nighttime skyline that is starting to rival Hong Kong or Bangkok. The stars of this dazzling show are undoubtedly those well-established architectural masterpieces: the 68-storey Bitexco Financial Tower and Landmark 81, Southeast Asia's second tallest building.


 Arriving here for the first time in 1998 (when I used to hail a taxi on the street, message home from Internet cafés and did the "airport run" in 15 minutes), over the years, I've witnessed first-hand Vietnam's largest and most cosmopolitan metropolis develop and reinvent itself on the global stage and flourish in stature. But it's
 especially
 pronounced on this visit.


 Despite everything evolving over time, some constants remain. Ho Chi Minh City retains its timeless allure—remaining irresistibly captivating, vibrantly energetic, and charmingly eccentric. As I slowly make my way back to the airport, parting ways becomes unexpectedly difficult.

 The cost of flights from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City has risen by approximately 15% since last year, and numerous hotels are completely reserved due to an influx of tourists planning to visit the city for the approaching April 30 celebration.


 Thanh Luân, who hails from Hanoi but works in Ho Chi Minh City, mentioned that he intended to bring his extended family of ten people down from the northern region for the five-day celebration marking both Vietnam’s Reunification Day and Labor Day. The festivities run from April 30 through Sunday, May 5, and Thanh Luân was looking forward to witnessing a spectacular military procession along with various nationwide events commemorating half a century since the nation's unification.


 Luán attempted to reserve hotel rooms for early April but found it challenging to locate available options. He mentioned that places offering lower rates usually didn’t align with his standards of comfort and cleanliness, whereas more upscale lodgings within his budget range were all taken.

 “Securing a room is tough enough, but obtaining air tickets proves to be twice as challenging, with prices being extremely steep,” Luan commented.


 A survey conducted
 
 by
 VnExpress
 
 suggested that numerous travelers began their trip planning at the start of this year, with the busiest travel days stretching from April 27, which is the Sunday preceding the holiday, through May 4. During this timeframe, airfare prices have risen significantly in comparison to earlier weeks.


 By April 2nd, return tickets from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City were priced anywhere from roughly VND4.7 million (USD$200) for overnight journeys up to VND6.5 million for peak evening flights over the holidays. During normal days in April, these prices usually fluctuate within the range of VND4-4.5 million.


 Data from the Vietnamese travel agency Best Price indicates that airfares reached their peak on April 28 because of increased demand. Year-over-year, ticket costs for flights between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City have risen approximately 10-15%.


 A Best Price spokesperson noted that with fewer available flights and higher demand, ticket prices have increased.


 Agencies in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City have observed that travelers predominantly favor departures on the evening of April 26 or the morning of April 27. Some flights operated by Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet are almost entirely reserved at these times. Since early March, airlines have seen a significant increase in bookings during this period.


 Nonetheless, certain travelers who made reservations prior to March found themselves paying fares comparable to today’s rates. Minh Duc, from Hanoi, secured his flight tickets 45 days ahead to join the parade. Despite these tickets costing him VND4.3 million—which was akin to prevailing prices at present—he felt content with having locked down an earlier reservation for greater assurance and improved travel arrangements.

 Hotel rooms in HCMC are also filling up quickly.


 VnExpress
 's April 2 survey of online booking platforms like Booking and Traveloka showed limited availability in central districts such as District 1, District 3, and Phu Nhuan for stays between April 27 and May 4. Many downtown homestays are also fully booked.


 Thi Quoc Duy, Director of the Independent Travel Center at BenThanh Tourist, said one of BenThanh Group’s five hotels is already fully booked, and the remaining properties are expected to reach full occupancy about two weeks before the holiday.


 A representative from the 4-star Kim Do Royal Hotel Saigon said their 127 rooms, priced from VND2.3 million per night, were fully booked a month ago. Similarly, Tan Son Nhat Hotel in Phu Nhuan District reported being fully booked from April 15 to May 20. Hotel representatives noted that most reservations were made in mid-March by tour groups and individual guests booking via online platforms.


 Nguyen Tran Phuong Uyen, a hotel sales consultant with over 10 years of experience, observed that before the pandemic, travelers typically preferred vacationing away from urban areas. However, an increasing number of people, especially younger travelers, now choose city breaks. The many planned events for the April 30 holiday have significantly driven up demand for accommodation in HCMC.

Why Foreign Entrepreneurs Are Betting Big on Vietnam for Their Startups

 The British entrepreneur Graeme didn’t anticipate that his 2023 visit to Vietnam would present him with a business prospect compelling enough to make him decide to remain there.


 A former footballer who retired at 21 due to injury, he had initially planned to launch a retail business in Bali, Indonesia. But friends discouraged him, citing the market's competitiveness.


 While visiting Vietnam in 2023, he identified its promise as a perfect location both for residence and professional endeavors. Given its substantial populace of 100 million, with three-quarters below the age of 30, along with its extensive coastlines fostering commerce, the nation seemed poised for expansion.


 "The expenses for living and starting up are notably low," states the 37-year-old.


 He first opened a café and an Airbnb business. Then, by chance, he noticed a demand for post-injury sports rehabilitation, an industry largely untapped in Vietnam. Recalling his own recovery process, he saw an opportunity to introduce sports rehabilitation technology to the country.


 He partnered with Jordan, a friend with a degree in sports science, to launch a new venture. By mid-2024, they had imported equipment from the U.K. and U.S. and opened Recover, a sports rehabilitation center catering to amateur athletes, in HCMC. Vietnam’s significantly lower business registration and labor costs and operational expenses gave them a competitive advantage over markets like the U.K. and Australia, he says.

 But he encountered cultural business challenges, particularly in staffing. He found that Vietnamese employees were often reserved when working with foreigners. Many arrived late for work, delaying the center’s opening, something unacceptable in the service industry. Tortuous banking procedures made payments and financial tracking challenging.


 A few months later he expanded his team, hiring Myanmarese staff and receiving legal guidance from his Vietnamese wife.


 "Without local connections, running a business here would be very difficult," he says. "Language barriers and different business cultures are major challenges."


 After six months Recover stabilized, and he began planning an expansion into Hong Kong.


 Graeme is one of many foreign entrepreneurs choosing Vietnam, especially HCMC, as their startup base. According to StartupBlink, a global startup ranking platform, as of 2024 HCMC had 182 foreign-owned startups, 52% of the country's total. Over three years the city jumped 68 places to 111th among the world’s top startup hubs.


 This growth is fueled by Vietnam’s improving business climate. The 2020 World Bank Doing Business report ranked Vietnam 70th out of 190 countries for business-friendliness. Key reforms like streamlining business registration and reducing processing time to under a month have further facilitated foreign investment.


 Vinnie Lauria, founder of venture capital firm Golden Gate Ventures, which backs startups in Southeast Asia, says Vietnam’s startup ecosystem has flourished over the past decade. The country has
 attracted foreign entrepreneurs
 in edtech, fintech, healthtech, and digital transformation.


 Vietnam’s economic growth, stable education system and young, ambitious workforce make it an attractive business destination, he says. The country’s vibrant street life, motorbike culture, and diverse cuisine further boost its appeal, he says.


 "Unlike any other Southeast Asian country, Vietnam has a unique energy—both chaotic and orderly in its own way."


 American entrepreneur Aric Austin experienced this firsthand when he visited his brother in 2018. A former media startup executive in New York, the U.S., he later founded and sold two companies to Glam Media and Yahoo in Germany.


 "I wanted to
 take on a new challenge in Vietnam
 ," he says.

 The idea emerged when he struggled to find a storage facility while relocating from Berlin to HCMC. His landlord had no recommendations, and he was surprised by the absence of personal storage services in Vietnam in stark contrast to neighboring Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Hong Kong, where the industry was already well-established.


 "I knew Vietnamese consumers would eventually demand this service," he says.


 After a year of research he launched My Storage, a personal storage business, in 2019. But the business required a lot of effort to build consumer awareness. One of his early customers told him they were relieved to find his service, as they previously had to rent a hotel room just to store furniture during a home renovation.


 "This showed that demand existed, but most people were unaware of available solutions," Austin says. "Changing consumer perceptions could take five, 10 or even 15 years."


 He noticed a significant distinction between Western and Vietnamese consumers: in the West, customers actively look for services, whereas in Vietnam, companies need to approach them directly.

 When My Storage initially launched, it stood alone as the sole enterprise of its type within Vietnam. However, now multiple rivals—some even from abroad—have joined the fray. Despite this increased competition, he maintains an optimistic stance, arguing that these new entrants will boost public recognition and assist consumers in understanding the advantages offered by individual storage solutions.


 Lauria emphasizes that successful startup ecosystems thrive on diversity. A Kauffman Foundation study found that over 50% of Silicon Valley’s billion-dollar companies were founded by immigrants, underscoring their role in driving innovation and economic growth.


 However, Lauria recognizes that international entrepreneurs continue to encounter obstacles in Vietnam. Although business registration has become more streamlined, scaling up operations remains complicated, particularly when it comes to adhering to legal requirements, recruiting staff, and managing remotely.


 He encourages Vietnam to embrace a more welcoming stance towards foreign entrepreneurs and investors, using Singapore as an exemplary model—astartup haven that draws talents from around the world.
 Visa regulations ought to be made more straightforward as well.
 To make it easier for companies to register, he states.


 Tackling these challenges will pave the way for startups and local talent to make full contributions to business achievements.

 Nhìn xuyên suốt lịch sử nhiếp ảnh thế giới, ông Xuân Khánh nói có những dự án nhiếp ảnh nổi tiếng ghi lại hiện trạng xã hội, những sự đổi thay của phong cảnh. Và từ đó, chúng cung cấp nguồn ảnh tư liệu quý giá giúp cho việc nghiên cứu, quy hoạch đô thị hoặc thay đổi, phát triển một lĩnh vực nào đó trong xã hội.


 Như ở Mỹ có dự án FSA (Farm Security Administration) tập hợp các nhiếp ảnh gia nổi tiếng thực hiện một hồ sơ hình ảnh đồ sộ về cuộc sống của người Mỹ từ năm 1935 đến 1944 để giúp chính phủ có thêm tư liệu, xây dựng những chính sách phù hợp nhằm chống lại tình trạng nghèo đói ở nông thôn trong thời kỳ ấy.


 Theo nhiếp ảnh gia Dương Minh Long, các "tay máy" vẫn nên theo đuổi chụp những khía cạnh bình thường, giản dị của cuộc sống Sài Gòn như: cảnh đi chợ, xếp hàng mua đồ trên đường phố hay sinh hoạt của người dân... Bởi theo thời gian chúng sẽ là nguồn tư liệu quý giá.

 Chia sẻ tại sự kiện, Bill Nguyễn cho rằng khó khăn và thách thức lớn nhất khi hai cha con anh thực hiện sách ảnh về thành phố này là việc chọn lọc nội dung, tìm kiếm đề tài sao cho phù hợp, cũng như những trở ngại về tài chính, thời gian.


 Anh Thanh Tùng kể niềm đam mê chụp ảnh cũng phải được cân bằng với cuộc sống gia đình, học tập, công việc. Có những ngày rong ruổi đi chụp và hai cha con anh cùng động viên nhau phải cố gắng theo đuổi và hoàn thành dự án nhiếp ảnh Saigon 365 này.

 Triển lãm Saigon 365 diễn ra tại Đường sách TP.HCM từ ngày 22-3 đến 28-3.
 
 
 Triển lãm trưng bày 50 bức ảnh streetlife về Sài Gòn, gồm 18 ảnh của tác giả Nguyễn Huỳnh Bách và 32 ảnh của tác giả Nguyễn Thanh Tùng.
 
 
 Bộ ảnh được chính hai tác giả xử lý hậu kỳ và in theo chuẩn fine art trên chất liệu canvas. Trưng bày triển lãm cũng được thiết kế thi công giá treo riêng, bày trí hình ảnh theo ý đồ tác giả mong muốn.

 Peringkat resmi terakhir yang dikeluarkan oleh FIFA telah dirilis pada tanggal 19 Desember 2024.


 Dari tanggal 19 Desember 2024 sampai 3 April 2025, Vietnam berhasil meraih pencapaian luar biasa.

 Hanya ada dua negara lain yang mencetak skor lebih tinggi dibandingkan Vietnam dalam jangka waktu tersebut, yaitu Bosnia & Herzegovina dengan 24,2 poin dan Meksiko dengan 19,5 poin.


 Tim The Golden Star Warrios justru menduduki peringkat empat yang melebihi tim nasional Argentina sebagai juara Piala Dunia 2022.


 Kenyataan bahwa Argentina kini berada di posisi teratas dalam daftar peringkat FIFA menyebabkan hasil mendapatkan poin mereka tidak sepenuhnya optimal.


 Dua negara ASEAN lainnya yang masuk ke dalam peringkat 20 tim terkemuka berdasarkan tambahan poin adalah Filipina dan Myanmar.


 Ke dua regu berhasil meraih kemenangan saat bertemu dalam laga pembuka Kualifikasi Piala Asia 2027.


 Pada saat yang sama, tim nasional sepak bola Indonesia hanya mampu meraih penambahan 9,42 poin saja sejak tanggal 19 Desember 2024 kemarin.


 Walaupun berhasil meraih penambahan 16,58 poin setelah mengalahkan Bahrain, kekalahannya dari Australia menyebabkan poin Indonesia berkurang sebesar 4,24.


 Sebelumnya, Indonesia menerima penalti berupa pengurangan skor senilai 2,91 setelah dikalahkan oleh Filipina dalam pertandingan fase grup ASEAN Cup 2024.
