As part of these measures, Australia faced a basic import tariff increase of 10%, equivalent to what we apply to goods coming into Australia from the U.S. However, China along with several Southeast Asian nations heavily dependent on American markets received even higher punitive tax rates in response.
 
 
 It appears that the beef sector may suffer the most in Australia. The United States is the top importer of Australian beef, with American buyers consuming $3 billion worth of high-quality products from them last year. Due to a trade embargo enacted in 2003 aimed at safeguarding the country’s livestock from the potential threat of bovine spongiform encephalopathy—commonly known as mad cow disease—Australia doesn’t import U.S. beef. This situation has been a point of contention for U.S. trade representatives for quite some time.
 
 
 The frenzy seen in the US might originate from other places — yet it still appears widespread.
 
 
 This week, lithium and energy stocks suffered the most significant losses, as an ongoing glut of lithium, concerns over tariffs, and OPEC increasing oil output wreaked havoc on these industries.
 
 
 Australia's leading hard rock lithium producer, Pilbara Minerals, lost over 25 percent of its market capitalization for the week as analysts expressed concerns about potential underestimations in their yearly production forecasts. This comes amidst ongoing negative sentiments towards lithium.
 
 
 The value of iron ore and lithium heavyweight Mineral Resources plummeted another 25% over the past week. The firm's stock price has fallen well beyond 80% from its peak levels recorded two years prior. This week brought additional challenges for both the corporation and its former billionaire leader, as their 'slightly profitable' lithium ventures edged closer to being merely sustainable. Moreover, founder Chris Ellison faced legal action from the company’s once-loyal investors through a class-action lawsuit.

 Following the announcement of securing a significant position as the primary cybersecurity collaborator for an extensive $920 million USD ($1474 million AUD) contract from the U.S. government, the firm's stock value skyrocketed. This deal involves prominent players such as Knexus Research, Babel Street, and Dun & Bradstreet.
 
 
 WhiteHawk states that they will serve as the exclusive cybersecurity solutions provider, offering AI-driven tools to handle cyber threats within federal supply chain operations over a decade-long agreement. This partnership has the potential to generate significant ongoing income for the small-cap firm with continuous issuance of task orders.
 
 
 The agreement is supported by a White House executive order from 2025 and aims to simplify governmental purchasing processes, which could create additional chances for WhiteHawk to thrive.
 
 
 Given the scale of the agreement and WhiteHawk’s crucial position within it, investors seemed quick to buy shares following the news release on Tuesday morning.

 WhiteHawk is providing its AI-driven solutions for managing cyber risks within the supply chain specifically for the U.S. government during an increasing worldwide focus on cybersecurity and tech advancements. The firm could secure numerous additional contracts due to being selected as a top-tier supplier for the U.S. government.
 
 
 
 OZR Resources Ltd (ASX: OZM)

 On Thursday morning, the rejection of the offer was concealed in an additional trading statement, where the firm’s stock price began the day without any change.
 
 
 The market swiftly caught on, causing Galan’s share price to surge almost 50% to reach as high as 16 cents per share, jumping from a market capitalization of $92 million the previous week to an intra-day peak of $134 million.

 Galan’s HMW and Candelas projects boast a substantial 9.5 million tonne lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE) resource with a high grade of 841 milligrams per liter (mg/L). The firm has progressed beyond half the journey toward achieving phase one production.
 
 
 The project lies approximately 100 kilometers south of Rio Tinto’s Rincon project, situated in Argentina’s notable Lithium Triangle. In 2022, when lithium prices were higher, this same area was purchased by the major mining company for slightly above $1 billion due to its substantial non-JORC 5.8 million tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE) resources. Notably, Galan’s Hombre Muerto salt flat boasts lithium concentrations twice as high as those found at the Rincon site, measuring around 420 mg/L.
 
 
 Galan’s choice to hold off on production for its affordable lithium venture appears perplexing; however, the leadership is determined to negotiate a favorable deal for their extensive initiative—possibly when lithium prices rise or after they quickly secure both a buyer agreement and funding.

The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative has partnered with Ax Gas to unveil a CNG auto conversion centre in the Lakowe area of Lekki, Lagos State.
 
 
 The CNG auto conversion centre was launched yesterday to commence the conversion of government-owned vehicles as well as commercial ones at no cost to the drivers.
 
 
 Our correspondent reports that the centre has the capacity to convert about seven vehicles in a day. It also has a liquefied petroleum gas plant to sell cooking gas to people around the area.
 
 
 The Chief Executive Officer of Ax Gas, Andre Bassey, said private car owners can also visit the centre to convert their vehicles at a very affordable cost, depending on the type of vehicle.
 
 
 He states that CNG still costs less than petrol, which currently retails at more than N900 per liter.
 
 
 "We're essentially here to inaugurate two facilities. The first one will convert gasoline vehicles to run on compressed natural gas. The second purpose is to launch our new 12.5 metric tonne liquefied petroleum gas plant, also known as a cooking gas facility," he stated during the event on Sunday.
 
 
 Regarding the connection between Ax Gas and the PCNGI, Bassey explained, "The role of the PCNGI is to create the necessary conditions when you decide to invest here; they offer you a license along with the required equipment. Thus, the equipment was supplied and authorized by the PCNGI so that you could introduce it into your facility to lower operational costs. We constructed the facility, while the PCNGI supplies the kits needed for conversions."
 
 
 “As long as you drive a government-owned vehicle, you can come in to convert your car. Commercial drivers will come through their unions to convert their vehicles for free. But if you are a private owner, there’s a little token you will pay because the idea of the PCNGI is to subsidise transportation so that once it’s freely converted for the commercial users, that way, they can reduce the cost of transport fares.
 
 
 “Petrol is N930 per litre. If you convert your vehicle, compared to the price of petrol, the CNG equivalent of a litre of petrol is about N350. So, you see that petrol is almost three times the price of compressed gas per litre. It’s way cheaper. Two of my cars have already been converted. If I have a way to pay less for fuel to move my car, why not? I would definitely take it up,” he posited.
 
 
 Bassey allayed fears of an explosion, saying the CNG cylinder cannot explode if not compromised.
 
 
 He noted that the few cases of explosion reported in Nigeria were a result of cutting corners, warning Nigerians to convert their vehicles in places accredited by the government.
 
 
 He said, “The CNG cylinder is very thick, way different from the cooking gas cylinder. When somebody now puts something of 250 bar pressure into the cooking gas that can only take 30 bar, your guesses are as good as mine. You know the next thing is that it will explode.
 
 
 “That’s why we have a learning centre. We keep educating people that they should go to a properly licensed conversion centre where they will have insurance, where the PCNGI has already licensed them to operate just like ours, so that they don’t have to have any of these kinds of issues.”
 
 
 On LPG, the CEO added that the price of cooking gas will become stable and low when more local producers supply it to the market.
 
 
 The Director-General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council, Mr Joseph Osanipin, appreciated Ax Gas’s leadership in advancing clean energy solutions for Nigeria’s automotive sector, stressing that the milestone aligns seamlessly with NADDC’s mission of promoting sustainable alternative fuels for a greener future.

 SEOUL (DIWIDA |) -Samsung Electronics said on Tuesday that co-CEO Han Jong-hee had died of a heart attack, leaving newly-appointed boss Jun Young-hyun solely in charge of the tech giant as it revamps its underperforming chip business and navigates trade uncertainties.

 Han, 63, became chief executive officer of South Korea's biggest company in 2022 and was also in charge of its consumer electronics and mobile devices division.


 Jun was appointed as Samsung's co-CEO just last week at its annual shareholders meeting following his promotion in 2024 to lead its semiconductor division, which has been lagging rivals like SK Hynix and TSMC in the global artificial intelligence chip market.


 Samsung said in a stock exchange filing that Jun would be the sole CEO of the company after Han's death.


 Samsung shares were down 0.5% in line with the broader South Korean market.


 The world's biggest memory chipmaker has been suffering from weak earnings and a sagging share price in recent quarters after falling behind rivals in advanced memory chips and contract chip manufacturing, which have enjoyed strong demand from AI projects. Samsung has also ceded its smartphone market crown to Apple.


 Han, who was also a board member, passed away at a hospital on Tuesday while being treated for cardiac arrest, a company spokesperson said. Samsung has not yet decided on a successor, the spokesperson added.


 The company has traditionally had a co-CEO structure that divides oversight of its consumer and chips divisions.


 Han joined Samsung nearly 40 years ago and built his career in its television business.


 "Han was the key figure behind making Samsung’s TV business influential on a global scale," said an analyst who declined to be identified due to the sensitivity of the subject. "With his sudden passing... there could have some long-term impact on its business strategy, particularly in areas like marketing."


 Han's absence could also potentially affect Samsung's efforts to improve the performance of its home appliance division at a time when it has to deal with uncertainties involving tariffs and escalating trade wars, the analyst said.


 DIFFICULT YEAR


 At the shareholder meeting Han chaired last week, he told investors that 2025 would be a difficult year and Samsung would flexibly respond to U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs with its global supply chain and manufacturing footprints.


 He and other executives were grilled by shareholders at the meeting after the company's failure to ride an AI boom made it one of the worst-performing tech stocks last year.


 In semiconductors, Samsung lags behind SK Hynix in so-called high bandwidth memory (HBM) chips that Nvidia and others rely on for AI graphic processing units.


 "First and foremost, I sincerely apologise for the recent stock performance not meeting your expectations. Over the past year, our company failed to adequately respond to the rapidly evolving AI semiconductor market," Han said.


 He was scheduled to attend Samsung's launch event for new home appliances on Wednesday.


 Sources have said Samsung is also seeking to expand its presence in the automotive electronics market to drive new growth.


 Samsung chairman Jay Y. Lee, who is in China this week to attend the China Development Forum, visited Xiaomi's car factory in Beijing and BYD's headquarters in Shenzhen, according to photos posted on Chinese social media app and local media reports.


 Samsung declined to comment on Lee's trip to China.


 Lee has been dogged by lawsuits and scandals for the past decade, after his father Lee Kun-hee had a heart attack in 2014. In February, he was cleared of charges in a case related to his succession of the family-owned conglomerate, but prosecutors appealed to the court decision.

 Completing a transaction involves considerable effort to secure all required approvals. Therefore, I am issuing an Executive Order to maintain TikTok’s operations for another 75 days.


 The widely used video-sharing application, boasting over 170 million users in America, now faces potential shutdown due to a new U.S. legislation enacted last year. This law mandates that TikTok must separate from its parent company, ByteDance of China, failing which it will be forced to close operations within the United States.


 Trump has insisted his administration is near a deal to find a buyer for TikTok and keep it from shutting down that would involve multiple investors, but has given few details.


 ByteDance confirmed ongoing discussions with the U.S. government to find a resolution but emphasized that several important issues still needed addressing.


 "A contract has not been signed," and anything agreed upon will require "approval according to Chinese law," the firm further stated.


 Driven by concerns over national safety and the belief in Washington that TikTok is under the control of the Chinese government, the prohibition came into force on January 19. This was just a day prior to Trump’s inaugural ceremony, and during this time, ByteDance did not make an effort to seek out potential buyers.


 TikTok briefly went offline in the United States and was removed from app stores, much to the disappointment of countless users.


 However, the GOP president swiftly declared a preliminary 75-day extension, which led to TikTok being reinstated for users. It then returned to both the Apple and Google app stores in February.


 The revised 75-day extension moves the due date to June 19.


 Trump has consistently minimized the threats facing TikTok, asserting his belief that a purchaser for the app’s operations in the U.S. will be found.


 On Friday, the president also stated that he plans to "keep cooperating sincerely with China." The Chinese government must approve this deal.

 "Meminjamkan pakaian bisa meningkatkan usia pakainya, yang pada gilirannya mendukung pola penggunaan jangka panjang," ungkap Frida Lind, seorang peneliti di Chalmers University of Technology Swedia, seperti dilansir.

 Yang dirilis pada Senin, 6 Januari kemarin, Frida bersama dengan dua peneliti lain mengamati sembilan perusahaan sewa pakaian di Swedia. Hanya sebagian kecil dari total perusahaan itu saja yang kini masih beroperasi; sisanya telah ditutup.


 Terdapat tiga model sewa pakaian yang digunakan oleh badan tersebut, yakni sewa berdasarkan keanggotaan, langganan bulanan, serta persewaan individu. Dalam sistem keanggotaannya, pelanggan melakukan registrasi dan dapat meminjam baju selama periode tertentu, mirip dengan cara mengambil buku dari sebuah perpustakaan.


 Bagi sistem langganan, pelanggan diharapkan melakukan pembayaran setiap bulan serta mendapatkan opsi pakaian yang bisa dipakai secara bergantian. Sementara itu, program individu dirancang khusus bagi para penyewa yang ingin meminjam satu jenis pakaian spesifik untuk keperluan tertentu, misalnya kostum berkendara jetski.


 Model bisnis ini, seperti yang ditunjukkan oleh riset itu, memerlukan periode cukup lama. Tahapannya meliputi pengiriman baju bekas, inspeksi item-item tersebut, proses pembersihannya, sampai akhirnya siap lagi dipinjamkan ke konsumen. Para peneliti menyatakan bahwa mayoritas sistem semacam ini perlu dukungan ekstra serta waktu signifikan supaya dapat tetap eksis dalam persaingan pasaran.


 "Perusahaan pun kesulitan karena biaya gudang dan logistiknya sangat tinggi," jelas Frida.


 Penelitian serupa menunjukkan bahwa sektor fashion merupakan kontributor utama terhadap pencemaran global. Misalnya, lebih dari 90 persen sampah pakaian di Swedia berkontribusi pada perubahan iklim secara merugikan. Akan tetapi, para peneliti belum menguji efek lingkungan dari tiap jenis bisnis dalam laporan tersebut.


 Hasil penelitian dari Chalmers University of Technology mengindikasikan bahwa 70% efek pada lingkungan karena pakaian timbul selama proses pembuatannya, sementara sisanya berkaitan erat dengan perilaku belanja para konsumen. Menurut Frida, sistem sewa pakaian bisa membantu meningkatkan durasi penggunaan setiap item pakaian tersebut jika dibandingkan dengan pakaian-pakaian yang jarang dipakai dan hanya dibiarkan begitu saja di dalam lemari. Di Amerika Serikat, tiap orang cenderung membuang kurang lebih 81 pon atau sekira 36,74 kilogram pakaian per tahun. Sementara itu, jumlah sampah pakaian di Uni Eropa mencapai kisaran 26 pon atau sekitar 11,79 kg per orang pertahun.


 
 Pasar Khusus yang Menjanjikan
 


 Peneliti-peneliti itu mengungkapkan bahwa tidak seluruh model bisnis sewa pakaian memiliki pengaruh negatif pada lingkungan. Beberapa perusahaan justru menargetkan segmen pasar yang lebih tertentu, misalnya untuk keperluan outdoor.


 "Mereka mengidentifikasi segmen pasar mereka dan menyadari adanya permintaan spesifik yang membuat konsumen rela membayar tiap kali mereka memerlukan jenis pakaian tersebut," jelas Frida.


 Perusahaan persewaan pakaian yang menjalin kerjasama dengan pembuat, perancang, serta penjual pakaian dapat merasakan keuntungan tambahan. Model bisnis sewa-menyewa ini tetap mampu menyesuaikan diri dengan perkembangan mode terkini.
