"The major Japanese cities tend to be brimming with South Koreans," commented Kang. "What I desired was a more tranquil setting where I could fully immerse myself in the local ambiance."


 In the previous year, approximately 29 million South Korean citizens embarked on international trips. Many of these travelers are now leaning towards exploring unfamiliar places that remain relatively undiscovered by mainstream tourism. In response to this trend, airlines have initiated flights to smaller, lesser-visited urban areas aimed at attracting such adventurous tourists. As competition among various air carriers intensifies, gaining an early foothold in emerging but potentially lucrative route markets has turned into a crucial strategy for success.


 Japanese smaller urban areas exemplify this pattern well. Data from the aviation sector reveals that out of 19 municipalities in Japan which experienced growth in air travel volume over the past year relative to pre-pandemic levels in 2019, as many as thirteen have populations below one million.


 In 2019, Miyako Island (Miyakojima), which is part of the Okinawa Prefecture, saw only six flights originating from South Korea, as reported by the Incheon International Airport Corporation on April 3rd. However, last year, this figure skyrocketed to 308 flights, marking over a fiftyfold growth. As for the first quarter of this year, between January and March, there were already 128 flights operating on this route.


 Likewise, Matsuyama, a city with approximately 510,000 inhabitants in Japan’s Shikoku region, experienced an increase in its flight numbers from 376 in 2019 to 1,074 in the previous year.


 Eastar Jet was the inaugural South Korean airline to launch services to Tokushima, a Japanese city home to around 250,000 people situated in eastern Shikoku. During the initial quarter of this year, the service saw 82 flights operate between them, achieving seat occupancies of 74% in January and peaking at 91% in February. "A majority of Koreans aren’t familiar with Tokushima," noted an Eastar representative. "However, the robust interest indicates that tourists are seeking out distinctive locations."


 According to data provided by Kyowon Tour, bookings for small Japanese cities made up 22.5% of total reservations destined for Japan during the first quarter of this year.


 This trend isn’t limited to Japan; smaller cities across Southeast and Central Asia are seeing increased interest as well. Starting in May, T'way Air plans to introduce a new service to Tashkent, which serves as the capital of Uzbekistan. Historically, travel to Uzbekistan has centered around popular destinations such as Samarkand and Bukhara due to their rich historical ties to the Silk Road. However, this new flight path targets tourists who wish to explore less conventional aspects of contemporary Uzbekistani culture.


 In April, Jin Air launched a new service to Zhengzhou, a significant inland metropolis in China. Back in October, Jeju Air initiated regular flights to Batam, an Indonesian island city located within the Riau Islands archipelago. While most South Koreans traveling to Indonesia typically go to Bali or Jakarta, Jeju Air believes there is promise in developing Batam as a tourist destination due to its underexplored appeal.

 A 46-year-old man from Jordan is alleged to have attempted opening the rear emergency exit during the flight on Saturday night.


 The risky suspected action raised instant concerns among both the crew and travelers, and the individual was guided back to a central seat within the aircraft.


 Nevertheless, the individual, who is 46 years old, reportedly tried again to open the middle emergency exit door.


 He was held back by staff members and travelers, with reports suggesting that one employee may have been attacked during the incident.


 
 The Australian Federal Police apprehended the individual after the aircraft touched down safely in Sydney.

This aircraft will transition seamlessly from the trans-Pacific routes to these new locations and return within the gap between those peak periods.
 
 
 United’s current transpacific routes from San Francisco and Los Angeles to Hong Kong have been scheduled so that they align seamlessly with connecting flights in either direction, ensuring maximum convenience for passengers.  Regarding why Bangkok, United notes that it’s the most visited city in Thailand, and its popularity has surged further due to the hit TV show “The White Lotus.”
 
 
 The seats for these upcoming flights will become available at a later time. It's worth noting that although Bangkok represents a fresh addition to United's route chart, the carrier most recently operated routes to Bangkok from Tokyo’s Narita International Airport (NRT) up until March 2014.
 
 
 During the 2010s, United allocated several wide-body planes specifically for operating brief intra-Asian hops—this was an inefficient and expensive arrangement considering these routes probably generate less revenue. However, this time around, United plans to manage the operations of the two new markets with just one airplane.

 Starting October 26th, United will introduce an additional "tag flight" route from Hong Kong to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
 
 
 This daily service will utilize a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner as well. As mentioned earlier, United plans to use an airplane arriving from either Los Angeles or San Francisco. The airline will subsequently dispatch this plane for approximately a six-hour round trip to Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN). Afterward, it will fly back to Hong Kong where it will be used for overnight flights returning to the U.S.
 
 
 Notably, United chose not to introduce these two new routes from Tokyo, despite recently introducing new services to Mongolia, Taiwan, and the Philippines.
 
 
 Quayle clarified that the selection of Hong Kong was primarily due to geographical factors rather than any other considerations.
 
 
 "We are focusing on linking everything in the most effective way possible. This approach works particularly well for locations such as Taiwan, Mongolia, and even Cebu, where using narrow-body planes from Tokyo Narita proves to be more efficient. These connections are carefully coordinated so that our flights heading to Newark, Houston, San Francisco, Denver, and Los Angeles can seamlessly depart from Narita," he explained.
 
 
 Quayle says that Ho Chi Minh City is a "dynamic and rapidly expanding location," and tickets for this new route will go on sale within the next few weeks.
 
 
 This essentially marks a service restart for United, since the carrier last operated flights between Hong Kong and Ho Chi Minh City back in October 2016, according to Cirium schedules.

 United is currently the biggest U.S. carrier serving Australia, and it will expand even further next year when it launches service to Adelaide.
 
 
 On December 11th, the airline will initiate its inaugural services from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Adelaide International Airport (ADL), offering three weekly flights. Previously, these journeys required at least two stops. It’s worth noting that no other carrier has historically offered direct flights from the U.S. to Adelaide, making it intriguing to observe how United’s service performs in this market.

 Aside from the new routes, United will introduce an additional daily flight from San Francisco to Manila, Philippines, starting October 25th.

 in October 2023 — and clearly, the service has been successful enough to add both daytime and nighttime flights. Better yet, the additional service will be operated by United's largest jet, the Boeing 777-300ER, which features 60 Polaris business-class pods, 24 Premium Plus recliners, 62 Economy Plus extra-legroom seats and 204 standard economy seats.

 In an era when airlines have been
 busy cutting unprofitable routes
 , it's refreshing to hear Quayle reaffirm that "we're not cutting anything. Everything [announced today] is growth."
 
 
 Certainly, the airline needs to demonstrate that it can populate these additional routes; however, the winter flights introduced earlier will all be making their return for yet another season.
 
 
 "We have been highly effective in managing our airline operations and ensuring profitability. Our primary goals are to generate returns for our shareholders and to facilitate global connections. We believe we excel at achieving these objectives simultaneously," stated Quayle.

 The cost of flights from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City has risen by approximately 15% since last year, and numerous hotels are completely reserved due to an influx of tourists planning to visit the city for the approaching April 30 celebration.


 Thanh Luân, who hails from Hanoi but works in Ho Chi Minh City, mentioned that he intended to bring his extended family of ten people down from the northern region for the five-day celebration marking both Vietnam’s Reunification Day and Labor Day. The festivities run from April 30 through Sunday, May 5, and Thanh Luân was looking forward to witnessing a spectacular military procession along with various nationwide events commemorating half a century since the nation's unification.


 Luán attempted to reserve hotel rooms for early April but found it challenging to locate available options. He mentioned that places offering lower rates usually didn’t align with his standards of comfort and cleanliness, whereas more upscale lodgings within his budget range were all taken.

 “Securing a room is tough enough, but obtaining air tickets proves to be twice as challenging, with prices being extremely steep,” Luan commented.


 A survey conducted

 suggested that numerous travelers began their trip planning at the start of this year, with the busiest travel days stretching from April 27, which is the Sunday preceding the holiday, through May 4. During this timeframe, airfare prices have risen significantly in comparison to earlier weeks.


 By April 2nd, return tickets from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City were priced anywhere from roughly VND4.7 million (USD$200) for overnight journeys up to VND6.5 million for peak evening flights over the holidays. During normal days in April, these prices usually fluctuate within the range of VND4-4.5 million.


 Data from the Vietnamese travel agency Best Price indicates that airfares reached their peak on April 28 because of increased demand. Year-over-year, ticket costs for flights between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City have risen approximately 10-15%.


 A Best Price spokesperson noted that with fewer available flights and higher demand, ticket prices have increased.


 Agencies in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City have observed that travelers predominantly favor departures on the evening of April 26 or the morning of April 27. Some flights operated by Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet are almost entirely reserved at these times. Since early March, airlines have seen a significant increase in bookings during this period.


 Nonetheless, certain travelers who made reservations prior to March found themselves paying fares comparable to today’s rates. Minh Duc, from Hanoi, secured his flight tickets 45 days ahead to join the parade. Despite these tickets costing him VND4.3 million—which was akin to prevailing prices at present—he felt content with having locked down an earlier reservation for greater assurance and improved travel arrangements.

 's April 2 survey of online booking platforms like Booking and Traveloka showed limited availability in central districts such as District 1, District 3, and Phu Nhuan for stays between April 27 and May 4. Many downtown homestays are also fully booked.


 Thi Quoc Duy, Director of the Independent Travel Center at BenThanh Tourist, said one of BenThanh Group’s five hotels is already fully booked, and the remaining properties are expected to reach full occupancy about two weeks before the holiday.


 A representative from the 4-star Kim Do Royal Hotel Saigon said their 127 rooms, priced from VND2.3 million per night, were fully booked a month ago. Similarly, Tan Son Nhat Hotel in Phu Nhuan District reported being fully booked from April 15 to May 20. Hotel representatives noted that most reservations were made in mid-March by tour groups and individual guests booking via online platforms.


 Nguyen Tran Phuong Uyen, a hotel sales consultant with over 10 years of experience, observed that before the pandemic, travelers typically preferred vacationing away from urban areas. However, an increasing number of people, especially younger travelers, now choose city breaks. The many planned events for the April 30 holiday have significantly driven up demand for accommodation in HCMC.

 Agar proses perjalanan pulang kampung lebih lancar, KAI Daop 6 Yogyakarta menyediakan satu kereta ekstra dengan rute Yogyakarta-Gambir (KA 10121). Kereta ini dimulai operasinya pada tanggal 30 Maret 2025, dengan keberangkatan pertama di jam 00:25 Waktu Indonesia Bagian Barat dari Stasiun Yogyakarta. KA 10121 ini akan terus melayani sampai 13 April 2025. Penyediaan kereta tambahan lebaran tersebut pasti meningkatkan jumlah kursi untuk musim Lebaran dari Daop 6 Yogyakarta sehingga dapat memenuhi permintaan calon pemudik yang belum berhasil mendapat tempat duduk dalam gelombang mudik maupun baliknya.


 Untuk pengawasan arus balik, periode puncak diprediksikan jatuh pada hari Minggu, tanggal 6 April 2025 dengan total 23.825 karcid sudah laku terjual. Namun perlu dicatat bahwa angka tersebut dapat berubah mengingat proses pembelian tiket belum berakhir.

Dengan total kapasitas mencapai 418.122 kursi selama masa Angkutan Lebaran, KAI berupaya menghadirkan layanan transportasi yang andal, nyaman, dan tepat waktu bagi seluruh pelanggan.

 아시아나항공은 다음 달인 2027년까지 예정된 대한항공との 통합을 앞두고 부채 항목 중 하나인 마일리를 정산하기 위해 미국에서 특별히 마일리지만 사용할 수 있는 비행기를 운영하게 됐습니다. 이러한 조치는 회사의 재무 구조를 개선하고 통합 준비를 하려는 의도가 반영되었습니다.
 
 
 24일 항업계 소식통에 따르면 아시아나항공이 다음 달부터 인천에서 로스앤젤레스(LA)와 뉴욕으로 가는 route를 포함해 총 6편의 운행 스케줄 동안 마일리지를 위한 전용 항공사를 운영할 계획입니다. 회원들을 격려하여 495좌석 규모의 A380 대형 여객기를 이용합니다. 할인된 마일리를 통해 일반 좌석은 왕복 요금 없이 간격 없는 비수기에 경유하는 경우 3만 5천 마일, 그리고 비즈니스 클래스는 같은 조건 하에 6만 2천 5백 마일이 필요하게 됩니다.
 
 
 아시아나항공이 미주 노선에서 마일리지를 전용으로 사용하는 비행기를 운행하기로 한 것은 통합 이전의 부채와 책임을 줄이는 방법이라고 해석할 수 있다.
 
 
 마일리는 일반적으로 항공사의 부채로 간주되며, 따라서 대한항공과 아시아나가 마일리지 제도를 통합하게 될 시에는 아시아나의 마일리지 남은 부분이 대한항공에게 추가적인 짐으로 작용될 가능성이 있습니다.
 
 
 이에 대해 아시아나항공의 대표는 "하반기에 마일리지 전용기가 더욱 늘어날 계획"이라고 언급하면서도 "일반 비행 경로에서도 마일리지 이용 가능한 좌석을 현재보다 더 많이 제공할 것"이라는 의사를 나타냈다. 또한 그는 "고객들이 마일리를 좀더 편하게 쓰도록 여러 가지 해결책들을 모색 중"이라고 덧붙였다.
 
 
 이미 작년 말부터 아시아나항공은 김포와 제주 간 국내 선으로 운행하는 마일리지 항공권 서비스를 시작하여 좋은 반응을 이끌었습니다. 총 네 차례에 걸친 프로모션을 진행하면서 약 3만 8천 개의 마일리지 좌석을 더 제공하였고, 그 결과 평균적으로 92% 이상의 예매율을 기록하기도 하였습니다.
 
 
 일부에서는 약 1조 원 규모의 사용되지 않은 마일리지가 통합 이전까지 소진되지 않을 경우 마일리지 가치가 떨어질 수 있음을 걱정하는 의견이 제기되고 있다.
 
 
 양사의 마일리지를 1:1 비율로 합치는 것이 쉽지 않을 수 있고, 아시아나항공 마일리지가 불이익을 받는 방식으로 바뀔 가능성도 있다고 한다.
 
 
 항공사와 관련된 한 소식통은 "소비자들이 통합 이전에 최대한으로 마일리를 효율적으로 이용해야 한다"면서도 "통합 절차 중에는 임시로 마일리지의 활용이 제약받거나 복잡해져서 일부 특별 혜택 또는 파트너 서비스가 줄어들 수 있다고 지적했습니다."
 
 
 이어 “사용 기회가 감소되면 보너스 항공권 예매도 어려워질 수 있어 마일리지 사용 기회가 줄어들 것을 대비해야 한다”고 덧붙였다.
 
 
 한편 조원태 대한항공 회장은 마일리지 통합과 관련해 “합리적인 통합 방안을 도출하고 있다”며 “조만간 통합 방안을 발표할 예정”이라고 밝혔다.

 A despairing business owner says his flight booking 'turned into a nightmare' after he made a small error on the ticket, with the airline telling him he will have to buy a new one for £9,000 - or more than four times the price he originally paid.


 Alex Coombes, 39, from Worthing, West Sussex, who owns a chain of local restaurants called Perch, set his heart on going to a large hospitality expo taking place in Shanghai, China, next weekend.


 His colleague Damian Wilkins, 45, from Eastbourne, was hoping to accompany him to the international showcase, with the pair looking for new ideas for their expanding restaurant business.


 But just weeks after booking their tickets for £2,100 each with China Eastern Airlines, Mr Coombes noted there was one tiny error on the document.


 He had left out a 'k' and spelt his colleague's surname spelt as Wilins, rather than Wilkins.


 Mr Coombes was confident such a small error could be rectified, but he claims he has instead been 'dragged through weeks of stress, spiralling costs, and sheer corporate absurdity.'


 Despite spending hours on the phone to American Express Travel Agency, through which he booked the tickets, as well as racking up an international phone bill of  hundreds of pounds speaking to China Eastern Airlines, neither business has been able to resolve the issue.


 Instead, he has been told to cancel his ticket and purchase a new one for his colleague - with today's price quoted as £8,948.12.

 Even that figure is likely to rise again, he has been warned.


 Mr Coombes now stands to lose thousands buying a new ticket - or simply cancelling his travel plans altogether.


 In desperation, his colleague even explored the idea of changing his name by deed poll so that they could keep the erroneous ticket.


 The restaurant owner today described his treatment over one tiny spelling error as 'outrageous', adding a stonemason working at one of his restaurants even joked that 'if the ticket had been carved into granite it would have been easier and cheaper to correct.'


 Recalling his ordeal, Mr Coombes told MailOnline: 'At the end of November, after a long day at work, I finally sat down to book our flights to China.


 'We used an agent rather than booking through the airline directly, because we had used AmEX previously.


 'It was 11pm at night — I remember the exact time because I was knackered.


 'The trip was meant to be short — just a few days — because neither of us can be away from the business long, but what should have been a simple booking turned into a nightmare.

 'It was only in January that I noticed when we printed out the tickets and sorting through hotel bookings that I had misspelled the name.


 'It's a hundred percent my fault and I'm not trying to shirk that at all.


 'We got back in touch with
 
 American Express Travel, who said at the time it didn't seem to be a problem.
 


 
 'But then we went through a couple of hours of being on hold and requests and callbacks and things like this and they didn't seem to be able to help.
 


 
 'Then we started to contact China Eastern Airlines who we hadn't used before, but it turns out they just have no UK base.
 


 
 'They have an address in London that we went to - but there's nothing there anymore.
 


 
 'And if you phone the UK number just cuts you off after 20 seconds. The only way you can contact them is to pay £1.80 a minute and phone China - and we have spent hours upon hours trying to get this fixed.
 


 
 'We emailed every contact we could find for the airline, even searching LinkedIn.

 'I just can't believe that it's such an impossible task to get resolved.'
 


 
 After getting nowhere with the airline, Mr Coombes said he returned to Amex and was informed the only thing he could do was to cancel the trip and lose the fare.
 


 
 After complaining, another customer services representative told him the airline had agreed to refund the fare minus £380, as long as they purchased a new ticket.
 


 
 But at that time, the prices had leaped up to £3,800, meaning he would be out of pocket.
 


 
 As days have gone by with the issue still unresolved, ticket prices now stand at around £8,948.12 - four times the amount he originally paid.
 


 
 Mr Coombes also claims that as for the terms and conditions for the airline, he could 'not find anything, anywhere'.
 


 He said: 'There's nothing written down for it and every time you ask for this no one can send them through.'


 The frustrated traveller added that while Amex directed him to speak with the airline, China Eastern Airlines has informed him they can only deal with the agent he booked through - leaving him in an unresolved situation between the two companies.


 'I've never come across anything so preposterous,' he said.


 'We won't be booking with the travel agent ever again - and apparently if we had booked this directly with the airline, you can make changes with them - but the airline doesn't really want to speak to us because our contract exists with Amex.


 'We've just had real difficulties getting people to return a call and make any sense out of this.


 'I just want the surname amended on the flight. I can't understand how it's this difficult.


 'I can't imagine that this is that much of a challenge for anybody to achieve.


 'It's an enormous amount of money for us to spend on doing something like this, we're really trying to do something different and put ourselves out there, but it's just been going on for so long.


 'It's taking a huge amount of energy for just changing a single letter in a surname.


 'I know I made a mistake, and an admin fee is entirely reasonable, but £9,000 just feels outrageous.'

 In a statement, Heathrow Airport noted that teams are actively supporting passengers affected by the power outage. It announced the deployment of hundreds of additional staff across terminals and added flights to the schedule to accommodate an extra 10,000 travelers.

 I thought I had to resign myself to my situation—until an Aussie coworker suggested the app Timeshifter, which, as you might guess, transformed my life.

 A $24.99 (£19.94) yearly subscription that provides limitless plans.


 You'll receive instructions on when to rest, nap, seek or dodge sunlight, as well as guidance on drinking coffee or gulping down supplements.


 Since melatonin requires a prescription in the UK, I won’t be using it. However, you can provide this information to Timeshifter, and they will adjust your schedule accordingly.

 Testing out Timeshifter

 I was scheduled to depart at 9 am on a Sunday, but found myself starting my preparations on the Friday prior instead. I received instructions to wake up by 7 am and hit the hay before 10 pm.


 On Saturdays, the schedule changed by an hour, so I found myself awake at 6 am.

 The appointed day arrived for my flight when I needed to wake up at 3 am. It seemed rather harsh since I wasn't scheduled to depart for the airport until 5:30 am.


 Timeshifter also advised me to manage my caffeine intake strictly, as it had become quite essential for me.


 I required some illumination as well, you know, but unfortunately, it was quite dim. Therefore, I turned on all the lights in my apartment, hoping this might achieve the desired outcome.


 Things began to take an odd turn as I hopped onto my morning flight around 9 am. At this point, I was prohibited from consuming caffeine, whereas my co-passengers were enjoying their espressos.


 Nevertheless, I had faith in the procedure, and as soon as it hit 3 pm London time and bedtime rolled around, I genuinely started feeling quite drowsy.

 At 4 PM UK time, which is 6 PM local time here. I figured I might as well catch some sleep at the airport, but my nervous side was too terrified about potentially missing my connection, so I remained wide awake instead.


 Two hours later (8 pm in Doha), I found myself onboard.

 The flight would take a lengthy 14 hours, so it was time to get some rest again. Easier said than done, I ate something and spent about an hour watching "Ocean’s 11" before eventually drifting asleep.


 To be honest, the military timetable introduces a layer of stress that makes relaxation quite difficult. Nonetheless, I adhered to it as closely as possible and was typically just around an hour off from my scheduled plan.


 I needed to set an alert to wake up after six hours, following the instructions from Timeshifter, and began consuming coffee aggressively. This seemed somewhat contradictory. Late at night in both the UK and Doha, most of my co-passengers were asleep.


 Nevertheless, I followed instructions and viewed "Oceans 8" and "12" prior to my last planned nap at 8 AM in Doha, which would be six hours after. At this point, I genuinely lost track of time, thus I appreciated having Timeshifter make choices for me.


 An hour later, I woke up just as the plane began to descend, and it was 5 pm in Sydney. Surprisingly, I felt quite alright.

 After a 14-hour flight, I felt like Andy Dufresne escaping from Shawshank. Despite having cabin fever and a stiff neck, I was surprisingly wide awake.


 At the hotel, I had dinner without dozing off into my noodles, and soon after, it was time to hit the hay.


 After returning to our hotel rooms, my companions noted that they felt quite alert since it was still morning in the UK, whereas I was eager to call it a day.

 I slept very soundly.


 The next day, my fellow travelers talked about their exciting evenings. One of them actually woke up at 3 am and went on a ferry ride around Sydney Harbour during the sunrise. In contrast, I had been snoozing peacefully throughout the night.


 As others complained and reached for sleep aids over the following days, I felt quite pleased with how my Timeshifter experiment had gone.


 Ever since, I've been enthusiastically recommending it to everyone who would listen. If you're embarking on a long-haul journey, I cannot endorse it highly enough.

 DUBAI, 19th March, 2025 (WAM) — Emirates has announced an expanded list of routes that will be serviced by their Airbus A350 planes, coinciding with the arrival of additional recently acquired aircraft into their fleet.


 As part of its recent introduction of the A350 aircraft, the carrier is broadening its reach across short- and medium-haul routes within the Middle East, Gulf Cooperation Council countries, and Europe. This marks the inaugural use of the A350 for Emirates in both Africa and Southeast Asia as well.


 Adnan Kazim, who serves as the Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer at Emirates, stated, "The deployment of our A350 fleet into various areas such as the Middle East, Gulf Cooperation Council countries, Europe, Africa, and Southeast Asia showcases the adaptability and effectiveness of these planes."


 Emirates' newest A350 aircraft will commence their planned routes as follows: Tunis — six times per week from June 1st; Amman — once daily beginning June 1st; Istanbul — one flight each day starting July 1st; Dammam — also with a single daily service commencing July 1st; Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam) — every day starting August 1st; Baghdad — three flights per week (on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Sundays) kicking off August 3rd; Oslo — one flight daily from September 1st onwards.


 In the upcoming months, Emirates will unveil new A350 destinations, covering both long-distance flights, as additional airplanes are incorporated into its fleet.

He found this transformation only took a few hours; however, some travelers grumbled about catching whiffs of livestock—horses, pigs, or cattle—that the airplane had transported previously during the night.

 BOAC: 1940-1974
</h2>

 In May 1952, The British Overseas Airways Corporation spearheaded the dawn of the modern jet era and eventually transformed into "the world's favorite airline" —British Airways.
 BOAC de Havilland Comets
 A four-engine airplane roughly the same size as a Boeing 737 departed from London, making stops in Nairobi en route to Johannesburg, and then traveling through Southeast Asia before reaching Tokyo. Each leg carried 44 passengers. These flights marked the beginning of regular international commercial jet routes.


 Six years afterward, the company succeeding Imperial Airways achieved yet another "first". On October 4, 1958, BOAC launched flights using their De Havilland Comet 4, traveling from London to New York's Idlewild Airport, which is now known as JFK. This marked the start of the transatlantic jet era. By the end of the 1950s, BOAC boasted being the "worldwide airline," serving destinations across all continents excluding Antarctica.

 Pacific Southwest Airlines: 1949-1988

 Even though it may seem otherwise, air travel hasn’t ever been more affordable due to the emergence of budget airlines. Companies such as Ryanair, easyJet, and Wizz Air trace their roots back to Southwest, which is currently the largest discount carrier in America. Interestingly enough, Southwest itself can attribute its beginnings to a California startup known as Pacific Southwest Airlines (PSA). According to Herb Kelleher, who started Southwest, the creation of PSA played an essential role in his decision to establish Southwest. But what exactly made PSA significant and how did it leave such an impact?


 On May 6, 1949, it made its maiden flight. A rented Douglas DC-3 plane left San Diego Airport, formerly called Lindbergh Field, carrying 24 passengers to Oakland Airport with a stop at Hollywood Burbank Airport along the way. The company’s founder, Kenny Friedkin, capitalized on the fact that since they were an intra-California air carrier, they weren’t bound by U.S. federal price controls, which allowed them to reduce ticket costs.


 He provided nothing extra. There wasn’t a dedicated branded registration zone at airports, and luggage was measured with basic home scales. The service included just one travel class and utilized only one kind of airplane—an idea later adopted by every contemporary budget airline. Within its inaugural year, PSA became profitable.

In the following decade, the company went public, providing funds necessary for expansion through the use of Boeing 727s followed by Boeing 737 jetliners adorned with their distinctive orange, red, and white color scheme. Known for friendly service and competitive pricing—often just half that of competitors such as TWA—the carrier branded itself as "the world’s friendliest airline."


 In 1978, the U.S. Airline Deregulation Act removed federal oversight of ticket prices, which led to increased competition and expansion within the industry. Recognizing this shift, PSA expanded its reach outside of California, adding routes to cities such as Reno, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, and Cabo San Lucas in Mexico. To prepare for significant growth, PSA placed an order for specially adapted Lockheed L-1011 wide-body aircraft.


 In 1986, USAir, which would later be renamed US Airways, purchased the airline for $400 million. By 1988, PSA had been fully absorbed into the expanded company. However, the effective business strategy employed back then has become standard practice nowadays for short-distance airlines globally, even being adopted by certain companies like British Airways who might have benefited from understanding this approach earlier.

 Emirates: 1985-present
</h2>

 Three decades back, Emirates was an unfamiliar entity to most, and locating tiny Dubai on a globe was a challenge for many. During this period, British Airways stood at the pinnacle of global aviation, outpacing all competitors in terms of international passenger traffic. The transformation since then has been remarkable. Similarly, Chinese passengers often pass through Dubai on their way to various African countries. The airline handles such significant volumes of Indian passengers traveling through Dubai instead of taking nonstop flights from cities like Delhi or Mumbai that it has earned the nickname "India’s de facto national carrier."

 Clark has also accomplished the remarkable achievement of making passengers' favorite airplane his own. He has acquired over 120 Airbus A380 superjumbos and transformed them into Emirate’s signature feature by equipping first-class cabins with showers, setting up a spacious bar for business-class travelers, introducing an exceptional premium-economy section at the forward end of the plane, and maintaining a decent standard in the economy class.  The Flying Kangaroo has overcome what its CEO, Vanessa Hudson, refers to as "the tyranny of distance." The airline was an early adopter of ultralong-haul travel, offering 15-hour journeys from cities like Sydney and Melbourne to destinations such as Los Angeles, Dallas, and Johannesburg—while simultaneously boasting one of the strongest safety records within the aviation sector. Later, it initiated direct flights from Europe to Perth, introducing 17-hour routes connecting major European cities including London, Paris, and Rome with Perth.


 Now it is set to accomplish something that very few aviation experts believed could happen:
 begin 21-hour continuous service from London and New York to Sydney and Melbourne
 Starting in 2026, flight QF2 will depart from London early in the day and land in Sydney during the later part of the afternoon the next day. Meanwhile, QF1 will take off from Sydney in the evening and reach London the subsequent morning.

 Among the 34 passengers on board for Qantas' experimental direct flight from London to Sydney in 2019, I was fortunate enough to be present. This historic trip spanned 10 different time zones and crossed through 11 countries. Our route took us initially towards eastern Europe, traversing Russia, Kazakhstan, and China before we turned southeastward over the South China Sea toward Australia’s north coast near Darwin in the Northern Territory. Finally, we made our way down under the vast Australian sky.
 
 Captain Helen Trenerry joyfully declared upon entering what would become the second sunrise during this unprecedented voyage: "Congratulations! You have just joined an elite group known as The Rare and Secret Order of the Double Sunrise." She added with pride, "None others can claim to witness such a spectacle—two sunrises within one flight—and still reach their destination quicker than anyone else."


 In 2026, the inaugural fee-paying travelers will embark on a comparable journey aboard an Airbus A350 equipped with an additional fuel tank and reduced seating capacity to minimize weight. Hudson believes that first-class direct flights to Sydney will become the pinnacle of prestige in aviation — "the modern-day Concorde." Currently, she is determining just how exorbitant she can set the price point for this service. I’d wager around £20,000 for a round-trip ticket.

 BOAC de Havilland Comets
 A four-engine airplane roughly the same size as a Boeing 737 departed from London, making stops in Nairobi before reaching Johannesburg, and also passing through various locations in the Far East en route to Tokyo. Each leg of this journey carried 44 passengers. These flights marked the beginning of regular international commercial jet service.


 Six years afterward, the company succeeding Imperial Airways achieved yet another "first". On October 4, 1958, BOAC’s De Havilland Comet 4 commenced flights from London to New York’sIdlewild Airport, which is now known as JFK. This marked the start of the transatlantic jet era. By the latter part of the 1950s, BOAC was boasting itself as the "worldwide airline," serving destinations across all continents excluding Antarctica.

 In the 1970s, when the Boeing 747 entered service, yearly passenger counts surged dramatically, enabling BOAC to start making profits. Numerous people consider the BOAC jumbo with its distinctive livery to be the most aesthetically pleasing version of the aircraft.


 In the past, well-traveled routes have remained quite similar to those of today—such as the journey from London to New York, which was initially flown by the 747, along with trips from London to Johannesburg, Tokyo, and the Kangaroo Route to Sydney. This continuity can be traced back to 1955.
 Traveling from London to Sydney lasted for four days.
 Including stops in cities such as Zurich, Beirut, Karachi, Kolkata, Singapore, Jakarta, and Darwin—a stark contrast to current operations—Qantas is set to initiate direct flights from London, which will last approximately 19 hours. During the 1950s and 1960s, passengers favored dishes like Maine lobster, Parma ham cornets, and roasted sirloin of beef, along with beverages including highballs and Campari and soda.


 In 1974, BOAC combined forces with British European Airways to create British Airways. Even now, BA retains BOAC’s call sign for communications with air traffic control: "Speedbird."

 Pan Am: 1927-1991
</h2>

 While BOAC might have claimed victory in the race to launch the first passenger jet services, it was Pan American Airways – commonly known as Pan Am – that took the lead.

 , coining the term “the jet set”. For some, the appeal was the trademark blue-and-white globe logo. For others, it was the stewardesses’ electric blue uniforms, with jaunty pillbox hats. Everyone agreed that its first transatlantic route in 1958, linking the city that never sleeps, New York, with the city of love, Paris, was the most romantic of the new jet age. Breakfast at Maxim’s, anyone?


 Pan Am became part of popular culture, featuring in hit movies of the 1960s. In

 included a futuristic Pan Am Space Clipper heading to a space station orbiting Earth. When the Beatles landed in New York in 1964 for their first US television appearance on
 The Ed Sullivan Show
 , they did not step off a BOAC jet but rather a Pan Am 707 named, appropriately enough, Clipper Defiance.

 The job of Pan Am flight attendant – or air hostess, as it was then – was highly coveted. “It was one of the best jobs a woman could get,” Christel Vane, a former Pan Am hostess,
 told
 Telegraph Travel
 back in 2013
 . “There was nothing else open for women, unless you wanted to be a secretary.”


 In 1970, Pan Am launched operations with Boeing’s 747, which earned the nickname "the Queen of the Skies." The company effectively served as America's de facto national airline, yet its financial situation started deteriorating following the 1973 oil crisis, during which crude prices surged fourfold, rendering the operation of its 747s economically unviable. Additionally, lacking substantial domestic routes within the U.S., the airline struggled to maintain full flights. By November 1978, it only serviced 65 destinations globally. Despite this decline, Pan Am continued operating until around a decade later when it filed for bankruptcy in 1991.


 Despite its closure, Pan Am continues to be held in such high regard that over twenty years after it ceased operations, it became the focus of a 14-part TV period drama series featuring Margot Robbie as an airline stewardess. The distinctive blue luggage adorned with the white globe emblem seen in the show still commands top dollar at auction sales today.

 Pacific Southwest Airlines: 1949-1988
</h2>

 Even though it may seem otherwise, flying has become more affordable now than ever before due to the emergence of low-cost airlines. Companies such as Ryanair, easyJet, and Wizz Air trace their roots back to Southwest, which is currently the largest budget carrier in America. Interestingly, Southwest itself can attribute its origins to a California-based startup known as Pacific Southwest Airlines (PSA). According to Herb Kelleher, who established Southwest, the success of his company wouldn’t be possible without PSA. But what exactly made PSA significant, and how did it leave an impact?


 On May 6, 1949, it made its maiden flight. The rented Douglas DC-3 plane left San Diego Airport, formerly called Lindbergh Field, with 24 passengers aboard, making stops at Hollywood Burbank Airport before reaching Oakland Airport. The company’s founder, Kenny Friedkin, capitalized on the advantage that being an intra-California air carrier provided him; exempting them from U.S. federal price controls allowed him to reduce ticket costs significantly.


 He provided nothing extra. There wasn’t any special branding for check-ins at airports, and luggage was measured with basic home scales. The service included just one class of travel and utilized only one kind of airplane—an idea later adopted by every contemporary budget airline. PSA became profitable during its inaugural year of business.

 During the 1950s, Friedkin utilized Douglas DC-4 planes to broaden operations, initiating routes between San Diego and cities like San Francisco, San Jose, and Ontario. In the following decade, the company went public, providing funds necessary for expansion through the acquisition of newer models such as the Boeing 727 and subsequently the Boeing 737 jetliners, adorned with their signature orange, red, and white color scheme. Known for friendly service and competitive pricing often half that of competitors including TWA, PSA branded itself as "the world’s friendliest airline."


 In 1978, the U.S. Airline Deregulation Act removed federal oversight of ticket prices, leading to increased competition and expansion opportunities. Recognizing this potential for growth, PSA extended its routes past California into cities such as Reno, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, and Cabo San Lucas in Mexico. To prepare for significant expansion, PSA placed an order for specially adapted Lockheed L-1011 wide-body aircraft.


 In 1986, USAir, which would later be renamed US Airways, purchased the airline for $400 million. By 1988, PSA had been absorbed into the bigger company. However, the effective business strategy employed back then has become standard practice nowadays for many short-haul airlines globally, even extending to certain companies like British Airways who might not have followed this path otherwise.

 Emirates: 1985-present
</h2>

 Three decades back, Emirates was an unfamiliar entity for most individuals, and locating Dubai on a map posed challenges for many. During this period, British Airways stood as the global favorite airline, transporting a higher number of international travelers compared to all other airlines. The transformation over time has been remarkable. Nowadays,

 by scheduled available seat kilometers — totaling 344.7 billion in 2023-24 — with its main hub being Dubai International,
 the most heavily used international airport globally
 , managing 90 million passengers annually.


 Emirates has established itself as a major player under the leadership of two British executives—Chief Executive Sir Tim Clark and Head of Dubai International Paul Griffiths—by developing a hub-and-spoke system. This approach has redirected the focus of international air traffic from Europe towards the Middle East. As a result, travelers from Europe use Dubai as their gateway for flights to destinations like Australia, Asia, and Africa. Similarly, Chinese passengers often stop over in Dubai when heading to Africa. Due to the high volume of Indian passengers connecting through Dubai instead of taking non-stop flights from cities such as Delhi or Mumbai, Emirates has earned the moniker "India’s unofficial flag carrier."

 Clark has also achieved the rare feat of “owning” passengers’ favourite aircraft. He has bought more than 120 Airbus A380 superjumbos and made them Emirates’ calling card by installing showers for first-class passengers, a large bar for business-class fliers, a class-leading premium-economy cabin in the front nose cone, and a not-too-shabby economy. Passengers love the innovations. By contrast, Emirates’ nearest rivals operate no more than a dozen A380s each.


 If all that weren’t enough, Emirates has all but single-handedly created the city state of Dubai. Many locals in Dubai joke that it is “an airline with a city attached”.

 Qantas: 1922-present
</h2>

 The Flying Kangaroo has conquered what Vanessa Hudson, its chief executive, calls “the tyranny of distance”. It pioneered ultra-long-haul services, flying 15-hour routes from Sydney and Melbourne to Los Angeles, Dallas and Johannesburg – while also maintaining one of the best safety records in the industry. It moved on to establish the first non-stop routes from Europe to Perth, with 17-hour flights between London, Paris and Rome and Perth.


 Now it is about to do something few aviation analysts thought possible:
 start 21-hour non-stop services from London and New York to Sydney and Melbourne
 . From 2026, QF2 will leave London before lunch and arrive in Sydney in the late afternoon of the following day. QF1 will leave Sydney in the evening and arrive in London the next morning.

 At 10,978 miles, the services eclipse
 the longest flight at present
 – Singapore Airlines’ service between New York and Singapore, which travels 9,500 miles in just under 19 hours.


 I was one of 34 passengers on a non-stop London-to-Sydney test run that Qantas flew in 2019, crossing 10 time zones and 11 countries. We headed east over northern Europe, Russia, Kazakhstan and China, and then south across the South China Sea, before making landfall near Darwin in the Northern Territory and crossing Australia. “You are now members of the Rare and Secret Order of the Double Sunrise,” announced Captain Helen Trenerry, as she flew Qantas flight 7879 into the second dawn of our record-breaking journey. “No one else has seen two sunrises in one flight and got to Sydney faster than you.”


 In 2026, the inaugural group of paying travelers will embark on a comparable journey aboard an Airbus A350 equipped with an additional fuel tank and reduced seating capacity to minimize overall weight. According to Hudson, traveling non-stop to Sydney in first class will become the pinnacle of prestige in aviation—akin to "the new Concorde." Currently, she is determining just how exorbitant she can set the ticket price. I would bet on around £20,000 for a round trip.
