Kristen Wiig and Gloria Estefan are set to move into Gabby's Dollhouse: The Movie.
The casting of these roles has been verified for the movie directed by Ryan Crego, which combines live action with animation. This was disclosed by Margie Cohn, President at DreamWorks Animation, as she made the announcement onstage at the Colosseum within Caesars Palace in Las Vegas during Universal Pictures’ CinemaCon event.
Gabby's Dollhouse: The Movie discovers that actress Laila Lockhart Kraner is returning to her iconic character from the cherished television show. In this movie, we follow the young protagonist who embarks on a journey across town alongside her grandmother, played by Estefan, heading towards the bustling metropolis known as Cat Francisco. However, complications arise when Gabby’s treasured toy house falls into the clutches of an unconventional feline enthusiast called Vera (portrayed by Wiig). Determined to reunite all the Gabby Cats dolls and rescue the precious miniature home, Gabby ventures out into reality itself for what turns into quite an escapade.
Currently in its eleventh season and available for streaming on Netflix, Gabby's Dollhouse was created by Traci Paige Johnson and Jennifer Twomey. It regularly charts among the top 10 most-watched TV shows on Netflix. The series follows a tween who, after unboxing items, uses the power of her magical cat ears to shrink down into an animated version of herself to go on miniature adventures with her kitty pals, called the Gabby Cats.
The film was penned by Crego with Melanie Wilson LaBracio and Adam Wilson. Gabby's Dollhouse: The Movie opens in theaters on September 26.
While performing onstage, Cohn elaborated on the significant cultural influence Gabby has garnered over her brief four years of existence following creation by DreamWorks. This includes highlights such as a popular YouTube channel amassing three billion views, successful merchandise lines, and consistent placement within Netflix’s top ten rankings. “Gabby is making waves now and poised for even greater expansion,” stated Cohn, unveiling initiatives driven by NBCUniversal aimed at broadening the franchise through ventures like theme parks, live events, games, and interactive experiences. Cohn also hinted towards future developments, noting, “Our character is all set for her cinematic introduction” which promises to deliver an entirely fresh blend of family-oriented adventures.
