17 Top Southeast Asian Eats on Asia’s 50 Best List This Year

 Nine from Bangkok, seven from Singapore, and one from Jakarta have been named among Asia's 50 Best Restaurants 2025 list at the annual awards.


 Gaggan Restaurant in Bangkok was voted the best this year.


 Located in the Watthana District in the heart of Bangkok, the restaurant is known for its fine-dining experience, offering progressive Indian cuisine with influences from around the world.


 This marks the first time the restaurant by chef Gaggan Anand has won the top prize since he redefined his restaurant concept and moved to a new location in 2019, following previous wins in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018.


 It ranked third on the list last year.


 No Vietnamese restaurants appeared in the top 50 this year, though
 Anan Saigon
 in Ho Chi Minh City ranked 48th on the list last year.


 The World's 50 Best Restaurants is an annual award initiated by U.K.-based media company William Reed in 2002, with the participation of more than 300 critics, chefs, restaurant owners, and culinary experts worldwide.


 Voters are required to have dined at the eateries they recommend during the last 18 months and are prohibited from voting for establishments they own or possess a financial stake in.

 India progresif di Bangkok, Gaggan, dinobatkan sebagai Restoran Terbaik Asia pada edisi ke-13 penghargaan tersebut, yang diselenggarakan pada Selasa, 25 maret 2025 di Seoul, Korea Selatan.


 Pengahargaan ini sekaligus menjadi yang kelima kalinya bagi Gaggan, yang tahun lalu menduduki peringkat ketiga, dinobatkan sebagai restoran terbaik. Restoran yang berlokasi di distrik Wattana, Bangkok, ini baru saja dibuka pada 2019.


 Pada awal memulai restoran, Gaggan Anand, sang pemilik restoran, mengaku tidak memiliki ekspektasi bahwa Asia akan menjadi pusat gastronomi. “Saat kami memulai restoran ini, ini bukan tentang saya, tetapi tentang Asia.  Lebih lanjut, penghargaan khusus yang diberikan termasuk Sommelier Terbaik Asia, dimenangkan oleh pemilik-sommelier Kazutaka Ozawa dari Crony di Tokyo, dan Koki Pastry Terbaik, yang diraih oleh Dej Kewkacha dari Gaggan di Louis Vuitton di Bangkok. Vicky Cheng, chef pemilik Wing and Vea di Hong Kong, memenangkan

 A popular Mexican restaurant chain has declared bankruptcy and plans to shut down 76 outlets, becoming the latest addition to the expanding roster of casual dining establishments facing collapse.


 At On the Border Mexican Grill & Cantina - famous for its cheese dip, tacos, fajitas, and enchiladas -
 
 declared bankruptcy earlier this month
 
 .


 The Tex-Mex restaurant chain has now disclosed the scale of its store reductions spanning 24 states.

 Several restaurants have already shut down, and the remaining ones are set to close soon. With 119 outlets at the beginning of the year, they might be left with fewer than 50.


 In their Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, the company attributed its financial struggles to economic conditions, challenges in hiring staff, and issues with their creditors.


 "The company has faced challenges recently due to various economic conditions that have had an adverse effect," stated Jonathan Tibus, the chief restructuring officer of On The Border.


 'Casual dining establishments are significantly affected by consumers' preferences for eating at home rather than going out.'


 The number of the company's 2,800 employees who will be impacted remains uncertain.

 In 1982, On the Border initially launched with just one cantina and was acquired by Brinker International after twelve years.

Beloved City Restaurant Closes Its Doors

Sam Prince, the owner of Hospitality Group, shared the news on social media with devoted patrons, explaining that their lease for Angel Place was coming to an end and it seemed like the appropriate moment to move on.


 He extended an invitation to his customers to partake in one final banquet to "mark ten years of operation, heartfelt welcome, and their remarkable community" prior to closing down after their last day of service on March 29.

 Patrons expressed their dissatisfaction over the restaurant shutting down and pleaded with the owners to consider reopening at a different site.


 Susan Potthurst shared that she has been a big fan for many years and expressed her disappointment about the restaurant closing down.


 “I’ve reserved a table for dinner this coming Friday and I’m eagerly anticipating enjoying your delicious cuisine once more at George Street before saying goodbye. Hopefully, you’ll consider opening another location soon,” she mentioned.

 The restaurant draws inspiration from Mr. Prince’s Sri Lankan roots, reflecting both his cultural background and his mother’s culinary skills.


 According to its website, Mr Prince joined forces with Melbourne-based entrepreneur Ian Hicks to establish SPHG.

 Although platforms such as Appointment Trader claim they can self-regulate the market, the reality is that this often leads to regular consumers being disadvantaged, and businesses that didn’t opt into these practices suffering harm. With reservations going to whoever offers the most money, only affluent individuals—like celebrities such as Justin Bieber or entities like the NBA—are capable of consistently securing bookings through payments. As stated in the press release from Stefani’s office: "This has fostered a dining environment where exclusively those willing to cover additional costs can obtain sought-after tableings at trendy eateries, thereby denying countless people and families the chance to merely reserve spots after restaurants make them available."


 Even more problematic, individuals interested in dining at the restaurant but unwilling to pay an additional fee for booking a table end up missing their chance. Consequently, restaurants may find themselves with empty seats even when they haven't agreed to sell reservations.

 If you thought all McDonald’s restaurants were the same – think again.


 In a fascinating book called McAtlas, a devoted fan of the fast-food chain, Gary He, reveals that it operates in a bewildering variety of outlets, from the grand to the bizarre, serving dozens of different localised dishes, from the weird to the wonderful – including 70 variations of the chicken burger alone.


 And here, Gary, from Brooklyn, New York, tells MailOnline Travel about the highlights of a global tour charted in the tome that saw him visit a ski-thru McDonald’s in
 <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/sweden/index.html">
 Sweden
 </a>
 and try meals from McSpaghetti to macaroni soup.


 There are more than 41,000 McDonald’s in over 100 countries, and Gary managed to get himself to 55 countries across six continents to photograph hundreds of the branches.


 But it was the McSki, open only during the winter months in Lindvallen ski resort, Sälen, Sweden, that was Gary’s ‘personal favourite’.


 Opened in 1996 and designed to look like a lodge, this branch features a ski-thru window at the back where passers-by can order from the El Maco menu – a Tex-Mex offering only available in Nordic countries.


 Gary tells us: ‘The McSki was isolated, on the side of a mountain, and allowed for some of my favourite pictures from the entire trip.’


 Another highlight for Gary was in Roswell, USA - a UFO-shaped McDonald’s embracing the local area’s history of ‘

 Gary adds: ‘It’s also one of the few McDonald’s restaurants in the world allowed to have a gift shop – and who doesn’t love merch?’


 Gary was also a fan of China’s first McDonald’s. Found in Shenzhen’s central shopping district, Dongmen, it serves unusual desserts such as taro pie, made from the root vegetable that’s popular there.


 In McAtlas, Gary reveals how this McDonald’s branch opened in 1990, at a time when China ‘continued to liberalise its economy and the local population surged with workers looking to reap the benefits of the Special Economic Zone’.


 He adds: ‘It’s beautiful and historically significant.


 ‘Once a major experiment in an economic sandbox, it now feels frozen in time, as every other building around this area is a modern glass-and-steel structure.’

 The former galley, meanwhile, has photos and notes about the history of the plane and even a view into the cockpit.

 ‘That was the biggest pain to get to,’ Gary tells us. ‘Not only is Auckland very far from my hometown of New York, but then I had to get on a prop plane for another couple of hours to the centre of the north island.


 ‘But seeing it for myself and taking pictures of it was well worth the 24-hour trek just to get down there.


 ‘There was a real joy walking up to it after seeing so many photos online. It’s iconic.’


 Another favourite McDonald’s for Gary, much closer to home, was Denton House, in Hempstead, New Hyde Park, New York, due to its history – and the fact it became a ‘harbinger’ for the rest of Long Island’s McDonald’s architecture in the area.


 Built in 1795 and then converted into a two-storey mansion in the 1860s, complete with the colonnade and circular veranda still seen today, Denton House was a private residence until after World War I, when it was turned into a funeral home and then into various restaurants.


 By 1986, Gary explains in McAtlas, the property had fallen into disrepair, so McDonald’s bought it for $1million to knock it down and build a ‘then-standard’ flat-roofed restaurant in its place.


 However, a petition from locals led to the property being deemed a landmark in 1988, and McDonald’s was ‘forced to preserve and restore the building’, eventually opening it in 1991, ‘complete with chandeliers and exposed wood beams’.


 Gary says this inspired communities in Long Island to fight for the McDonald’s in their towns ‘to better resemble local architecture’, with many succeeding.

 Gary first realised how much McDonald’s localises its menus when he visited Morocco during Ramadan and was served an iftar kit (a gift box given to celebrate the Muslim festival) made up of dates, chebakia (a honey-covered local pastry), a yoghurt-milk beverage, and Harira soup.


 He’s now had plenty of different foods from McDonald’s around the world that’s traditional to the area, also including poutine (chips, cheese and gravy) in Canada and burgers served in rye buns in Finland.


 But the most unusual McDonald’s food Gary says he ate was in the Philippines, where he tried the local delicacy of McSpaghetti.


 ‘And it’s not what you’d expect!’ he adds.


 Using a sweet marinara substitute made from sweet banana ketchup and chopped-up hot dog sausages, McSpaghetti was launched in McDonald’s in 1986, in response to Philippines chain Jollibee having introduced its version, Jolly Spaghetti, eight years prior.


 Gary says: ‘It became a flavour profile that every local loved, and Jollibee made it insanely popular at kids’ birthday parties, so McDonald’s just had to sell its own version of it when it launched in the Philippines.


 ‘The McSpaghetti was really fun to look at and to photograph.’


 Hong Kong’s macaroni soup (pasta topped with ham and egg, in beef or chicken broth) was another highlight. Gary described it as a ‘comfort food’, having grown up ‘in a household that had immigrated from Southern China’, where the dish is popular.

 ‘I was pleased to see that on the menus in Hong Kong,’ he says.


 Despite having now published McAtlas, Gary’s journey hasn’t ended.


 He’s ‘keeping an eye’ on China and Japan’s ever-changing menu, and also planning to head back to

 . At this branch people in boats can pull up at a jetty and order food from the water.


 ‘Although the idea is quite cool, I didn’t get to see any boats pull up to the dock either of the times that I visited the location,’ he finishes. ‘Maybe a third visit will be the lucky one.’

 “A Peruvian hole-in-the-wall-type restaurant, Fusion Ceviche is full every night of the week, so much so that sometimes they sell out of dishes,” says Nossy.

 The brand was founded in 1936, reports its Instagram page. “It’s famous for Chongqing Noodles and has a long heritage of unique snacks,” it adds.


 “They have the best DanDan Noodles — not many people know this place but I recommend it to everyone, and everyone who goes loves it,” says Kiani. Wondering what dan dan noodles are? Essentially, they are spicy flavour explosion that you will love when you slurp, even if it makes you sniffle. The Sichuan noodle dish is tossed in spicy seasame sauce, and that packs quite a punch.

 “They brought the original German Döner to Dubai,” says the founder of Little Foodie, who wants to stay anonymous. The spot opened just over two months ago and so not many people know about it.


 Habibi Döner (Dh39). “It’s made with imported turkey seasoned with homemade spices, stuffed in a fluffy pide bread with fresh vegetables and sauces, so you can get a taste of the signature recipe without traveling to Germany. The menu features a variety of Döner wraps, platters, bowls and desserts. You can dine-in, takeaway for a quick meal on the go or order delivery if you’re in and around Nad Al Sheba via Talabat and Deliveroo.

 “This hidden gem starts with a unique entrance: a tiny Asian store with a refrigerator door that transports you to a relaxed and simple dining space where the culinary magic happens,” says Sana.


 She adds: “From the moment you step inside, the friendly staff and cool ambiance set the stage for an unforgettable meal.”


 Z’s lychee iced tea, served in a quirky plastic bag complete with fresh lychees. “The beef with rice, egg garlic fried rice, and lamb chops were standouts. The A5 Skewer and juicy lamb chops were equally impressive. But don’t leave without trying the Black garlic ice cream with chocolate mousse sprinkled with hazelnut praline,” she adds.

 Step into Tuli’s shoes with a Tribiani sandwich loaded with extra mustard paired with an iced Spanish latte. "This is undoubtedly the finest sandwich any woman could desire, and no, my fondness for Joey isn’t influencing this opinion!" claims Tuli, alluding to the Friends' character portrayed by Matt LeBlanc.

 He recommends “their wonderfully sour tikka lemoni (a.k.a Bahraini) kebabs, Khoobideh kebab and helpings of their Sangak. It’s rustic but the flavours are unlike anywhere else in the city”.

This movement campaigned against alcohol consumption, arguing that it caused disruptive conduct.
