There was no relief from discussions surrounding U.S. President Donald Trump or his trade tariffs. On Wednesday, he declared his so-called "Liberation Day" tariffs. These new duties did not follow an expected complex calculation method; instead, they targeted all countries having a trade surplus with the U.S., imposing reciprocal taxes. As part of these measures, Australia faced a basic import tariff increase of 10%, equivalent to what we apply to goods coming into Australia from the U.S. However, China along with several Southeast Asian nations heavily dependent on American markets received even higher punitive tax rates in response.
 
 
 It appears that the beef sector may suffer the most in Australia. The United States is the top importer of Australian beef, with American buyers consuming $3 billion worth of high-quality products from them last year. Due to a trade embargo enacted in 2003 aimed at safeguarding the country’s livestock from the potential threat of bovine spongiform encephalopathy—commonly known as mad cow disease—Australia doesn’t import U.S. beef. This situation has been a point of contention for U.S. trade representatives for quite some time.
 
 
 The frenzy seen in the US might originate from other places — yet it still appears widespread.
 
 
 This week, lithium and energy stocks suffered the most significant losses, as an ongoing glut of lithium, concerns over tariffs, and OPEC increasing oil output wreaked havoc on these industries.
 
 
 Australia's leading hard rock lithium producer, Pilbara Minerals, lost over 25 percent of its market capitalization for the week as analysts expressed concerns about potential underestimations in their yearly production forecasts. This comes amidst ongoing negative sentiments towards lithium.
 
 
 The value of iron ore and lithium heavyweight Mineral Resources plummeted another 25% over the past week. The firm's stock price has fallen well beyond 80% from its peak levels recorded two years prior. This week brought additional challenges for both the corporation and its former billionaire leader, as their 'slightly profitable' lithium ventures edged closer to being merely sustainable. Moreover, founder Chris Ellison faced legal action from the company’s once-loyal investors through a class-action lawsuit.
 
 
 The legal action alleges that Ellison engaged in misleading and deceptive behavior as part of an extensive equipment and tax exploitation scheme lasting more than ten years in the British Virgin Islands. This misconduct led to a significant drop in the company's stock value upon revelation. The leading mining corporation has seen its market capitalization plummet significantly, falling beneath the $4 billion mark. Moreover, its substantial $5 billion debt appears to be increasing considerably.
 
 
 Should there be a silver lining from this week, it would be the surge in gold prices amid Trump’s tariffs and global uncertainties. The precious metal reached an unprecedented level, hitting $5050 per ounce at one point.
 
 
 As expected, this week’s Bulls N’ Bears ASX Runners of the Week list has fewer highlights than usual—though some positive signs emerged amid overall losses. A leading cybersecurity firm secured the top spot by a significant margin, while an intriguing lithium company received recognition amidst general turmoil within their industry.
 
 
 
 WHITEHAWK LTD (ASX: WHK)

 This week’s Bulls N’ Bears ASX highlight goes to cybersecurity company WhiteHawk Limited, whose stock surged dramatically to reach an impressive peak of 3.2 cents on Wednesday—a significant jump of 300 percent from its closing value of 0.8 cents the previous week.
 
 
 Following the announcement of securing a significant position as the primary cybersecurity collaborator for an extensive $920 million USD ($1474 million AUD) contract from the U.S. government, the firm's stock value skyrocketed. This deal involves prominent players such as Knexus Research, Babel Street, and Dun & Bradstreet.
 
 
 WhiteHawk states that they will serve as the exclusive cybersecurity solutions provider, offering AI-driven tools to handle cyber threats within federal supply chain operations over a decade-long agreement. This partnership has the potential to generate significant ongoing income for the small-cap firm with continuous issuance of task orders.
 
 
 The agreement is supported by a White House executive order from 2025 and aims to simplify governmental purchasing processes, which could create additional chances for WhiteHawk to thrive.
 
 
 Given the scale of the agreement and WhiteHawk’s crucial position within it, investors seemed quick to buy shares following the news release on Tuesday morning.
 
 
 WhiteHawk saw a significant trading volume of $6 million for the week, with its market capitalization eventually stabilizing just above $12 million by Friday.
 
 
 WhiteHawk is providing its AI-driven solutions for managing cyber risks within the supply chain specifically for the U.S. government during an increasing worldwide focus on cybersecurity and tech advancements. The firm could secure numerous additional contracts due to being selected as a top-tier supplier for the U.S. government.
 
 
 
 OZR Resources Ltd (ASX: OZM)
 
 
 
 
 Increased by 94% (from 6.7 cents to 13 cents)
 
 
 
 OzAurum Resources took out second place on this week’s ASX Runners of the Week list after the gold junior’s share price peaked up 94 per cent to finish at 13c. Well over $7M of the company’s stock traded hands.
 
 
 On the very day when the gold price surged to an unprecedented peak, the firm released reverse circulation drilling findings from its Mulgabbie North gold venture located in Western Australia. Notable discoveries were made at their Cross Fault site, showcasing significant intersections such as 48 meters of ore yielding 1.66 grams per tonne (g/t) of gold starting right from the surface level, along with another segment measuring 12 meters averaging approximately 4.26 g/t of gold beginning at depths over 18 meters deep.
 
 
 OzAurum plans to immediately initiate a subsequent drilling campaign, which includes diamond core drilling, beginning early next week. In the near term, the company aims to increase its current gold resource of 260,000 ounces throughout its project area.
 
 
 The drilling campaign this week effectively verified the existence of high-quality gold mineralization across an extensive 400-meter stretch.
 
 
 It seems that OzAurum has uncovered a high-quality, sandstone-hosted find characterized by gold mineralization and widespread quartz veins, along with pyrite and arsenopyrite mineralization. The company reports encountering broad areas of sulfide minerals, which suggest the possibility of substantial gold deposits.
 
 
 Sandstones serve as a brittle host rock and are characteristic of the extensive gold deposits currently being extracted from the highly profitable 4-million-ounce Carasou Dam basin, located merely 2 kilometers away from Mulgabbie North.
 
 
 The firm thinks its latest cross-fault prospect lies on the Relief Shear approximately 2 kilometers south of the current 260,000-ounce Mulgabbie North mineral deposit along the same fault line.
 
 
 There are still seven reverse circulation holes covering 745 meters left to process in the assays. This leaves ample opportunity for shareholders eagerly awaiting gold assay results, even as the broader market remains unenthusiastic.

 The firm covertly rejected a $150 million USD ($240 million AUD) cash bid from China’s Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt Co and France’s Renault Group for its Hombre Muerto West (HMW) and Candelas lithium brine ventures in Argentina, deeming the proposition as "opportune" and "underpriced."
 
 
 On Thursday morning, the rejection of the offer was concealed in an additional trading statement, where the firm’s stock price began the day without any change.
 
 
 The market swiftly caught on, causing Galan’s share price to surge almost 50% to reach as high as 16 cents per share, jumping from a market capitalization of $92 million the previous week to an intra-day peak of $134 million.
 
 
 This amount fell significantly below the suggested $240 million cash acquisition.
 
 
 The increase went against the wider trend of declining markets.
 
 
 The unexpected, conditional, and non-binding proposition put forth by battery materials heavyweight Zhejiang Huayou and electric vehicle manufacturer Renault marked the second such uninvited offer extended to Galan within less than 12 months.
 
 
 In August last year, Galan was approached with an unexpected, private, preliminary, non-committal offer from Energy Exploration Technologies to purchase their Argentine properties for $100 million in cash and stock. However, the company swiftly declined this proposition.
 
 
 Galan thinks that finalizing offtake and financing agreements for phase one of HMW should happen soon, which could result in a clearer and better acquisition outcome compared to the $240 million offer that was merely 2.6 times the company’s previous market value.
 
 
 Galan’s HMW and Candelas projects boast a substantial 9.5 million tonne lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE) resource with a high grade of 841 milligrams per liter (mg/L). The firm has progressed beyond half the journey toward achieving phase one production.
 
 
 The project lies approximately 100 kilometers south of Rio Tinto’s Rincon project, situated in Argentina’s notable Lithium Triangle. In 2022, when lithium prices were higher, this same area was purchased by the major mining company for slightly above $1 billion due to its substantial non-JORC 5.8 million tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE) resources. Notably, Galan’s Hombre Muerto salt flat boasts lithium concentrations twice as high as those found at the Rincon site, measuring around 420 mg/L.
 
 
 Galan’s choice to hold off on production for its affordable lithium venture appears perplexing; however, the leadership is determined to negotiate a favorable deal for their extensive initiative—possibly when lithium prices rise or after they quickly secure both a buyer agreement and funding.

 Therefore, undoubtedly, global influences will affect the Monday opening. Considering the current setup, the weekly closing value of Nifty has dropped beneath both the 20-day and 50-day moving averages. However, on the contrary, Bank Nifty presents a distinct situation since it remains steady and stays above multiple moving averages including those representing short-term, medium-term, and long-term trends. This indicates robustness within this sector.
 
 
 However, on the flip side, Nifty has surrendered all its gains and breached the crucial support zone. Therefore, for Monday, 22,760 becomes the key level for Nifty. If it breaches these levels, we might witness an extension of this downward trend, with potential continued selling pressure heading toward 22,500 in the following week.
 
 
 However, at 22,760, if we manage to hang on, we might observe some retracement activity in the upcoming days. During this retracement, 23,100 and 23,200 could serve as key resistance zones for now since they represent significant supply levels within the short-term framework.
 
 
 When examining the larger market, only a handful of sectors exhibit resilience from a technical standpoint. The banking sector, including non-banking financial companies (NBFCs), as well as consumer goods firms in the FMCG industry, show some robustness. Additionally, certain cement stocks are demonstrating similar strength. However, clear leadership across the board remains lacking.
 
 
 The banking sector might provide enough backing for the market to continue climbing. Therefore, for the upcoming week, we can expect a trading range with 22,760 as the lower boundary and 23,200 as the upper limit for Nifty.
 
 
 
 You pointed out that Nifty Bank might drive the overall market performance. Indeed, during today’s trading session, observe how Nifty Bank performed; it remained quite robust despite everything else.  Certainly! Yes, Bank Nifty appears quite promising, and I think that when it surpasses 51,700, we might witness an upward movement extending towards 52,000 to 52,200. Given that Bank Nifty remains steady above its 200-day moving average, many major private sector banks show strong signs of accumulation. Additionally, public sector banks have exhibited robust momentum throughout this week. Therefore, Bank Nifty seems likely to bolster the overall market performance, with a suggested protective stop-loss positioned near the 51,000 mark. If current levels hold firm, reaching up to 52,200 within the upcoming week is plausible.
 
 
 
 What positions have you taken? Which stocks are you betting against? Are you considering shorting Nifty IT? It seems like there could still be more downside for this sector. Remember how NASDAQ faced tough times yesterday, and NIFTY IT has been struggling due to reduced demand from the U.S. market as well as diminishing support from a weakening dollar.  Therefore, certainly stay away from IT-related investments and consider maintaining a cautious position when trading both Nifty IT and major large-cap IT stocks. Upon examining the broader picture, Nifty IT remains significantly beneath the 200-day moving average, with many leading IT companies having breached their monthly support levels.
 
 
 Therefore, we might observe additional vulnerability in Nifty IT, and similarly, I concur with Mr. Bagga’s perspective on the metals sector, where weaknesses persist.
 
 
 Therefore, both of these sectors seem to be in the bearish phase, and we might witness further declines in them. Hence, I believe that shares from these sectors should be avoided. Instead, one could consider taking long positions in the banking sector along with NBFCs. Both areas appear promising, particularly within banking where large-cap banks are seeming quite appealing.
 
 
 Therefore, among private sector banks like ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, and Kotak Bank, several appear appealing. Additionally, the FMCG segment shows promise; however, only certain selected FMCG stocks are performing well. Thus, a few specific FMCG shares could be considered for short-term trades. Furthermore, the cement industry presents another area with potential opportunities since this sector has demonstrated resilience over the past week.
 
 
 Therefore, the cement industry might experience an uptick in the upcoming week. Consequently, these three areas appear promising from a trading perspective, particularly for long positions.
 
 
 
 Specific stock choices, currently there are two buy recommendations that I find appealing.
 
 
 Rajesh Palviya:
 
 Therefore, the first one is IndiGo, whose stock price is nearly at an all-time high level. Given how well the stock is performing amidst this volatile market, we might see a potential target of around 5280. Hence, investors could consider buying InterGlobe Aviation with a stop loss set at 5,000. On the flip side, IT appears weak once more; thus, HCL Tech seems like a viable option for a short position in the upcoming week. We anticipate a downward target of about 1380 with a stop loss positioned at 1455.

 ("DIWIDA" |) -Indian shares are set to open lower on Thursday and remain under pressure after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a 26% reciprocal tariff on imports from the South Asian nation, a level that caught some analysts by surprise.


 The GIFT Nifty futures were trading lower by 0.22%, sitting at 23,178.5 points as of 8:30 a.m. IST. This suggests that the benchmark Nifty 50 index might start the day beneath Wednesday’s closing mark of 23,332.35.


 The Indian rupee is similarly expected to decrease, influenced by the downturn in Asian stock and foreign exchange markets. [INR/]


 Trump's tariff announcement on India on Wednesday was part of his plan to impose a 10% baseline tariff on all trade partners from April 5, with higher duties on dozens of other countries, including 34% on China from April 9.


 Macquarie analysts said the 26% reciprocal tariffs on India are "much worse than what we had anticipated".


 It seems likely that U.S. effective tariffs, even after negotiations, are likely to rise to about 20%-25%, a far worse outcome than anticipated, Macquarie estimated.


 Other Asian markets plunged on the day, with MSCI Asia ex Japan down 1%, as investors fled to the safety of bonds, gold and the yen as the unexpectedly steep tariffs threatened to upend trade and supply chains. [MKTS/GLOB]


 "There were some expectations that India would have some concessions. But the silver lining is that tariffs (for India) are lower than China, Taiwan, Vietnam and several other ASEAN countries," said Ambareesh Baliga, an independent market analyst.


 That could make some Indian exports relatively more competitive.

 () -Canada's main stock index rose on Monday on broad-based gains driven by hopes for a moderate approach by the U.S. on new tariffs.


 Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index was up 1.31% at 25,297.01, its highest level in three weeks.


 U.S. President Donald Trump's administration is likely to exclude a set of sector-specific tariffs while applying reciprocal levies on April 2, according to media reports over the weekend that helped boost investor sentiment.


 "There's a lot of optimism that the U.S. may be more targeted in their tariffs versus a broad-based approach," said Ian Chong, portfolio manager at First Avenue Investment Counsel.


 Currently, the headlines in the U.S. are boosting all North American markets (including Canada).


 On the TSX, the information technology sector gained almost 2%, as blockchain farming company Bitfarms increased by 3.23% following a 2.4% rise in Bitcoin’s value.


 The energy sector saw an increase of 1.4% due to the rise in oil prices. [O/R]


 The significantly weighted financials also increased by 1.4%.


 In the meantime, copper miners saw gains as traders boosted their exports to the U.S., reacting to President Trump’s threatened tariffs on imported industrial metals. Shares of Teck Resources, First Quantum Minerals, and Hudbury Minerals rose between 1.8% and 2.8%. [MET/L]


 In terms of data, U.S. commercial activities gained momentum in March; however, increasing concerns about import duties and substantial governmental budget reductions cast shadows on the outlook for the remainder of the year.


 Canada’s January GDP numbers along with the U.S. Federal Reserve’s favored measure of inflation, known as the Personal Consumption Expenditure (PCE) data, will be released later this week.


 Upon returning home, newly appointed Prime Minister Mark Carney announced an unexpected general election scheduled for April 28 on Sunday, stating that he required a robust mandate to address the challenges presented by Trump.


 Within the list of individual stocks, Peyto Exploration & Development saw an increase of almost 4% following BMO's upgrade of its rating from "market perform" to "outperform."

 On Wednesday, during the "Freedom Day" celebration at the White House Rose Garden, President Donald Trump declared reciprocal tariffs. He stated that a base tariff of 10% would apply universally; however, specific nations would also face extra "reciprocal" duties. These new taxes seem to add onto previously mentioned levies for automobile imports and from China. As anticipated, car imports will incur a tax rate of 25%.


 The SPDR S&P 500 exchange-traded fund decreased by 2.2% during post-market hours. It appears that the reciprocal tariffs along with the 10% base tariff might be responsible for this decline. Additionally, the Roundhill Magnificent Seven ETF fell by 2.4%.


 "President Trump has concluded his tariff address at the White House, and according to Wedbush analyst Dan Ives, these new tariffs are 'even worse than what the market had anticipated as the worst-case scenario,' " he notes.


 There is cause for optimism. The S&P 500 has dropped approximately 8% from its recent peaks, encapsulating much negative information. Should conditions improve on Thursday, investors ought to monitor the 5750 mark during an upturn. Surpassing this threshold "would definitely bolster the argument that the most severe part of the correction may have passed," according to experts.

Recently, Krishna revised downward his forecasted earnings per share for the S&P 500 in 2025 from $271 to $262 and continues to scrutinize various situations that might erase all projected profit increases anticipated for 2025.


 Krishna remains optimistic regarding large technology stocks despite the current climate. The price-to-earnings (PE) multiples for companies like Apple, Amazon.com, Alphabet, Meta Platforms, Microsoft, and Nvidia have dropped to around 24 times their earnings, which represents a decline of approximately 25% from their most recent high point at 32 times. This makes the tech industry an attractive refuge. According to Krishna, as long as technological profits keep expanding, "where better could one seek shelter should circumstances deteriorate?" he questions pointedly.


 However, they aren’t performing well during after-hours trading. Apple has seen a drop of 6.1%, Amazon.com is down by 5.1%, Alphabet has decreased by 3.3%, fell by 4.6%, Microsoft has slipped by 2%, Nvidia’s value has reduced by 4.9%, and Tesla has plummeted by 5.8%.


 Apart from sector rotation, some Wall Street analysts remain cautiously upbeat even with the decline on Wednesday. "We should avoid completely avoiding risks or moving entirely to cash strategies that limit potential gains," states Arnim Holzer, Global Macro Strategist at Easterly EAB Risk Solutions.


 Nevertheless, the likelihood of things going terribly awry remains substantial, as Holzer admits. He characterizes this situation as a "fabricated emergency," implying that it could either be swiftly resolved or escalate further.


 Mutual tariffs provide opportunities for discussions yet they also pave the way for increased suffering and unpredictability, states Adam Hetts, who leads multi-asset strategies globally at Janus Henderson Investors. "The imposition of substantial duties on an individual nation-to-nation level indicates 'a negotiation strategy,' keeping investors edgy indefinitely," he notes. "Despite witnessing this administration’s unexpectedly robust endurance against market distress, the crucial issue remains: How far can their resilience stretch when faced with genuine economic hardship during these talks?"


 Up until now, the impact has primarily affected sentiment indicators; however, this situation could evolve. As Nigel Green, CEO of deVere Group, articulates, "This is how you undermine the global economic powerhouse while professing to boost it."  ASX lithium share
 
 Pilbara Minerals Ltd
 
 (
 ASX: PLS
 ) has suffered a very painful decline in recent times. It has dropped by 52% in the last year alone, as the chart below shows.


 It's important not to anchor our thoughts back to previous share price levels. Just because it was at $5 a couple of years ago doesn't mean it's destined to get back there any time soon. However, it doesn't need to recover to $5 to make great returns from here.


 A recovery back to $3 would mean capital growth of more than 60%. Let's consider whether the ASX lithium share is capable of producing good returns and whether it's a buy.


 There's one thing that investors need to pay attention to the most, in my view.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-volatile-lithium-price">
 
 Volatile lithium price
 
</h2>

 The lithium price is now a fraction of what it was a couple of years ago.


 In the
 FY25 first-half
 , the business reported that its average lithium sold price was US$668 per tonne, down 58% compared to what it achieved in the first half of FY24.


 As a commodity business, the company's production costs don't change much between results. Therefore a fall in the revenue per tonne leads to a significant decline in profit.


 It reported that operating profit (
 EBITDA
 ) fell 89% to $48 million, and it saw a 132% plunge of statutory
 net profit after tax (NPAT)
 to a loss of $69 million. Profit generation is obviously integral for most businesses, including Pilbara Minerals shares.


 However, there was one positive related to the lithium price. Pilbara Minerals experienced a 3% rise of the realised price to US$700 per tonne for the three months to December 2024 compared to the three months to September 2024 where the realised price was US$682 per tonne.


 Any increase in the commodity price is very useful for the business because of the positive effect of operating leverage.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-solid-long-term-industry-dynamics">
 
 Solid long-term industry dynamics
 
</h2>

 The elevated Pilbara Minerals share price from a couple of years ago was due to investor optimism on how much lithium demand could grow in the longer-term. While the short-term is challenging, the company still points to a promising long-term outlook.


 The ASX lithium share pointed out in its HY25 result presentation that there were 1.3 million electric vehicle sales in January, representing 18% year-over-year growth.


 Pilbara Minerals cited research that showed electric vehicle (EV) sales are forecast to grow by 19% year over year in 2025. EV sales could increase at a
 compound annual growth rate (CAGR)
 of 17% to 2030.


 Overall, lithium demand is expected to increase by around 2.5x by 2030 at a CAGR of around 16%.


 Pilbara Minerals management said:

 My 2 cents on Pilbara Minerals shares
 
</h2>

 The business is clearly going through a rough period. It's difficult to know what's going to happen next, though it was promising that the latest reported quarter saw an increase in the lithium price.


 If the lithium price can continue increasing, then the Pilbara Minerals share price could be materially undervalued.


 With a lower lithium price, additional global lithium production growth may have slowed enough to materially help the future
 supply and demand
 dynamics, providing support for the lithium price.


 It's a higher risk idea, but I think the ASX lithium share could be an opportunistic buy today. However, a recovery would take a while and I wouldn't bet the house.
