Simply knowing what chargers are available and how well they're working goes a long way for EV adoption.
What's your biggest issue with owning and driving an electric vehicle? I'm guessing it's related to public charging, and you're not alone. Fast chargers are getting better , but there still aren't enough of them across the country—and they don't always work And nothing compares to the frustration of reaching a station only to discover your battery is almost depleted, with all charging spots occupied.
According to recent research, providing individuals with this information might encourage more consumers to join the electric vehicle market. The National Bureau of Economic Research estimates that EV sales could increase by 8% by 2030 if there were improved access to real-time data about charging stations.
Keep in mind that this 8% increase is specifically due to knowing the location of operational chargers and their usage. It does not factor in enhancements in charging speeds, reliability, or the growth in the number of charging stations.
The study, called Uncertain Charges: Real-Time Charging Information and the Uptake of Electric Vehicles Over a span of six months, from March to August 2024, researchers kept an eye on PlugShare data. They concentrated specifically on DC fast chargers situated alongside six significant American freeways: I-5, I-10, I-75, I-80, I-90, and I-95, spanning approximately 13,538 miles throughout 40 different US states. Each charging station included in this research was positioned within two miles of a freeway exit, reflecting distances typically explored by electric vehicle drivers during travel. Furthermore, to provide more detailed insights, the study narrowed down this range to merely half-a-mile in highly urbanized regions to accommodate higher traffic volumes.

The research revealed that based on data from the PlugShare app, merely 33.2% of charging stations provided current updates. When excluding Tesla and Electrify America from the dataset, this percentage increased significantly to 70.9%. It appears these two entities own many rapid-charging points yet do not integrate smoothly with the PlugShare platform.
Certainly, you can obtain live updates about both EA and Tesla Supercharger stations; however, this necessitates using their respective dedicated applications. While locating stations and checking current statuses is complimentary, these apps do provide additional perks via paid subscriptions. According to the research, managing several apps just to access up-to-date charger details presents significant inconveniences. In extreme cases, attempting to juggle various apps whilst operating a vehicle could pose safety risks. A practical alternative suggested is PlugShare—a user-friendly all-in-one option available without charge, which aggregates data from many different charging providers.
Real-time updates regarding chargers might still have room for improvement. However, what connection exists between these improvements and an increase in electric vehicle (EV) purchases? To explore this, researchers polled both current EV owners and those who do not own one yet, posing identical sets of inquiries related to charging stations, their accessibility, and the likelihood of being able to recharge effectively across different places. The study gathered responses from 1,820 participants, with most coming from individuals without an electric vehicle.
According to the responses to these inquiries, researchers discovered that potential electric vehicle purchasers would be more likely to proceed with their purchase if they received additional details about charging stations. Following extensive calculations, the study concluded that this could result in an 8 percent increase by the year 2030.
The complete study also highlights possible effects on emissions if those 8% of buyers become more active, yet the key point remains that information empowers us. Consolidating real-time reports from charging stations would not only help present electric vehicle owners but attract more individuals to join this sector.
