 Honda, the Japanese motorcycle manufacturer, plans to begin sales of its inaugural electric bike manufactured in Vietnam, known as the ICON e:, with prices beginning at VND26.9 million ($1,040), set for launch on April 12.
</p>

 The ICON e, produced in Vietnam’s northern Vinh Phuc Province, comes in three versions: Sport, Special, and Premium. ThePremium model has an initial price of VND26.9 million, whereas both the Special and Sport iterations have marginally higher prices, varying between VND27.1 million and VND27.3 million.
</p>

 Honda will not sell the battery for the motorcycle; instead, they will offer it as a monthly rental for VND350,000 per month.

 ELLABELL, Ga. (AP) — Hyundai celebrated the opening of its new $7.6 billion electric vehicle factory in Georgia on Wednesday by announcing plans to expand its production capacity by two-thirds to a total of 500,000 vehicles per year.

 The news came as President Donald Trump announced
 25% tariffs on auto imports
 at the White House. Hyundai will be spared from those tariffs on its U.S.-made vehicles. Trump praised the South Korean automaker on Monday, saying its American investments are “a clear demonstration that tariffs very strongly work.”

 Hyundai began producing EVs just shy of six months ago at its sprawling manufacturing plant in southeast Georgia. More than 1,200 people are working there.
</p>

 With employees in blue shirts filling bleachers behind him Wednesday, Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chairman Euisun Chung said the company plans to increase the plant's capacity from 300,000 vehicles per year to 500,000. He said it shows Hyundai has come to Georgia “to stay, to invest and to grow.”

 Hyundai Motor Company CEO Jose Munoz said the Georgia expansion was “like building a new plant.”

 Munoz stated to reporters, “This plant could not have arrived at a more opportune moment than right now,” adding that “all the vehicles produced here will undoubtedly be exempt from any tariffs.”
</p>
<p>
 On Wednesday, Hyundai workers joined forces with numerous robots on the assembly line. These machines stamped steel sheets into components like fenders and door panels, welded and painted car bodies, and even parked completed vehicles for their final inspection.
</p>
<p>
 The sprawling plant covering 3,000 acres produces a completed vehicle approximately every sixty seconds. At present, its workforce of 1,200 employees is manufacturing two different electric sport utility vehicles.

 Prior to the announcement of the expansion, Hyundai stated its intention to have a workforce of 8,500 employees at the Bryan County location, situated approximately 50 miles (80 kilometers) west of Savannah. The two companies collaborating on battery production at this facility are projected to contribute an additional 3,500 jobs.

 Hyundai has not specified the number of extra employees required to boost production by 200,000 vehicles annually.
</p>

 In the first six months of 2024, the Ioniq 5 ranked as the second most popular electric vehicle in America, excluding those produced by top manufacturer Tesla.

 Hyundai managed to begin producing electric vehicles in Georgia in under two years following the commencement of construction in autumn 2022. This marked the biggest economic development initiative the state had ever experienced, accompanied by an impressive investment.

  This is the new Smart #5. No, it’s not the fifth model in the Chinese automaker’s portfolio, which makes things rather confusing. But it is the largest, so there’s that.
 </p>
 <p>
  Smart
  has come a long way from the good old days of the tiny ForTwo city hatchback. Now, the company is a joint venture between
  Mercedes-Benz
  and
  Geely
  , and it only makes EVs.
 </p>
 <p>
  Enter the #5, a mid-size crossover that just debuted in Europe with an AMD processor, gigantic screens on the dash and an impressive charging rate, among other things. The base model is called the Smart #5 Pro and it’s powered by a rear-mounted electric motor that draws juice from a 76-kilowatt-hour (74.4-kWh usable) lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery.

  The firm did not specify, however, the basic LFP battery is probably rated for 400 volts. When plugged into a direct current rapid charging station, it can handle up to 150 kilowatts of power, enabling it to increase its state of charge from 10% to 80% in under half an hour. The budget model of this electric vehicle boasts a WLTP-certified total travel distance of 289 miles (465 kilometres) and accelerates from rest to 62 mph (0-100 km/h) in just 6.9 seconds due to its 335 horsepower (225 kW) electric engine.
 </p>
 <p>
  The Smart #5 series becomes far more intriguing when you advance to higher trims. This is due to all models beginning with the Pro+ variant featuring a 100 kWh (94 kWh usable) 800V lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC) battery. Coupled with the solitary rear motor delivering 358 horsepower (267 kW) along with this larger power pack, the Smart #5 boasts a WLTP-estimated driving distance of 366 miles (590 kilometers) per complete recharge cycle.
 </p>
 <p>
  Opting for the dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup boosts the horsepower to 579 hp (432 kW), though the range decreases to 335 miles (540 km). Additionally, this configuration shaves off time significantly, requiring only 4.9 seconds to accelerate from zero to 62 mph.
 </p>
 <p>
  What stands out the most regarding the bigger 100 kWh battery is its capacity to handle up to 400 kW from a DC fast charger. This figure nearly doubles what Hyundai’s E-GMP platform vehicles such as the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 can manage. In comparison, this exceeds the 250 kW charging limit of the Tesla Model Y based on theoretical data. Smart asserts that the #5 model equipped with the large battery can charge from 10% to 80% state-of-charge within less than 18 minutes, making it quicker than
  Hyundai
  ’s 20-minute claim for the
  Ioniq 5
  despite having a smaller battery.
 </p>
 <p>
  There’s also vehicle-to-load functionality which can export power from the main battery to a 230V outlet via an adapter.
 </p>
 <p>
  The #5 seats five and the rear seats can fold flat. However, the biggest party piece is up front where the electric crossover gets no fewer than three screens—a 10.25-inch display for the gauge cluster and two 13-inch OLED, TV-like screens. There’s also a 25.6-inch Augmented Reality heads-up display. If using a smartphone while driving is dangerous, what is this?
 </p>
 <p>
  For what it’s worth, Smart claims its AI-supported voice control can make the whole user experience worry-free, but we’ll have to check that out for ourselves. Speaking of the software and hardware, the #5’s infotainment is powered by an AMD V2000 chipset running the Smart OS 2.0. It offers optimized EV routing and a video center that integrates video streaming services.

  There’s a 20-speaker Sennheiser Signature Sound system on offer which puts out 1,190 Watts and has a fancy lifting speaker on the dashboard. A pretty long list of active and passive safety equipment is also available, including V-shaped curtain airbags, seat-integrated seatbelts, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go, and Highway Assist.
 </p>
 <p>
  The top trim is called Summit Edition and comes with an electric trailer hitch, a roof platform and a side ladder. Somehow, these accessories are considered “off-road enhancements” by Smart. We have doubts.
 </p>
 <p>
  The Smart #5 is not coming to the United States. In Europe, however, it starts from roughly $49,620 (€45,900) for the Pro models and goes up to $61,500 (€56,900) for the Summit Edition with all the bells and whistles.

 As of April 1st, changes to the Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) will affect many individuals due to the increasing number of people owning electric cars.

 Drivers of electric
 vehicles
 haven’t had to pay any tax on their cars for many years, but in 2025 that is set to change as several wide-sweeping tweaks come into force.
</p>
<p>
 But what should drivers of electric vehicles expect and what is the change in terms of cost? Here, we explain what’s on the horizon.
</p>
<h2>
 What is the current state of tax for electric vehicles?
</h2>
<p>
 At present, electric vehicles incur no cost for VED. Though drivers don’t have to pay anything, they still have to get their vehicles taxed, going through the usual process that you might with a ‘regular’ car.
</p>
<p>
 Electric vehicle registration numbers have continued to rise, too, with the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders showing a 41.6 per cent rise in the number of new EVs registered during January 2025.
</p>
<p>
 Only completely
 electric cars
 are free-to-tax, though some extremely low-emission hybrids also qualify but only those produced between 1 March, 2001 and 31 March, 2017.

 What’s changing in 2025?
</h2>
<p>
 As of April 1, 2025, things are set to change for electric vehicles. For the first time, drivers of electric vehicles will be required to pay VED, representing a significant hike in the cost of ownership. Plus, a new Expensive Car Supplement will see buyers of electric vehicles costing over £40,000 paying as much as £620 a year in tax.
</p>
<p>
 For electric, zero or low emissions vehicles registered on or after April 1, 2025, drivers will have to pay the lowest first-rate of tax – £10 – but from the second tax payment onwards, this will rise to the standard rate of £195 a year.
</p>
<p>
 Electric, zero or low-emission cars registered between April 1, 2017 and March 31, 2025, will now pay the standard rate of £195. In contrast, EVs registered between March 1, 2001 and March 31, 2017, will move to the first band that has a VED value, meaning a tax payment of £20.
</p>
<p>
 Electric vehicles have also – up until this point – been exempt from the Expensive Car Supplement, but that all changes from April 1 with cars registered on or after this date are now liable for the additional cost. What does that mean?
</p>
<p>
 Well, drivers of EVs costing over £40,000 will have to pay a standard rate alongside an additional supplement for the first five years from the start of the second payment. For many, this means many owners of an EV over £40,000 will pay £620 per year in road tax.
</p>
<h2>
 Will electric vehicles still prove cheaper to run than petrol and diesel cars?
</h2>
<p>
 These tax changes put a dent in the overall affordability of running an electric vehicle but, in many areas, they should still prove relatively inexpensive to run.
</p>
<p>
 Much of this depends on whether or not an owner is able to access home charging as, with this, they can take advantage of super-low electricity rates offered by EV-friendly tariffs. For an average EV, this could mean a full charge bringing around 200 miles of range for as little as £5. It’s a different story if you can only use public charging, however, where costs are considerably higher.
</p>
<p>
 Electric vehicles do require less maintenance than an equivalent petrol or diesel car, too, since there are fewer moving parts.
</p>
<p>
 That said, EVs still need regularly checking over to make sure that key components are still working as required and consumables such as tyres, wipers and brake pads will still need to be replaced.

  What Is It?
 </h2>
 <p>
  The BYD Sea Lion 7 is a large SUV sporting an oddly silly name. Despite sounding more at home in a children's storybook, it boasts quite remarkable performance features and ample interior room. By equipping the Sea Lion 7 with these attributes, BYD aims to make a strong impression.

  Kia EV6
  , and
  Hyundai Ioniq 5
  squarely in the eyes and hoping they’ll blink first. It looks pretty cool all told, thanks to the firm’s swoopy design language.

  What Are The Specs?
 </h2>
 <p>
  Two drivetrain options are offered. The initial one features rear-wheel drive, delivering 318 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque, equipped with an 82.5 kWh battery for a maximum range of 300 miles (482 km, WLTP). Alternatively, you may opt for dual-axle power, which boosts performance to 530 hp and 509 lb-ft. For all-wheel-drive configurations, there’s an option between an 82.5 kWh battery in the Design AWD configuration or a larger 91.3 kWh variant in Excellence AWD guise. These models claim ranges of approximately 283 miles (455 km) and 312 miles (502 km), correspondingly.

  Each comes with BYD’s fancy Blade Battery, which means not only can it survive things like nails being fired directly into it (a common occurrence somewhere, I’m sure), but it’s also a structural part of the car and helps keep things rigid. Your max charge capacity changes depending on which battery you opt for: Smaller batteries can accept up to 150 kW while the bigger pack can take up to 230 kW.
 </p>
 <p>
  Performance is a BYD ‘thing’, and the Sealion 7 isn’t one to shy away from tradition. The RWD car will crack 0-62mph in 6.7 seconds, and head onto 133mph. That’s is decent, but the bigger-battery all-wheel-drive version will get from 0-62mph in 4.5 seconds and manage the same top speed. Much like the quick Seal, BYD’s so proud of its 0-62mph sprint that it put it on the trunk lid to show the world how quick it is. I guess some people must like that sort of thing.
 </p>
 <p>
  In the UK prices kick off at £46,990 ($61,000 at today’s exchange rates) for the RWD car, topping out at £58,990 ($76,000) for an ‘Excellence’ trim with all the bells and whistles.
  That’s more than the Tesla Model Y
  , and neither version offers more range than the American car. But for some,
  the fact that it’s not a Tesla
  means none of that matters.
 </p>
 <h2>
  How Does It Drive?
 </h2>
 <p>
  In the Design AWD car you get plenty of toys and all the grunt, so it will likely be a hit. That’s the one we drove. If you’re expecting the ride of your life you’ll be disappointed. It’s a biggish, tall SUV that weighs north of 5000 lbs. A Caterham it is not. Sure, it’s smooth, quiet and incredibly quick when you pin it in sport mode, but at no point will you feel engaged or busy. It’s a family SUV—not a Ferrari-baiting monster, no matter how much BYD wants to make of its mammoth power outputs. Come in with the right expectations.

  There are a handful of drive modes to choose from: normal, snow, eco and sport. Unless you’re really in a hurry, you’re best leaving it in either normal or eco and going about your business. Power delivery is silky smooth in either, though in the latter mode it’s numbed to extend range.
 </p>
 <p>
  The ride is a mixed bag. On the highway and smooth roads it’s just fine. You roll around trouble-free, but it can be a touch spongy in the corners, and oddly tough over the rough stuff. For the UK’s roads, it’s an interesting mix.
 </p>
 <p>
  BYD’s hope that the Sealion’s speed will turn it into a sports car is misplaced. It’s not the sort of car that’ll excite people who talk about apexes, lap times and other such things. The steering doesn’t excite, and its handling doesn’t leave you tingling. In all honesty, it is aggressively OK to drive. Unless a dragon or ogre has chased you for a portion of your drive, you probably won’t remember a thing about your journey after you get out. It’s A Car, and that’ll be fine for most buyers.

  What’s Good?
 </h2>
 <p>
  While the drive isn’t anything to scream about, there are some neat touches that stand out. Its 18.3-cubic foot trunk can hold more than enough stuff for five-passenger load, and the trunk’s aperture itself is wide enough that you won’t struggle to get things in and out unless you have a truly knackered back.
 </p>
 <p>
  Then there are the gadgets. BYD views itself as a tech company as well as a car company. If you’re terminally online you’ll have seen its jumping supercar leaping over potholes, or maybe driving itself around a race track. While the Sealion 7 can’t bunnyhop its way around town, it has a few neat tricks.
 </p>

  Its 15.6-inch infotainment screen can rotate from portrait to landscape at the press of a button (or via voice control), so you can choose your own adventure. While Apple CarPlay isn’t supported vertically, the car’s inbuilt tech is supported either way up. Of course, to enjoy it, you have to accept that it’s an all-touch interface. To get to the A/C controls you have to go to a separate screen to fiddle around. If buttons were available it would be easy, but it’s a bit of a faff.
 </p>
 <p>
  But BYD has packed in plenty of tricks. In the Sealion 7 if you place three fingers on whichever screen you’re on (music, nav… anything) and drag them up and down you’ll change the temperature, moving them left to right will adjust fan speed. It’s a really neat touch, and something other screen-heavy manufacturers should copy ASAP.
 </p>
 <p>
  Finally, the build quality and materials inside are cracking. You’d expect it for a car in this class, sure, but trying to find where the ‘budget’ materials are will take some digging.

  What’s Not Good?
 </h2>
 <p>
  Like many contemporary vehicles, the Sealion 7 has poor rear visibility. Despite having a backup camera and various sensors, which are almost state-of-the-art, craning your neck to look behind you only reveals a small piece of glass positioned rather high up. This makes traditional reverse driving challenging.
 </p>
 <p>
  In addition, the Sealion 7 performs adequately across most areas. While it doesn’t stand out particularly in any aspect, it also doesn’t fail miserably anywhere. The car is rather unremarkable, which isn’t entirely bad. However, when investing substantial amounts in a vehicle, one would expect some memorable qualities once parked.
 </p>
 <p>
  Equipped with an 82.5kWh battery, achieving a range of only 283 miles falls short as well. While this figure comes from the WLTP test (during our drive in the Design AWD configuration under varied conditions, we observed about 2.8 miles per kWh—slightly below BYD’s stated estimate of 2.9 miles—but still quite close), come on, BYD. Given your position as the global frontrunner in electric vehicle sales, one would hope for greater advancements.

  While having the most advanced ADAS features is certainly beneficial, the Sealion 7’s drowsiness detection camera tends to be overly sensitive. Located on the A-pillar, this system checks whether your gaze strays from the road ahead and alerts you accordingly. However, when it activates every time you glance at the large display to adjust navigation or audio settings, it becomes quite annoying—especially since interacting with these functions requires focusing on the very same screen causing false alarms.
 </p>
 <h2>
  What Is It Like as an Electric Vehicle?
 </h2>
 <p>
  It's all good. While the charging speed doesn't quite match up with some competitors, it still meets the needs of most users adequately. The technology within is elegant and functions smoothly without unnecessary complications. BYD has clearly honed its skills in manufacturing reliable electric vehicles nowadays. It's merely disappointing that this particular model lacks excitement.
 </p>

  BYD Sealion 7: Verdict
 </h2>
 <p>
  Pricier than a Tesla and slightly less efficient, coupled with a brand prestige that falls short... this vehicle seems destined to fly under the radar. However, its appealing design may lend significant support, along with the advantage of not being a Tesla (considering recent events).
 </p>
 <p>
  For driving enthusiasts, this won’t be appealing. However, for individuals looking for a vehicle that performs all tasks effortlessly and without excitement, it will suffice nicely.
