Every week, Netflix unveils its Top 10 list from the previous week, highlighting the most-watched items movies and TV shows One of the highest-grossing films for the week between March 3rd and 9th isn’t a new release or an old classic but rather a decade-old crime drama led by Emily Blunt. Despite appearing out-of-the-blue, this resurgence can likely be attributed to "Sicario," the acclaimed 2015 suspense film where Blunt plays an FBI agent aiming to capture a high-ranking member of a Mexican drug cartel. Notably, the screenplay was penned by Taylor Sheridan, known for his work on “Yellowstone,” adding significant gravitas alongside contributions from numerous big-name stars, which enhances both its allure and popularity.

"Sicario" stands out as an excellent crime thriller, earning nominations for three Academy Awards: Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, and Best Sound Editing. Looking back, one key aspect that distinguishes this movie is its direction by acclaimed filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, known later for directing "Blade Runner 2049" and the "Dune" sequels. It marked the screenwriting debut of Taylor Sheridan too. This combination brings considerable weight to the production alongside a stellar cast. Emily Blunt leads the group which features renowned actors like Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin, along with a young Daniel Kaluuya before "Get Out," and Jon Bernthal during his peak due to "The Walking Dead." Victor Garber, recognizable perhaps from his role as the methodical Sydney Bristow in “Alias,” adds further depth to the ensemble; I firmly believe each appearance elevates whatever show he’s part of.

When "Sicario" was released, Sheridan wasn't yet the renowned figure he is today; however, this film established his reputation as an outstanding writer, winning him a Writers Guild of America Award for Best Original Screenplay. Although "Sicario" explores similar themes about authority and the tension between legal boundaries and extralegal actions that later define the world of "Yellowstone," it stands quite apart from the Dutton family saga that Sheridan would go on to develop. In fact, "Sicario" aligns closely with another project of Sheridan’s outside the "Yellowstone" series. Special Ops: Lioness The Paramount Plus series focusing on a secret all-women CIA initiative, starring Nicole Kidman and Zoe Saldaña.

Since "Sicario" landed on Netflix on March 1st, it has surged in popularity and currently ranks as the fifth most-watched English movie. Despite receiving favorable critiques from critics upon release and earning respect over time, the rise of both its screenwriter and director to prominent positions within Hollywood during these past ten years probably contributed significantly to expanding its audience. If you’ve already viewed "Sicario," then consider checking out its lesser-known yet equally engaging follow-up, penned by Sheridan—“Sicario: Day of the Soldado”—which is also available for viewing.
