
Chandigarh (Punjab), India - On April 11, ANI reported a fresh development in the recently occurred murder case. Punjab University A student attending a musical event featuring Haryanvi vocalist Masoom Sharm was the subject of a contempt petition submitted by Advocate Yatin Mehta in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. In his plea, Mehta claimed that "the Chandigarh administration and Punjab University weren't following the guidelines provided by the High Court in 2019."
As stated by Advocate Mehta, "In 2019, the court explicitly directed stringent measures be taken against acts of violence, substance abuse, or the playing of contentious music tracks at concerts. It held the Superintendent of Police (SP), Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), and District Collector responsible for enforcing this directive. Nonetheless, these directives have consistently been disregarded, as evidenced by their violation during the latest college function."
In light of the issue, the Punjab and Haryana High Court sent notifications to the university's Dean of Student Welfare (DSW), the District Commissioner (DC) of Chandigarh, as well as the SP and SSP. The court has directed these officials to “appear through video conferencing by May 8 and provide a report on the implementation of the court’s directives over the last five years.”
On March 30, students from Panjab University (PU) in Chandigarh caused an uproar on the campus after a fellow student reportedly died from stab wounds sustained at a music event. The victim passed away due to his injuries earlier today.
After the demonstrations, the school officials initiated an inquiry and heightened safety measures on campus. The university leadership implemented stringent actions by sending out notifications, requiring all students to have their ID cards handy for entrance into the grounds.
Based on early police statements, the event took place when two student factions engaged in violent confrontation during a musical performance by Haryanvi artist Masoom Sharma at Panjab University on Friday, March 29.
Following the incident, law enforcement agencies were dispatched to the campus.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Dilbagh Singh stated, "A first information report has been filed against unknown individuals under Sections 115(2), 126(2), 351(2), and 109. Nobody has been apprehended so far."
University students staged protests, chanting slogans against law enforcement.
Amit Chauhan, who serves as the Dean of Student Welfare at Panjab University, conveyed his distress over the situation, stating, "It deeply saddens us regarding what this student has gone through. The police are currently looking into the case" (ANI).
