<p> <img data-document-id="cms/api/amp/image/AA1CklF1" data-reference="image" src="https://img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/AA1CklF1.jpg"/> </p> <p> Geelong could become just the second team this century to claim successive Rising Star Awards if young defender Connor O'Sullivan 's current form is anything to go by. </p> <p> The Murray Bishrangers product was among the Cats' best on Friday night against Melbourne, recording 23 disposals, 13 marks, eight intercept possessions, six score involvements and 10 contested possessions while using the ball at 87 per cent efficiency. </p> <p> The performance came in O'Sullivan's fifth game at AFL level, having held his place in Chris Scott 's side to start the season following a one-game debut campaign in 2024. </p> <p> The athletic and composed 198cm teenager was taken with Pick 11 at the 2023 AFL Draft off the back of a stellar season with the Allies, who he claimed MVP honours with in the squad's maiden National Championships title. </p> <p> Rated as a mobile key defender who can also swing forward, the Cats are already seeing the signs in their long-term investment of O'Sullivan to start the new season. </p> <p> "It's difficult for very young key defenders to come in and play good AFL footy right from the start," his coach Chris Scott said on Friday night. </p> <p> "It's not as if you can hide outside the contest, you've often got to come in and play on big, strong 10-year veteran key forwards. We've been reticent to throw him to the wolves in that sort of scenario. </p> <p> "But he's a super athlete, one of the best runners in a team of good runners. That's saying something at 198cms. He has the capacity to play as a genuine key defender, but he can read the play well enough (to play elsewhere). </p> <p> "The feedback we got from recruiters is he's a key defender, but he was a high possessions winner in his junior footy. </p> <p> "He's a brilliant athlete to watch in the pre-season, but what appeals to me the most is his craft. He made it as difficult for Melbourne forwards as any of our backs." </p> <p> O'Sullivan's latest performance, which came less than a fortnight after receiving the Round 2 Rising Star nomination, will place the Albury junior ahead of the pack for this year's award. </p> <p> His favouritism follows teammate Oliver Dempsey 's win last season, with the mercurial Cats wing-forward hybrid being the first Geelong player since club great Joel Selwood - who did so in 2007 - to take out the Rising Star Award. </p> <p> O'Sullivan could be the third Cat to claim the Ron Evans Medal and combine with Dempsey to see the Rising Star Award won by the same club in back-to-back years for just the third time in its existence. </p> <p> The last time that feat was managed came in 2001-2002 as St Kilda's Pick 1 and 2 selections from the 2000 AFL Draft - Nick Riewoldt and Justin Koschitzke - took out the title. </p> <p> O'Sullivan's coach was one-half of the only other time a side has won successive Rising Star Awards, with Scott claiming the honour in 1994 - a year after one-time Brisbane Bear Nathan Buckley won the very first honour. </p> <p> Geelong have had three Rising Star nominations since Dempsey claimed his nod after Round 1 last year, with defender Lawson Humphries following suit in Round 18 the same season. </p> <p> The Cats had just one nomination in the 97 rounds prior to Dempsey's, with premiership tall Sam De Koning earning his in Round 11, 2022, snapping a drought after Cat-turned-Docker Jordan Clark 's nomination back in Round 15, 2019. </p>

Cheltenham Festival , Royal Ascot And among all those legendary classics, the race that captures everyone's attention, be you a seasoned champion trainer like Willie Mullins or someone who bets only once a year, is the grand spectacle of Aintree. This is what makes it so significant. </p> <p class="mol-para-with-font"> Certainly, the Grand National has faced increased scrutiny in recent times. Leading up to this festival, which keeps getting more popular, I've had numerous interviews where many have commented that things aren't how they used to be at the race. </p> <p class="mol-para-with-font"> It definitely isn’t the competition I admired growing up, where the barriers looked as towering as mountains. But this one seems too different now. The race has had to evolve, especially following the 2023 run, which was the first time ever that viewing made me feel uneasy. </p> <p class="mol-para-with-font"> Many would argue that the 2024 renewal was too easy to follow, but consider this instead: with the race tightening up near the finish and over a dozen horses still in contention, did those viewers who make watching their yearly habit fret much about how many of the competitors were trained by Mullins? </p> <p class="mol-para-with-font"> Most of the folks gathered at Aintree, as well as those watching from home, won't be concerned with fence sizes or how many horses an owner has entered when the race starts at 4 pm. I hold him in high regard, and he aims to become part of an exclusive club by winning both the Gold Cup and the Grand National in the same year following Inothewayurthinkin's impressive victory at Cheltenham last month. </p> <p class="mol-para-with-font"> Cromwell might have entered Inothewayurthinkin, yet opted for three runners including Stumptown, Vanillier, and my top pick, Perceval Legallois, who was aimed at the Grand National after his impressive victory at Leopardstown during the holidays. </p> <p class="mol-para-with-font"> There’s a strong energy around him, and you can bet he’ll be part of the competition. Vanillier could put up a fearless display as he arrives at Aintree in peak condition; such an effort wouldn’t come as a surprise. Two years back, he finished second, though he underperformed over the past year. He aims to enhance his stellar training record by breaking a 46-year drought at the National. Given all that transpired with Constitution Hill, everyone hopes for some better fortune for him this time around. </p> <p class="mol-para-with-font"> A fantastic tale would involve trainer Richard Phillips and owner John Rosbotham achieving success with Idas Boy; their aspiration for this has existed since they were at junior school together 55 years ago, and the jubilation would be immense should this dream materialize. </p> <p class="mol-para-with-font"> I feel the same way; backing the winning horse would be great. However, even if my chosen horses don't place at all, I wouldn’t complain as long as there’s some drama involved. Kimberley athletes feeling tyranny of distance as costs of national competitions mount

<img data-document-id="cms/api/amp/image/AA1BqbQu" data-reference="image" src="https://img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/AA1BqbQu.jpg"/> <div> <p> Jasper Barnett spends much her time training underwater in a small public pool in Western Australia's north. </p> <p> At just 13 years old, the 50m butterfly and backstroke specialist from Broome already has a swag of medals and records from local and state meets. </p> <p> She's also a talented surf lifesaver, training for ocean races at Cable Beach, which has postcard views but the added threat of stingers, sharks, and crocodiles. </p> <p> "I prefer the pool because it's more safe," she said. </p> <p> Jasper only competes twice a year, 2,000 kilometres south in Perth, and has to re-adjust to swimming in a pool double the size of the one in her home town. </p> <p> "I aim for two to three breaths in 50 metres. It's a more efficient way to not break your streamline when trying to go the fastest," Jasper said. </p> <p> Over the next month, Jasper will tackle one of her biggest competitive campaigns, with the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships on the Gold Coast quickly followed by the National Swim Championships in Brisbane. </p> <p> Jasper, who competes as an individual rather than in a club, has a month of training prior to the national events with specialist pool and ocean swimming coaches in Perth and Queensland. </p> <p> But it doesn't come cheap. </p> <p> Her family has been fundraising to cover almost $15,000 for flights, hotels, food, coaching fees, and equipment. </p> <p> "Even when we go to Perth for the state championships we're still looking at $10,000, and it's always been that way unfortunately," her father Brent Barnett said. </p> <p> "For Jasper, it's always been three weeks off school and specialised training in the 50-metre pool. </p> <blockquote> <p> "Most competitors at the nationals will get to compete from their own postcode." </p> </blockquote> <h4> 'Disadvantaged' from the get-go </h4> <p> It's a scenario echoed across regional Australia, where families and clubs frequently fundraise for athletes to get to the city. </p> <p> The AFL is one of the few sports to have structured and well-funded support programs for country athletes. </p> <p> Broome Little Athletics Centre (BLAC) has almost 200 members and was named Best Remote Organisation in Australia by its peak body in 2023. </p> <p> "Young talent in the Kimberley and other regional areas are already disadvantaged compared to metro athletes due to not having the facilities to train," club president Kelly Ford said. </p> <blockquote> <p> "We have no athletics track here … they're practising on grass, often with no lines … at the hottest time of the year." </p> </blockquote> <p> Ms Ford estimated families were paying almost $3,000 for their child to compete at various state meets in Perth. </p> <p> She said it was essential to keep youth "engaged in the sports they love". </p> <p> "If we don't enable them to easily travel to competitions I fear they'll lose interest and give up the sport completely," Ms Ford said. </p> <h4> Hardly any support for athletics </h4> <p> One of BLAC's rising stars is track and field athlete Annabella Thompson, who has attended state, national, and international competitions. </p> <p> But Ms Ford said there was "hardly any" financial support for the teenager from government bodies. </p> <p> Applications had to be submitted over six weeks beforehand, which was frequently unfeasible for athletes. Additionally, various requirements typically excluded participants younger than 13 or stopped them from traveling across different states. </p> <p> Ms Ford stated that the young athlete relocated to Perth this year to "pursue her aspirations." </p> <p> Ms Ford stated that BLAC frequently pursued grants, donations, and sponsorships, and she commended small enterprises for their kindness and support. </p> <p> She stated that if our athletes received additional support, we might be able to retain their engagement for a longer period—much more work is needed in this aspect. </p> <p> "Mostly the families of athletes work out a way to be able to pay." </p> </div>

<div> <p> A debut writer has created history by claiming the $100,000 Victorian Literature Prize with a picture book—the first instance where a children’s book has secured this esteemed accolade. </p> <p> Author and artist Wanda Gibson’s book "Nukgal Wurra" <i> Three Dresses </i> Published by the University of Queensland, this work also claimed the $25,000 children’s prize for literature at the Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards, which were presented in Melbourne on Wednesday night. </p> <p> Gibson, who is 79 years old, resides in the Hope Vale Aboriginal community located in Far North Queensland and could not attend the event. However, her son Bruce collected the accolade on her behalf. During a telephone conversation from Queensland, Gibson expressed astonishment at the recognition her book has garnered. </p> <p> She mentioned, 'I wasn’t aware they include books in contests,' </p> <p> The great-grandmother, who boasts five children, 11 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren, never intended to become an author. However, around "12 or 13 years back" when she started engaging in weaving and painting, everything changed. She earned a diploma in visual arts in 2014 and soon after showcased her artwork. Following a partnership with a nearby Indigenous social business, representatives from the University of Queensland Press reached out to her about writing a picture book. </p> <p> Gibson never thought her work would result in securing one of Australia’s most prestigious literary awards. She expressed her astonishment, stating that upon discovering she had won the $25,000 category prize, she was left speechless. </p> <p> I called my son and told him, 'I'm trembling here.' He asked, 'What's wrong, Mom? Are you unwell?' I replied, 'I'm stunned because I received this award.'
