In the first-half we were in control, we were operating well, good phases and scoring some good tries – and the rest is history.” </p> <p> Asked what the Waratahs could have done to slow down the home side’s momentum, Sinclair lamented a botched lineout early in the second half and added they needed to control the tempo through better kicking. </p> <p> “It’s tough,” Sinclair responded to former All Black, Jeff Wilson. “Maybe it’s on the game controllers, thinking a bit more territory and plugging it in the corners. We wanted play our footy, but once they got on top of that was hard. </p> <p> “To be fair, we had our opportunities. Straight after half-time we went straight in their 22 with a lineout and we mucked it up and went down the other end. We can’t complain that we didn’t have our opportunities. The governing body has pressed Richmond borough council to increase this to 15 events for audiences of up to 82,000. </p> <img data-document-id="cms/api/amp/image/BB1lkGui" data-reference="image" src="https://img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/BB1lkGui.jpg"/> <p> However, should Richmond not bow to these requests, Mr Sweeney has insisted that relocation from Twickenham could very much be on the table. </p> <p> “There are plenty of places that would like to have us. Birmingham, Milton Keynes would love to have us there,” Mr Sweeney said on the <em> Business of Sport </em> podcast. </p> <p> “Part of the renovation from 2027 means we are in discussions with Richmond borough council to stage more non-rugby events. For us it is three [events] and we are only allowed one on a Friday. </p> <p> “We have had The Rolling Stones. <div> <p> For too long, Irish rugby has been mired in the here and now. The established policy has been: ‘Win what is in front of you and let the future look after itself.’ </p> <p> It has cost us. To the tune of 10 failed World Cup campaigns dating back to the inaugural competition in 1987, during which time Ireland have been unable to win a single knockout match. </p> <p> There have been plenty of highs in between tournaments, numerous titles won, regular victories over once vastly superior rugby nations and consistent placing at the previously unimaginable height of number one in the world rankings. </p> <img data-document-id="cms/api/amp/image/BB1ps7iH" data-reference="image" src="https://img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/BB1ps7iH.jpg"/> <p> But in terms of timing and preparation to hit maximum performance at the World Cup, Ireland have never managed it – coming closest in 2023 when they were beaten by another top-class team (New Zealand) on the day. </p> <p> Following that disappointment, the decision was taken to keep change to minor tweaks and, while it worked last year in terms of winning another Six Nations title to keep the supporters and IRFU accountants happy, it did little to future-proof against another failure in 2027. </p> <p> Moreover, despite the noteworthy Test win against South Africa last summer, some issues began emerging during the uncertain performances of the autumn season and have since become more pronounced throughout this year's inconsistent Six Nations tournament. </p> <p> In recent days, there has been significant introspection, yet no broad agreement has emerged except for an immediate requirement for substantial changes. </p> <p> The encouraging part is that we have almost two and a half years until the upcoming World Cup, and another bright side is that finally, there’s acknowledgment of the necessity for rejuvenation before it becomes overdue. </p> <p> Therefore, what are the areas causing concern, and which players might step up in time to provide World Cup solutions for 2027? </p> <p> There are numerous areas requiring focus, but here are five players to start with: </p> <img data-document-id="cms/api/amp/image/AA1wEGyX" data-reference="image" src="https://img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/AA1wEGyX.jpg"/> <h2 class="wp-block-heading"> FIVE TO RECEIVE PRIORITY TREATMENT IN IRELAND </h2> <h2 class="wp-block-heading"> 1. One such option could be Craig Casey, the small but talented player from Munster who has gained experience and demonstrated his capability; particularly evident in his quick movements towards the ruck and his swift distribution of the ball. </p> <p> Two more individuals need to be pinpointed and put through trials immediately, with Doak being the first among them. </p> <p> He has been around for several seasons now, and one feels that had he been with Leinster, Doak would likely be much farther ahead on the international path. </p> <p> Rather than focusing elsewhere, he aims to make an impact with inconsistent Ulster, supported by a forward line that hasn’t boasted a high-caliber front row since the 2012 team led by Johann Muller reached the European Cup final. </p> <p> However, this youngster is quite talented – he possesses the same versatile gameplay that earned his teammate recognition. Richie Murphy’s youngster began showcasing exceptional skills for Connacht early in the season, overwhelming opposing teams with his knack for finding openings and the lightning-fast pace reminiscent of Antoine Dupont. </p> <p> This opportunity was expected to result in a priority boarding pass for the Ireland team; however, there might have been hesitance due to his limited experience and stature. </p> <p> All concerns can now be laid to rest following a particularly dull Six Nations campaign for Irish attacking rugby. TOM AHERN </h2> <p> Ireland needs to stop dilly-dallying with Ahern. True, the Waterford native’s situation isn’t improving by being part of a Munster team that is far from where it should be. However, given how blatantly talented he is, it falls upon the national management to step in and integrate him into their plans. </p> <p> Standing at 6 feet 8 inches tall, his agility on the field combined with his inherent talent for football makes Ahern an excellent physical match for what Ireland requires in their defensive lineup. With Peter O'Mahony retiring, this moment presents itself as opportune to fully unleash Ahern’s potential. </p> <h2 class="wp-block-heading"> 4. TOM O’TOOLE </h2> <p> O'Toole has been around for some time but hasn't secured his spot in the national team yet. This situation has not improved due to injuries and suspensions leading up to this year's Six Nations championship. </p> <p> But he is needed – Tadhg Furlong and Finlay Bealham are both well into their 30s and Furlong’s injury profile is a concern. Tom Clarkson has potential but Ireland need several choices in such a key position as tighthead with O’Toole offering the best physical profile. SCOTT PENNY </h2> <p> The most pressing issue facing Ireland management is openside where they have no specialist for a clearly jaded Josh van der Flier. </p> <p> Nick Timoney and Will Connors have been in and out and the selectors do not appear convinced by John Hodnett. </p> <p> The closest in style to Van der Flier is Penny, who looks to have a game ideally suited to the step up to international level. The problem is his status as a long-standing fringe player at Leinster where he does not get the game-time his talents merit. </p> <p> It seems this would be right up David Humphreys' alley, who oversees Irish rugby – Ireland needs Penny to gain playing time, regardless of whether it’s with Leinster or elsewhere. </p> <h2 class="wp-block-heading"> AND ONE SURPRISE? <img data-document-id="cms/api/amp/image/AA1BRuGg" data-reference="image" src="https://img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/AA1BRuGg.jpg"/> <p> <b> Former All Blacks coach John Plumtree has hailed the talents of Jordie Barrett following his fine displays for Leinster this season. </b> </p> <p> The New Zealand star is currently on a short-term deal with the Irish province and featured in their narrow defeat to the Bulls last Saturday. </p> <p> Barrett has impressed since moving to Dublin and provided much-needed experience and quality in an understrength Leinster outfit against the Pretoria outfit. </p> <h2> Springbok v All Black </h2> <p> The centre was set to go head-to-head with Andre Esterhuizen this weekend after the Springboks powerhouse was selected at 12 for the Sharks, but the visitors have decided to rest the New Zealander. </p> <p> It was shaping up to be a mouth-watering subplot to the game, but Leinster are focusing on their Investec Champions Cup tie with Harlequins next weekend. </p> <p> Springboks lock RG Snyman is another big name to sit out this encounter as they will both play a key role in the Champions Cup round-of-16 contest in Dublin. </p> <p> That didn’t stop Plumtree, who knows Barrett well having worked with him at both the Hurricanes and All Blacks , from praising the All Blacks star. </p> <p> “I was chatting to Jason Holland (current All Blacks coach) this morning, and we were talking about just how good Jordie is,” he told reporters. </p> <p> “I thought he was huge against the Bulls. He has softer touches to his game, the ability to put players around him into space that few other players do. </p> <p> But he possesses remarkable physical strength and power. It’s clear to me just how fiercely competitive he is. In terms of collisions, he dominates completely, and his level of effort is extraordinary. </p> <p> <b> “We don’t recruit New Zealanders” – Jake White debunks the weakened Leinster theory. </b> </p> <p> Esterhuizen and Barrett previously clashed heads during a Rugby World Cup preparatory match between the Springboks and the All Blacks in August 2023, but their next encounter has been delayed somewhat. </p> <p> It's unfortunate for the game, but Leinster's stance is understandable as they've already secured a solid footing in the URE. </p> <p> They have the luxury of giving their key players some rest for this match, knowing confidently that nobody will surpass them atop the URC standings this weekend. </p> <h2> Barrett ‘immense’ </h2> <p> "His performance in the midfield last week was outstanding; he had a significant impact, and his effort level was remarkable. Despite the unexpectedly high temperatures in Pretoria, the amount of ground he covered was incredible," Plumtree noted additionally. </p> <p> The head coach of the Sharks might be pleased that the All Black isn’t participating this weekend and even made a joke suggesting he should return to Ireland along with many top Six Nations players who haven’t made the trip. </p> <p> “Jordie is a massive player for Leinster and a big threat. I wasn’t someone over here trying to prove something,” he said. </p> <p> “I was I guess more in a giving phase where I wanted to help develop players, I wanted to help develop coaches and develop a team.” </p> <p> <b> Scott Robertson and New Zealand Rugby address Richie Mo’unga ‘speculation’ as All Blacks boss reveals his wish ahead of 2027 Rugby World Cup </b> </p> <p> It is not an absolute guarantee that Mo’unga will return from Japan, given that he can continue to earn more money abroad and play for either Tonga or Samoa in 2027, but Robertson seems determined to bring him back home. </p> <p> Despite the setback in late 2024 after NZR failed to agree a deal with the fly-half for an early release, the All Blacks boss appears keen to see the 30-year-old in Super Rugby once again. </p> <p> “You want all your best players available,” Robertson told the <i> Rugby Direct </i> podcast. </p> <p> “That’s what it takes to win a Rugby World Cup. You keep connected with all of them, it doesn’t matter where they’re at. </p> <p> “I still get messages from the old players checking in. Sam Cane has had his time but he’s a prime example. He’s asking how everything is going in the off-season. </p> <p> “But yeah, you just want your best players.” </p> <h2> Robertson and Mo’unga connection </h2> <p> Robertson and Mo’unga combined in spectacular fashion when the duo worked together at the Crusaders as they dominated Super Rugby. </p> <p> And ultimately it is another reason why the playmaker may choose to return to New Zealand, where they could potentially link up once more. </p> <p> The 30-year-old admitted ahead of the series against England last year that seeing Robertson’s first ever All Blacks team being announced was making him yearn for a return to Test rugby. </p> <p> “I signed for three years with Toshiba and my intentions were, ‘yep, I’m going do the three years’,” the fly-half told <i> Stuff </i> in July 2024. </p> <p> “[But] obviously with ‘Razor’ [Robertson] coming along and saying he’d love to have me back home, it’s just given me another opportunity to think about where I’m at with my footy. </p> <p> “I obviously had a really successful year in my first year and I’m trying to weigh up the options of what would be best for my family, but also what would be best for my footy as well.” </p> <p> He commented, "When The All Blacks squad was recently announced, you can't help but feel a little FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out). You begin to ponder how it might feel to be part of the team competing against England this weekend." </p> <p> I'm nowhere near done with my football career. I feel as though I am at the peak of my abilities, so the idea of not being able to play for the top team in our nation is incredibly tough to accept.
