 During a courtesy visit to the Chairperson of the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area, Abdullahi Olowa, the President of the organization, Oluwayemisi Oluwole, conveyed this message. These details were included in a statement provided to The PUNCH newspaper on Wednesday.
 
 
 Oluwole highlighted that the purpose of the visit was to raise awareness regarding the difficulties elderly individuals in Lagos State encounter when trying to obtain comprehensive healthcare coverage.
 
 
 She observed that the Nigerian healthcare system lacks sufficient provisions for the increasing population of elderly individuals who are vulnerable to non-communicable diseases.
 
 
 She said, "Ibeju-Lekki boasts one of the largest populations of elderly individuals residing in rural regions and difficult-to-access locations within Lagos State. Nonetheless, Nigeria's healthcare and support infrastructure continues to be inadequately prepared for dealing with the challenges posed by an aging populace and related non-communicable diseases."
 
 
 Age Nigeria Foundation's campaign initiatives strive to guarantee that Nigeria's health care system caters to the specific requirements of its elderly demographic.
 
 
 The 'UHC Ready for an Aging World' campaign is a worldwide health advocacy effort led by HelpAge International. This project seeks to broaden the push for Universal Health Coverage to additional West African nations by the year 2030.

 60歳で定年を迎えた上田浩一さん（仮名・70歳）。ちょうどその頃、長男に初孫が生まれました。それ以来、最大の楽しみは孫の成長。何かにつけて「孫のために」という言葉が口癖になりました。70歳を迎えた今も働いているのは、そのためです。


 
 「少しでもたくさんお小遣いをあげたい。カッコいいじいちゃんでいたいじゃないですか（笑）」
 


 70歳になった今でも月23万円、手取りで18万円ほどの給与を手にしています。妻・洋子さん（仮名・67歳）との2人暮らしでは、毎月3万円ほど余るとか。そのすべてを「孫貯金」と称して、コツコツと貯めていました。


 実は浩一さんと洋子さんは、孫との時間を楽しみにしながら、65歳を過ぎたあたりから終活を進めていました。その中で話の中心になったのがお金のこと。自分たちの生活だけであれば年金だけで十分。しかし孫のことまで考えたら、働けるうちは働いた方がいいだろう。そう考え、70代になった今も精力的に働いていました。


 そんな孫ファーストの老後は、ある日、突然終わりを迎えます。冬の寒い日、自宅の風呂場で倒れた浩一さん。そのまま帰らぬ人となりました。いわゆるヒートショックによる心筋梗塞。突然の不幸に、洋子さんの悲しみは深く、なかなか現実を受け入れることができなかったといいます。


 時間だけが流れるなか、「いつまでもこのままではいけない」と、洋子さんは自らを奮い立たせます。その背中を押してくれたのも、かわいい孫の存在でした。まずは滞っていた手続きを次々とこなしていきます。そのなかにあったのが年金の手続き。年金受給者であれば、亡くなってから14日以内（厚生年金の場合は10日以内）に年金受給権者死亡届（報告書）の提出が必須です。浩一さんは厚生年金加入者だったので、洋子さんは遺族厚生年金の請求が行えるはずでした。ちなみに遺族年金の請求は、死亡から5年で時効となります。


 時間に余裕はあるものの、早い方がいいだろうと手続きを行うことにしました。終活について話をした際、遺族年金についても話題にあがっていました。洋子さんはどこかで「遺族年金があれば、万一のときに何とかなるだろう」と思っていたといいます。浩一さんが長年にわたって厚生年金に加入していたという安心感もありました。


 さらに浩一さんからは「年金の繰下げで年金は増えている」と聞かされていました。年金の繰下げは、受取開始時期を66～75歳までの間で遅らせることで、年金受取額が増額になる制度。1カ月遅らせるごとに0.7％増額となります。浩一さんの場合、亡くなる時点で44.1％の増額。65歳時点で「月18万円はもらえる」といっていたので、26万円弱に増えていたのです。

 遺族年金…期待と現実のギャップ
</h2>

 
 「夫は月に26万円はもらえるはずだったのだから、遺族年金はそれなりにもらえるだろう」
 
 。そんな確信に近いものを感じながら、洋子さんは遺族年金の請求手続きを進めます。しかし実際の遺族年金額は、想定外の少なさでした。


 
 「なぜ、こんなに少ないんですか？ 夫は70歳まで働いていたんですよ。その間、厚生年金にも加入していたのに」
 
 。説明を求めて訪れた年金事務所で、洋子さんは声を荒らげます。対応してくれた職員は、「年金のルール」について説明をしてくれました。


 ①遺族厚生年金の年金額は、死亡した人の老齢厚生年金の報酬比例部分の4分の3の額。


 ②ただし、65歳以上で老齢厚生年金を受け取る権利がある人の場合、「死亡した人の老齢厚生年金の報酬比例部分の4分の3の額」と「死亡した人の老齢厚生年金の報酬比例部分の額の2分の1の額と自身の老齢厚生年金の額の2分の1の額を合算した額」を比較し、高い方の額となる。


 ③さらに自分自身の老齢厚生年金は全額支給となり、遺族厚生年金は老齢厚生年金に相当する額の支給が停止となる。


 ④繰下げ受給の仕組みは遺族年金には適用されない。


 つまり遺族年金の計算をする場合、「浩一さんが65歳で老齢厚生年金を受け取ったら」がベースになるということ。浩一さんの場合、ベースとなる遺族厚生年金は8.4万円となります。さらに洋子さんには会社員時代があり、1.5万円ほどの老齢厚生年金を受け取ることができました。結果、遺族厚生年金は想像していたよりもずっと少ない、月6.9万円ほどになるということでした。


 
 ――そんな、ありえない
 


 そう思っても、ルールはルール。仕方がないこととはいえ、なかなか納得することは難しく、「何かの間違いではないか？」と何度も自問自答したといいます。遺族年金に対する期待が大きすぎたため、現実とのギャップにただ何とも言えない感情だけが心に広がりました。


 年金制度のルールは複雑で、時に厳しさを感じるものかもしれません。正しい理解があれば、洋子さんのようにどこか淡い期待を抱かずにすみます。

There was an instance when she descended too quickly after being released from Deschamps’s grasp. Despite these minor errors, she maintained a smile throughout, feigning nonchalance despite seeing their cumulative score diminish with every mistake.


 They ended their performance with a score of 67.32, placing them at seventh position, roughly 10 points short of the leading pair, Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara from Japan. Dejectedly, they skated off the ice. Securing a medal, let alone defending their championship title, now seems highly improbable.

 Data from Stats NZ shows there are almost 200,000 New Zealanders aged 65 or older reporting they are still in the workforce.

 Over-65s made up 10.3 percent of machinery operators and drivers, 8 percent of labourers, 7 percent of professionals and 9.1 percent of managers.


 Over 70, the numbers roughly halved. They were 4 percent of managers, and 3 percent of professionals, clerical and admin workers, sales workers, and 3.7 percent of labourers.


 Over 80, managers had the strongest showing, with 0.7 percent of the workforce in that age range.


 In total, there were 1257 people aged over 90 reporting that they were working.


 Council of Trade Unions chief economist Craig Renney said it was not clear whether the people reporting work in sectors such as labouring and machinery operation were actually undertaking physical activity, or whether they were monitoring and managing others.


 "There's a lot of people, particularly machine operators, who are the only people who know how to use this machine. As a consequence they're the last person standing in the shop who knows how to use the non-digital lathe."


 He said some people turned to driving buses, taxis or Ubers as a second career, particularly if they wanted more flexible hours or a different lifestyle.


 He said it was possible some of the people aged over 90 were working in a volunteer capacity, or could be the owner of a company.


 "They may not be in what we call significant amounts of labour-based employment."


 Renney said it used to be the case that big employers had systems that moved older workers on to lighter duties as they got older.


 "My father worked in a coal mine and couldn't be working on the face at 60 or 65 because you were a liability, you physically couldn't hack the job so you might get moved on to light duties somewhere else or you were there to train younger workers. We've sort of lost that as we've lost the very large employers."


 He said it was good that there was work for older people, provided they were working because they wanted to.


 "The real challenge here is if people are being forced to work because their incomes are inadequate but they still need to pay the rent because they've never been able to buy their house.


 "That is a sign of a failing welfare state because the pension isn't enough, they haven't built up enough KiwiSaver, they're forced to work at a time they probably don't want to. Lots of people want to work and get great enjoyment out of it but it should be a choice."


 The Office for Seniors older workers action plan said a third of the New Zealand workforce was aged over 50, and 50 percent of people aged 60 to 69 were employed.


 But it noted that these workers could have challenges finding and staying in paid work.


 It noted that Retirement Commission research found a third of people over 65 were working because they had to for financial reasons.


 "For an increasing number of people who do not own their own home or do not have significant retirement savings, continuing to work in some capacity past the age of 65 is a necessity.'


 Gareth Kiernan, chief forecaster at Infometrics, said it was notable that there was increasing workforce participation in the 65 to 69 year old age group.


 "And to a lesser extent in the 70 to 74, then it drops away pretty quickly after that."


 He said it made sense that a high proportion of people who remained in work were managers.


 "That's a relatively easy job from a physical point of view and experience is always useful."


 But he said it was interesting there was also relatively strong participation from machinery operations and drivers, as well as labourers.


 "I can envisage older people driving buses or taxis for a bit but labourers… that genuinely did surprise me. I wonder if what's coming through there is if I'm a manager or a professional or whatever and I hit 65 I can probably pretty much choose whether I want to keep working, if I don't and I have enough money for retirement, all good. It may well be that people continuing to work in some of the lower-skilled jobs literally do not have the choice, they still need money."


 He noted that discussions about raising the retirement age have pointed out that it may be harder for people in physical roles to continue past 65.


 "Do you start to have some differential recognising, yeah if you're a tradie or a labourer or whatever you physically might not be able to keep working, you've probably been harder on your body for the last 40-odd years anyway so on average you're in a less good physical state as well as in a job requiring more physical effort."


 In some other countries, if people choose to retire earlier, they could opt to receive a lower payment.


 "The problem with that is for the likes of labourers or tradies or whatever, they will have been on a lower income for rest of their lives anyway so it is continuing to make them worse off by giving them a lower retirement pension going forward. It almost reinforces potential systemic problems."


 Retirement Commissioner Jane Wrightson said it would be complex to make eligibility changes to NZ Super based on job types.


 "A better way could be changing settings such as introducing income-testing applied to selective age groups but that also adds complexities which would come at additional administration cost and could disincentivise people from working longer.


 "We know that any change to the age of eligibility would disproportionately disadvantage manual workers, carers and those they care for, and those with poor health, due to differences in savings, wealth and ability to remain in paid work after the age of 65. Women, Māori, and Pacific peoples are overrepresented in those groups. So extra support would be needed to support some people through to a later age of eligibility which would in turn reduce fiscal savings from raising the age. Political support for a stable long-term system is crucial."


 The Chief Economist at the New Zealand Initiative, Eric Crampton, suggested that some individuals aged 90 plus who claim they are employed might be providing inaccurate details.


 I believe some of them must be genuine. However, I wonder how many are actual versus just time-wasters.

 Whether you're turning 60, 70 or 80, everyone starts to feel 'old' at very different times.


 But our brains go through three distinct 'ageing peaks' throughout our lives, according to a new study.


 Experts have identified that levels of 13 proteins linked to brain ageing spike at 57, 70 and 78.


 This suggests that these specific age groups may be critical points where interventions can significantly aid in maintaining brain health for an extended period, according to them.


 The group examined the levels of approximately 3,000 proteins in the blood plasma of almost 5,000 Britons ranging from 45 to 82 years old.


 The analysis showed that 13 proteins closely associated with brain aging appear in three distinct peaks related to age at 57, 70, and 78 years old.


 A specific protein known as Brevican (BCAN) is linked to the beginning of dementia, stroke, and problems related to movement.


 Another protein, called GDF15, has also been linked to age-related diseases.

 The authors said that the peaks in these 13 proteins may reflect changes in human brain health at these specific ages.


 And these could be important times to consider interventions in the brain ageing process, they said, that could help delay the onset of diseases such as dementia.


 The research was led by a team from the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University in China.


 Writing in the journal Nature Ageing they warned that by 2050, it is estimated that the number of people aged 65 years and above will exceed 1.5 billion globally – highlighting the need for a deeper understanding of the ageing process.


 In the UK alone, nearly one million people have the condition, with numbers rising. It remains our biggest killer.


 'We found that the late fifth decade is a potential onset timepoint for brain ageing,' they said.


 'In addition, our study suggested that the seventh and late seventh decades are also essential time points in brain ageing.


 'These findings contribute to bridging essential knowledge gaps in clarifying the molecular mechanisms of brain aging, with substantial implications for the future development of… biomarkers for brain aging, as well as personalised therapeutic targets for subsequent age-related brain disorders.'


 The finding arrives only months following independent research that similarly identified specific periods throughout one’s lifespan when the body experiences the majority of aging—thus debunking the notion that this process happens steadily over time.

 In September, researchers from Stanford University found that age-related alterations such as decreased metabolic rate, aging skin, and heightened susceptibility to illnesses notably spike around ages 44 and 60.


 These alterations might result in gaining weight or experiencing more intense effects from consuming alcohol.


 Dr Michael Snyder, Professor of Genetics at Stanford University and senior author of the study, said: 'People assume everybody's kind of aging gradually. It turns out that most changes are not linear.'


 To offset the impact of these dramatic aging 'waves', the team suggests that people approaching the milestones of 44 and 60 exercise more often and adopt a healthier diet.


 The team analyzed data from repeated collections of blood and stool samples and oral, skin and nasal swabs from 108 healthy people between the ages of 25 and 75 across California over a median period of 1.7 years.


 During analysis, scientists noticed that 81 percent of the observed molecules including proteins and RNA changed in at least one wave.


 The team ultimately concluded substantial dysregulation occurring at two major periods — with the age of 44 causing the biggest shift, and 60 also producing a significant uptick.


 Dr. Steve Hoffmann, a computational biologist at Leibniz Institute on Aging in Germany told the Wall Street Journal: 'These studies probably align very well with the experiences we have ourselves, or heard from others who perceive a sudden decline in physiological fitness.'


 'Identifying and studying these factors should be a priority for future research,' said Dr Xiaotao Shen, a former Stanford Medicine postdoctoral scholar, and now an assistant professor at Nanyang Technological University Singapore.


 In people in their 40s, significant changes were seen in the number of molecules related to alcohol, caffeine and lipid metabolism; as well as shifts in markers related to cardiovascular disease, and skin and muscle aging.


 A similar but less pronounced 'wave' of aging was noted at age 60.


 It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, Dr Snyder said.

 WELCH, W.Va. (AP) — Veronica Taylor doesn't know how to turn on a computer, let alone use the internet.


 The 73-year-old can't drive and is mostly housebound in her mountainous and remote West Virginia community, where a simple trip to the grocery store can take an hour by car.


 New requirements
 that Social Security recipients access key benefits online or in person at a field office, rather than on the phone, would be nearly impossible to meet without help.

 “If that’s the only way I had to do it, how would I do it?” Taylor said, talking about the changes while eating a plate of green beans, mac and cheese and fried fish with a group of retirees at the McDowell County Senior Center. “I would never get nothing done.”

 The requirements, set to go into effect March 31, are intended to streamline processes and combat
 widespread fraud
 within the system, according to President
 Donald Trump
 and officials in his administration.


 They say that's why it's vital for people to verify their identity online or in person when signing up for benefits, or making a change like where the money is deposited.

 advocates
 say the changes will disproportionately impact the most vulnerable Americans. It will be harder to visit field offices in rural areas with high poverty rates. Often these are the same areas that lack widespread internet service.

 Many Social Security field offices are also being shut down, part of the federal government's cost-cutting efforts. That could mean seniors have to travel even farther to visit, including in parts of rural West Virginia.


 Donald Reed, who runs a local nonprofit that operates two senior centers, said he has serious concerns about the policy change, and how it’ll affect the people his group serves.


 “I’m not anti-Trump — let me say that,” he said. “I think the general public greatly supports looking for waste in government. I do not think the general public understands the consequences of the current actions of the government.”

 Poor, rural areas could be hardest hit
</h2>

 One in three people live in poverty in McDowell County, once
 one of the nation’s largest coal producers
 . Around 30% of the population receives Social Security benefits and 20% lack broadband access. People already face huge challenges in accessing basic needs like food and clothing.


 Non-profit groups like The Commission on Aging receive money from the federal government to provide rides to the grocery store, medical appointments and free lunch at the county senior center, and could in theory add a stop to the local Social Security office said Reed, who is the group’s director.


 But the transportation grant money is already not enough to meet the need. Last year, Reed ran out of money during the last three months of the fiscal year and had to dip into the Commission’s savings. This year, he said he won’t be able to do so.


 Then, last Friday, he found out the Commission had lost an almost $1 million grant he expected, again because of the federal government’s cost cutting.


 He had planned to use the money to rebuild one of the two county senior centers, an aging 1980s-era doublewide trailer with limited seating.


 “Once the money’s gone, you know, the money’s gone,” he said.

 A flurry of new rules, hard for seniors to follow
</h2>

 Seniors at the center gather each weekday for lunch. Usually, they might play bingo or cards. On this day, because of the presence of a reporter from The Associated Press, the conversation turned to politics.


 Many are Trump supporters. Every county in West Virginia supported Trump in three presidential elections.


 Yet all agreed that the recent flurry of executive orders had been difficult to follow, especially since
 the county’s last local newspaper shuttered,
 and they weren’t sure what effect they’d have on their lives.


 “I don’t understand a lot of the stuff that’s going on right now, and I just can’t pinpoint things together, you know,” said Brenda Hughes, 72, who said she usually goes to the Social Security office in person anyway because she said she’s found it difficult to get a hold of the call center. “But maybe it’s meant to be like that.”


 Mary Weaver, 72, said she doesn’t approve of Trump giving Elon Musk so much leeway to cut and change services, and she doesn’t see those measures helping McDowell County.


 “He gone run for president, and he’s going to get the presidency, but he’s going to let someone else tell him how to run the country?” she asked, criticizing Trump’s relationship with Musk.


 Other residents aren't concerned. Barbara Lester, 64, said she wishes she could sit down with Trump and Musk and tell them they’re doing a fantastic job.


 “And with all the money they’re saving from the fraud, they could afford to give their senior citizens an increase,” said Lester, who is retired from construction work.


 However, for Taylor, who relies mostly on rides from the deteriorating commission for her excursions, the modifications to Social Security might add yet another challenge.


 There are already many places she wants to go and can’t get to. None of her grandkids live nearby, her daughter lives in Roanoke, Virginia, and her 39-year-old son, who used to live in the Welch area near her, died. The walk from her house to the Social Security office is six miles.


 “If I ask people more than two times to take me somewhere, it’s like begging. And I don’t beg nobody to do nothing for me,” she said. “I’m independent like that. I don’t beg nobody for nothing."

 とはいっても、誰でも60歳で仕事が辞められるものではありません。60歳で仕事を辞めたい人は、どういうことをしておくべきでしょうか？


 <h2>
 1）住宅ローンは完済、教育費は別貯め
 </h2>
 一番避けたいのは、リタイア後も多額の固定費がかかること。リタイア後の基本生活費はできるだけコンパクトにしたいものです。


 まずは、住宅ローンの返済が60歳までに終わるようにしておきましょう。住宅ローンの返済が残っていると、家計の収支はかなり悪化します。退職金でローンを完済する計画もアウト。退職金はリタイア後の生活の基盤となるものです。現役時代に住宅ローンは完済しましょう。


 同様に、60歳を超えても子どもの教育費がかかる人も要注意です。教育費は予想以上にかかります。自分たちの老後のお金を教育費にあてることは厳禁です。最低でも学費分は自分たちの老後のお金とは別に貯めておきましょう。

 2）個人型確定拠出年金iDeCo等で年金上乗せ
 </h2>
 老後の生活の支えとなるのは公的年金（老齢年金）でしょう。60歳から75歳（※）の間で好きな時から年金が受給できます。65歳以降に年金を受け取る「繰り下げ受給」をすると、65歳で受け取るはずの基準額より1カ月あたり0.7％年金額が増額されます。


 ※昭和27年4月2日以降生まれの人、受給権発生日が平成29年4月1日以降の人が該当


 70歳まで繰り下げをすると42％、75歳までで82％も65歳受給時より年金額が増えます。生涯受け取れる年金ですから、長生きのリスクに備えるために、少しでも年金額を増やしておきたいところ。


 そのためには、私的年金を準備しましょう。私的年金で生活する期間を設け、公的年金の受給開始を遅らせるのです。年金額を増やすと、年金だけで生活できる可能性が高くなります。60歳でリタイアするなら、少なくとも、70歳までは私的年金等で生活費をまかない、70歳以降から公的年金を受給するようにしましょう。


 この私的年金として、税制メリットがある「個人型確定拠出年金（iDeCo）」を利用するとよいでしょう。年金の上乗せをしっかりしておくことが大切です。

 3）受給できる年金額を確認
 </h2>
 老後生活の収入は公的年金がメインとなります。その年金額を知っておかないと、リタイア可能かどうかも判断できません。将来の年金額を知るには、「ねんきんネット」を利用しましょう。年金記録を確認し、年金見込額を試算することができます。将来の働き方などで年金額の変化をシミュレーションすることもできます。


 毎年、誕生月に送られてくる「ねんきん定期便」に記入されているアクセスキーと基礎年金番号があれば、すぐに利用することができます（アクセスキーがなくても、基礎年金番号がわかれば利用できます。基礎年金番号がわからない場合は、ねんきん定期便から基礎年金番号を知ることも可能です）。


 2）で準備したiDeCoなどの個人年金を利用し、公的年金の受給を70歳以降にできそうな場合は、受給開始年齢と受給額を把握しておきます。

 4）基本生活費を把握

 次に、基本生活費以外に必要になりそうなお金を把握します。リタイア後に海外旅行に行きたい、月に一度は温泉旅行に行きたいなどの基本生活費とは別の費用。マイホームのリフォーム代なども予定があれば加算します。体が不自由になったら有料老人ホームに入りたいなどの希望がある場合は、必要な金額を試算しておきます。これらの老後のイベント費用の総額をだしてみましょう。


 最後に、医療費や介護の費用も考えておかなくてはいけません。予備費も含めて1人あたり2000万円は考えておきたいところ。これらの総額が60歳までに貯めるべき金額となります。

"This issue isn't likely to vanish. People are raising significant concerns comparing one country with another regarding their residency choices and potential tax obligations. These aren't idealistic queries; they're highly pragmatic.


 Founded in 2008, LIOS releases frequent articles covering topics related to living overseas, including issues like taxation and healthcare. According to Peddicord, website visits surged approximately 250% after the election, and this ongoing engagement has contributed significantly to "our most substantial increase in readership ever."


 Peddicord mentioned that around 80% of the LIOS audience consists of retirees, encompassing both those who have already retired and individuals preparing for retirement. The group releases an annual list each year.
