 and continued building improved versions of the Karma four-door plug-in hybrid sedan.
 
 
 Getting back to the Amaris; it’s a rather beautiful thing, with wide thighs and “swan doors” that will supposedly swing upwards to make getting in and out as easy as possible. The design cues are heavily influenced by its four-door sibling, the
 Revero
 , itself an evolution of the original Fisker Karma.
 
 
 It rides on 22-inch forged aluminum wheels with a clean-cut design that Karma calls “Constellation,” while the body is a combination of aluminum and carbon fiber. There’s also a clamshell hood up front and a pass-through spoiler at the rear that reduces drag and increases downforce.

 Under the skin, the Amaris is based on an evolution of the all-aluminum spaceframe that traces its roots to the Revero. This allows the small California company to speed up development and bring the swoopy coupe to the market quicker than if it had to do the chassis from scratch.
 
 
 What makes Karma’s new coupe stand out from the crowd, however, is its powertrain. Specs are still under wraps, but we know the Amaris will be an
 extended-range electric vehicle
 (EREV) that employs a four-cylinder gasoline engine sourced from BMW and an electric generator. While batteries and electric motors for wheel propulsion are included, specific information about them hasn't been released yet. This updated gasoline engine represents an improvement over the current three-cylinder 1.5-liter engine utilized by Karma.
 
 
 It’s the identical setup as in the
 RAM 1500 Ramcharger
 and the upcoming
 Scout SUV and pickup
 . The gas engine doesn’t power the wheels, it just turns a generator that sends juice to the battery pack. Then, the electric motors get power from the battery to propel the car.
 
 
 Karma Automotive stated that the Amaris will accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 3.5 seconds with a maximum speed of 165 mph. This performance is notably 0.7 seconds quicker than predicted for the upcoming Gysera electric sedan and one full second swifter than the Revero plug-in hybrid.
 
 
 Speaking of the two four-door models, Karma confirmed that the Gysera it showed last year will succeed the Revero. There’s some explaining to do here, though–the
 Gyesera
 was supposed to be a Revero-based all-electric sedan, but now Karma said it will switch to an EREV powertrain “in response to changes in the near-term market demand for EVs.” As a reminder, the soon-to-be-discontinued Revero, which traces its roots to the original Fisker Karma, will be replaced with the Gyesera which is a revised version of the Revero.
 
 
 Sales of the Karma Amaris coupe are slated to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026, followed by the
 Kaveya
 all-electric “super-coupe” in 2027 and the Ivara electric SUV in 2028. Before these, the performance-oriented
 Invictus
 will go on sale in the second quarter of this year, while the revised Gyesera EREV four-seater will arrive in the final quarter of 2025.

 中村史郎氏は1974年にいすゞ自動車に入社し、デザイナーとしての一歩を踏み出した。いすゞが乗用車部門から撤退した後、日産の立て直しのために送り込まれたゴーン氏に請われて移籍を決断。多くの名作を生み出している。


 今回の賞は、生涯をデザインに捧げたことを讃えて送られたものだ。デザイナーとしてだけでなく、デザインマネージャーとしての手腕も高く評価された。


 デザイナー生活50年の節目に受賞したのは二重にめでたいことだね。この先も創造への意欲をかき立て、現役デザイナーとして名作を誕生させてほしい!!

Carmakers Are Reinventing the Gear Shifter and Drivers Are Lost

 Sean O’Malley has driven hundreds of cars during his nearly four-decade career as a vehicle tester. But one day a couple of years ago he found himself in the seat of a Hyundai at a loss over how to get the car to move.


 O’Malley, senior test coordinator at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and his colleagues couldn’t find the gear shifter in the Ioniq 5 sport-utility vehicle. One of them finally spotted it tucked away behind the car’s steering wheel.


 “It was definitely not obvious where it was,” O’Malley said.


 Car shoppers, car renters and valets feel O’Malley’s pain. A proliferation of electronic controls have allowed car engineers to largely ditch the mechanical connections between the gear lever and the transmission. Disappearing are the familiar, bulky shifters typically mounted on the steering column or center console.


 “Once you eliminate that mechanical linkage, then anything goes,” said Paul Snyder, a former Ford designer who’s now chair of the College for Creative Studies’ transportation design program.

 Today, many cars come outfitted with small joystick shifters, dials, buttons and even touch screen gearshifts. The smaller, more-exotic designs free up interior space for phone chargers and cupholders. They also can flummox people when they get behind the wheel of a car they’ve never driven.


 On a trip to California, Linda Hoff, 65, rented a Nissan Rogue SUV that had a joystick-like gear selector. Hoff frequently rents different car brands but nonetheless couldn’t figure out how to reverse the car out of its spot.


 “I didn’t even know how to drive this damn car,” she said. “So I had to go back to the rental agency and say, ‘Is there a trick here?’” She was soon on her way after a tutorial.


 The Michigan resident said she understands that automakers are trying to come up with creative designs to stand out. But she said the lack of standardization complicates things.

 “When they’re all trying to do it and you’ve got to go out in the rental market, you’re just going nuts,” she said.


 Will Clayton, a 33-year-old Greenville, S.C. resident who works in finance, frequently rents cars when he travels for work. On one such trip, he was put off by the gearshift in a Chrysler Pacifica minivan: a silver dial that he thought was placed way too close to the radio’s volume knob. He wondered whether any user had tried to turn down the volume only to end up going in reverse.


 “I can’t think of any consumer push for a radical change in gear-shifters,” he said. “I’ve heard of reinventing the wheel. I have not heard of reinventing the shifter. Whose idea was this?”


 Chrysler declined to comment.


 Some carmakers are taking more liberties than others with the design freedoms that electronic shifters bring.

 Genesis, the luxury brand owned by South Korea’s Hyundai Motor, made what the company calls the Crystal Sphere for the GV60 electric sport-utility vehicle, which the company has described as a piece of automotive art. The glass ball sits in the center console and glows when the owner approaches the car—a bit like a fancy snow globe—rotating 180 degrees upside down when the vehicle is turned on to reveal a twist-knob shifter.


 Genesis’s European division last year put out a nearly four-minute video explaining how the orb works.


 In a statement, Genesis said the Crystal Sphere is to “enhance safety and to create an emotional connection with the driver” upon turning the vehicle on. The absence of engine noise from the EV makes it less intuitive to know when it is ready to drive, Genesis says.


 One driver said they’d put a reminder on a Post-it note to run an errand and stuck it in the console, partly touching the Crystal Sphere.


 “When I turned off the car, it grabbed the paper and pulled it inside,” they wrote in an online forum last summer. “Now when I turn on or off the car, I can hear the paper. Can’t really see it anymore.”


 One of the trendier configurations today are buttons located under the vehicle’s infotainment system to select gears. The concept actually dates back decades, including when Ford in the 1950s touted its “Teletouch” button-selector on the steering wheel of the Edsel.


 “It puts shifting where it belongs!” one Edsel ad said.


 EV maker Tesla lets owners of some models shift into park or reverse on their vehicles’ touch screens, though a set of tiny buttons can still be used when activated.

 Jeff Tropeano, a 43-year-old Colorado resident, said the touch screen shifter on his Model S Plaid took some getting used to, but now he rarely thinks about it. Tropeano’s wife doesn’t have as easy of a go on the rare occasion she uses the car.


 “When she gets into my car she’s like, ‘I just don’t know what to do,’” he said.


 Some innovations have presented safety risks. Nearly a decade ago, federal regulators declared that a Chrysler dial shifter linked to numerous rollaways and a fatality to be “not intuitive” and increased the potential for unintended gear selection.


 More recently, Consumer Reports ran into trouble with a Rivian R1S electric SUV. While driving on a highway, one tester for the magazine attempted to turn off the vehicle’s adaptive cruise control in slow traffic, but her maneuver caused the SUV to shift into reverse. Rivian said it updated software to fix the problem.


 Even if the ever-expanding universe of shifters is tripping up drivers, patience is the key, said O’Malley, the IIHS tester.


 “It’s all about familiarity,” he said. “Once you know where something is in your car, it’s not that stupid anymore.”

You can choose standard 20-inch alloy wheels, with an option for larger 21-inch wheels on the top-tier, performance-oriented SQ6 e-tron model.


 Like its exterior, the interior of the 2025 Audi Q6 e-tron ushers the brand into a new era of design and technology. The cabin exudes a typical Audi vibe, where minimalism is enhanced by premium materials and impeccable build quality. The Q6 e-tron truly shines thanks to its latest-generation MMI infotainment system.


 Currently equipped with three displays as standard for the Philippine market, the updated MMI system utilizes Android Automotive as its core operating platform. This setup incorporates an 11.9-inch digital instrument panel along with a 14.5-inch center entertainment touch screen. A third screen positioned at the front passenger seat replicates the primary system’s functions. Additionally, passengers have the ability to enjoy video playback even when traveling; nonetheless, to avoid distracting the driver, this passenger screen comes with an Active Privacy Mode designed to obscure its contents from being seen by the driver.


 Consequently, the infotainment system leads the pack when it comes to being responsive, intuitive, and functional. It provides seamless connectivity with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto options along with an upscale Bang & Olufsen audio setup. Additional standout elements consist of dynamic ambient LED lighting which responds to indicators and safety warnings for enhanced alertness.


 Additionally, the Q6 e-tron comes equipped with a comprehensive set of sophisticated driver assistance features as part of the standard package. Included among these are full-range adaptive cruise control, lane departure warnings, lane keeping assist, blind spot detection, rear traffic alerts when reversing, automated emergency braking, and a surround view monitoring system. The operation of these safety technologies is clearly showcased via the innovative augmented reality heads-up display—a technology most effectively appreciated through direct experience.


 At present, only one powertrain variant of the 2025 Audi Q6 e-tron will be available in the Philippine market: the model equipped with a single motor driving the rear wheels (RWD). This particular setup generates 326 hp and delivers 485 Nm of torque, allowing acceleration from 0 to 100 kph in merely 6.6 seconds. The vehicle comes fitted with a 100 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, giving it an estimated WLTP range of around 640 kilometers.


 The Q6 e-tron, constructed using a specialized electric vehicle platform known as Premium Platform Electric (PPE), emphasizes agility and rapid charging abilities. This model boasts a Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) system with an optimized weight balance towards the back for enhanced maneuverability. Additionally, it incorporates a cutting-edge 800-volt technology enabling ultra-fast DC charging of up to 270 kW and efficient AC charging capacity of up to 11 kW. The PPE platform was jointly developed by Audi and Porsche under the umbrella of the Volkswagen Group, ensuring that the Q6 e-tron delivers exceptional performance and driving satisfaction.


 The SQ6 e-tron stands out further with its enhanced capabilities thanks to the dual-motor all-wheel-drive system. This high-performance version boasts 509 horsepower and 855 Newton meters of torque, accelerating from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in merely 4.3 seconds. Additionally, it includes adaptive air suspension as a standard feature, providing a wider array of options for both handling and comfort settings.

 Similar to most car lovers, May admires the power, aesthetics, and capabilities of the Porsche Carrera GT. However, he believes that its inadequate safety features should be a reason to exclude it from your top choices.


 “During my time in the automotive sector, the Porsche Carrera GT has been one of the most daring vehicles produced by the brand,” he stated. “Despite its exceptionally potent 5.7-liter engine, I find that operating this car seems quite unfiltered, particularly due to its formidable V10.”


 The Carrera GT may not be suitable for novices as it lacks crucial safety features such as traction control and ABS. Given how small the room for error is, both experienced and skillful drivers would likely find this vehicle difficult to handle.

 1960年代から80年代にかけて活躍した貴重なラリーカーのコレクションが博物館を抜け出し走行を披露した。モータージャーナリストの藤原よしおがリポートする。
 
 
 2022年にイタリア・トリノ自動車博物館で開催された、ジーノ・マカルーソ財団の所有する貴重なラリーカーを集めた企画展『THE GOLDEN AGE OF RALLY』。その模様については本誌2023年1月号で大矢アキオさんのレポートを紹介しているが、その中から選ばれた珠玉の6台が来日。富士モータースポーツミュージアムにおいて2024年11月27日から2025年4月8日まで開催されている『THEGOLDEN AGE OF RALLY IN JAPAN』で公開されているのをご存知だろうか？
 
 
 これはトヨタ自動車の豊田章男会長とジーノ・マカルーソ財団のモニカ・マイランダー・マカルーソ代表との交流によって実現した企画展で、元ジラール・ペルゴのCEOであり、若かりし頃はフィアット-アバルト・ワークスのコドライバーとしてラリーを戦った経験をもつマカルーソが生前に温めていた「いつか自身のコレクションを通じて日本にラリーの歴史を伝えたい」という想いを受け継いだものだ。

 展示されているのは、モーリス・ミニ・クーパーS（1967年フィンランド1000湖ラリー優勝車）、フィアットX1/9アバルト・プロトティーポ（1974年ジーロ・ディタリア・アウトモビリスティコ出場車）、ランチア・ストラトスGr.4（1976年ジーロ・ディタリアなど出場車）、フィアット・アバルト131ラリーGr.4（1978年のウェールズラリーなど入賞車）、ルノー5ターボ（1981年モンテカルロ・ラリー優勝車）、アウディ・クワトロGr.B（1982年1000湖ラリー、サンレモ・ラリー優勝車）の6台。いずれも近代のラリーの歴史を語る上で欠かせないヒストリーをもつ個体ばかりである。
 
 
 それだけでも十分にすごく、ラリー好きならずとも是非見ておくべき企画展なのだが、なんとさる1月25日に改修中の富士スピードウェイの第3セクターを舞台に、サプライズの走行テストが行われたのだ！
 
 
 聞けば、これまでも定期的にエンジン始動を行ってきたが、全車動態保存するという同財団のポリシーに則り、走行テストが実現したのだそうだ。無論、そうした趣旨ゆえに走行はゆっくりとしたものだったが、それでも動く姿とエキゾーストノートは感動的で、在りし日のラリーシーンに想いを馳せることができた。

 . This is how you build an exposed-metal wedge car. It's called the Peralta S, and it's built by GFG Style, the Italian design firm launched in 2015 by the famous designer Giorgetto Giugiaro and his son, Fabrizio.

 The body is made with hand-bent, mirror-polished aluminum that stretches across the length of a car in an unbroken arc. The only parts of the car that aren't made from aluminum are the side sills, front spoiler, and rear diffuser, which are all made from exposed carbon fiber.


 Rather than using traditional doors (boring), the Peralta S has a huge front-hinged canopy that extends upward, giving way to the car's cabin (cool). The out-there design doesn't stop there. Rather than use traditional windows, which would have broken the car's shape, the Peralta S has a huge gullwing-style window on each side.


 According to GFG Style, the Peralta draws inspiration for its styling from the 1972 Maserati Boomerang concept, which is fitting, given that Giorgetto Giugiaro designed that car too. The one-off was commissioned by the Mexican car collector Carlos Peralta and two sons, who gave the car its name.


 Beneath the wild design, the Peralta S draws inspiration from the
 Maserati MC20
 That refers to a mid-engine, rear-wheel drive configuration delivering 621 horsepower and 538 pound-feet of torque from a bi-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine.
