Its next vehicle, the A390, is arguably more important, as it’s the brand’s first bespoke EV, designed to appeal to Porsche Macan EV buyers, promising aggressive styling and a driving experience to match. </p> <p> It’s around five inches shorter and four inches lower than a Tesla Model Y, straddling the line between what we would call a crossover and a hatchback. It’s a four-door model with a liftback rear, and while it borrows design cues from the A110 sports car , it also shows where the brand’s design language is headed next. </p> <img data-document-id="cms/api/amp/video/AA1FHHOb" data-reference="video"/> <p> It shares its AmpR Medium platform with cars like the Renault Megane E-Tech or the Nissan Ariya , but it gets a bespoke suspension setup and much quicker steering. It features hydraulic bump stops that provide both improved comfort and better handling response. With a 49/51 weight distribution, Alpine chose to equip it with four-corner 365-millimeter rotors with six-piston calipers on the front. </p> <p> DC fast charging at up to 190 kilowatts is enough for a 15 to 80% charging time of under 25 minutes, and its onboard charger includes vehicle-to-load (V2L) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) functionality. Alpine had earlier declared its intention to enter the U.S. market in 2027; however, it remains uncertain whether this strategy is still viable due to the introduction of new import tariffs and generally unfavorable EV policies under the Trump administration. </p> <p> Alpine also mentioned plans to introduce bigger models exclusively for the U.S. market. Therefore, it remains uncertain whether the A390, manufactured in France, would have been distributed in the United States regardless. The forthcoming model adds further ambiguity. Electric substitute for the A110 The sports car was set to be sold in the United States, but if the brand decides it’s not financially viable to start selling vehicles here currently, Alpine will probably stay as an exclusively European brand. </p> </p>

Everyone's got one. GMC spun off the Hummer into its own thing, Jeep revived the Wagoneer as its own brand, and Chevy is reportedly preparing to spin Corvette into a standalone brand. For that matter, go to a Formula 1 race in Italy, and you’ll see endless seas of Ferrari red. </p> <p> Partly that’s because Ferrari is the most successful team in Formula 1 history, with more driver championships, constructor championships, and race wins than any other team. Partly that’s because of history. Ferrari is easily Formula 1’s longest-standing team. But mostly it’s because of a decision the late Enzo Ferrari – the perfect example of an entrepreneur who finds success by following his passion, and in the process connects with customers who vibe with it – made in 1947. </p> <p> We’ll get back to that in a moment. </p> <p> I don’t have millions in disposable cash lying around, but even so, I can engage with most iconic brands. Apple, Coke, Nike? I buy their products. Luis Vuitton, Gucci, Hermes? I could purchase pretty much anything they make. Especially if I decide eating isn’t a priority. </p> <p> Ferrari? No, not even if I had the means. Sure, if I had the cash I could walk in and plunk down $250,000 to $300,000 for an entry-level Ferrari. </p> <h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-where-passion-meets-purpose"> Where Passion Meets Purpose </h2> <p> However, if you were interested in getting one of those new $900,000 SF90 XX Stradales, chances are you wouldn't be able to get one unless you had an established history with the brand—meaning you likely owned several Ferraris before. As such, you probably wouldn’t have been placed on the allocation list. </p> <p> Hermes? Tiffany? Mercedes? Go ahead, indulge yourself. Purchase as many scarves, rings, and cars as your heart desires. </p> <p> But not Ferraris. </p> <p> Clearly, exclusivity enhances the brand. Ferrari's earnings reached 1.6 billion euros. in the past quarter with year-over-year sales up more than 11 percent at 6.46 billion euros. Ferrari stock is up approximately 150 percent since 2019. By comparison, F1 automaker Mercedes’s stock is flat, Alpine Renault is down, and Aston Martin is significantly down over the same period. With just shy of 5,000 Ferrari employees, that’s 1.296 million euros in revenue per employee. All that from selling just 13,600 cars a year. </p> <p> Success story? Absolutely. But when Enzo decided to start selling cars, his primary goal wasn’t to build a car company. </p> <h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-virtuous-circle"> A Virtuous Circle </h2> <p> He started selling cars so he could fund his race team. Race teams typically lose money, or at best break even. Since money buys speed, any extra money goes into making the car faster. Enzo poured profits from selling cars into building a better race team, and a virtuous cycle was created. Car sales grew as Ferrari became more successful on the track, which meant more money could be put into the race team, which meant even more on-track success. </p> <p> Just like that, Enzo had created a relatively unique marketing model. Ferrari doesn’t advertise. You’ll never see a print, broadcast, or digital ad. The race team – and its millions in ancillary merchandise, a not inconsiderable marketing tool – is its sole means of marketing. </p> <p> As a result, Ferrari has also created that rarest of breeds: a profitable race team. </p> <p> In 2022, the race team earned $50 million on $500 million in revenue, and the brand is valued at nearly $4 billion. Granted, that’s also because Formula 1 instituted a cost cap, limiting the amount teams can spend. Even if Ferrari wanted to spend that $50 million on buying more speed, it can’t. In short, marketing isn’t a cost center. For Ferrari, marketing is a profit center. </p> <p> Enzo wasn’t the first automaker to use racing to promote his brand. In 1904, for example, Henry Ford set a world speed record on a frozen lake. That achievement became a staple in Ford ads. </p> <p> But Enzo was arguably the first – and inarguably the most successful – automaker to fund his race team through car sales. Hyundai Unveils $7.6B Electric Vehicle Plant in Georgia as Trump Announces Tariffs

Hyundai will be spared from those tariffs on its U.S.-made vehicles. Trump praised the South Korean automaker on Monday, saying its American investments are “a clear demonstration that tariffs very strongly work.” </p> <img data-document-id="cms/api/amp/image/AA1BJ8vH" data-reference="image" src="https://img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/AA1BJ8vH.jpg"/> <p> Hyundai began producing EVs just shy of six months ago at its sprawling manufacturing plant in southeast Georgia. Karma Automotive Aims to Debut a Luxurious Extended-Range Coupe

That’s the small company that picked up the pieces after Fisker ’s first bankruptcy and continued building improved versions of the Karma four-door plug-in hybrid sedan. </p> <p> Getting back to the Amaris; it’s a rather beautiful thing, with wide thighs and “swan doors” that will supposedly swing upwards to make getting in and out as easy as possible. The design cues are heavily influenced by its four-door sibling, the Revero , itself an evolution of the original Fisker Karma. </p> <p> It rides on 22-inch forged aluminum wheels with a clean-cut design that Karma calls “Constellation,” while the body is a combination of aluminum and carbon fiber. This allows the small California company to speed up development and bring the swoopy coupe to the market quicker than if it had to do the chassis from scratch. </p> <p> What makes Karma’s new coupe stand out from the crowd, however, is its powertrain. Specs are still under wraps, but we know the Amaris will be an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) that employs a four-cylinder gasoline engine sourced from BMW and an electric generator. While batteries and electric motors for wheel propulsion are included, specific information about them hasn't been released yet. This updated gasoline engine represents an improvement over the current three-cylinder 1.5-liter engine utilized by Karma. </p> <p> It’s the identical setup as in the RAM 1500 Ramcharger and the upcoming Scout SUV and pickup . The gas engine doesn’t power the wheels, it just turns a generator that sends juice to the battery pack. Then, the electric motors get power from the battery to propel the car. </p> <p> Karma Automotive stated that the Amaris will accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 3.5 seconds with a maximum speed of 165 mph. This performance is notably 0.7 seconds quicker than predicted for the upcoming Gysera electric sedan and one full second swifter than the Revero plug-in hybrid. </p> <p> Speaking of the two four-door models, Karma confirmed that the Gysera it showed last year will succeed the Revero. There’s some explaining to do here, though–the Gyesera was supposed to be a Revero-based all-electric sedan, but now Karma said it will switch to an EREV powertrain “in response to changes in the near-term market demand for EVs.” As a reminder, the soon-to-be-discontinued Revero, which traces its roots to the original Fisker Karma, will be replaced with the Gyesera which is a revised version of the Revero. </p> <p> Sales of the Karma Amaris coupe are slated to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026, followed by the Kaveya all-electric “super-coupe” in 2027 and the Ivara electric SUV in 2028. Before these, the performance-oriented Invictus will go on sale in the second quarter of this year, while the revised Gyesera EREV four-seater will arrive in the final quarter of 2025. </p> </p>

Its first EV, the SU7, has been an absolute hit in its home turf of China. CEOs of American car manufacturers, like Ford's Jim Farley, love the SU7 too, and that's kind of ironic considering that you can't even buy one stateside. </p> <p> It turns out that the SU7 has been selling so well that it's even outpaced EV sales by most U.S. automakers for 2024, both comparatively here and in China itself. This was first pointed out by tech news site CCN , bit we dug into the actual numbers to be sure. Not only did the brand smash that record and raise it to 120,000, but it closed out 2024 with a whopping 136,854 units sold. Keep in mind that this was the first year that the SU7— <em> Xiaomi's first-ever car </em> —was delivered en masse in China. </p> <p> Let's take a look at some order books to gauge just how impressive that figure really is. Specifically, Ford and General Motors, which both sell EVs in China. </p> <p> Ford's only EV in China for 2024 is the Mustang Mach-E. The "street fight," as Farley puts it, is one being lost by Ford, as it sold only 999 units of the Mach-E last per figures from <em> Car News China </em> . </p> <p> GM, which sells cars in China under its Buick, Cadillac, and Chevrolet brands, sold 69,403 units across all three marques. </p> <p> Now, it's worth noting that separately (and excluded from these counts), GM's joint partnerships with Baojun sold 33,630 units and its SAIC-Wuling 602,952. So GM is doing better there. But under its own banner, not so mich. </p> <p> If Xiaomi's overtake in China's market wasn't enough, these numbers hit home in the U.S. as well. </p> <p> Ford sold just over 97,000 EVs in the U.S. last year. That includes the Mustang Mach-E (which was the second best-selling EV in the U.S. behind the Tesla Model Y ), F-150 Lightning, and E-Transit models. General Motors sold 114,400 , which includes a broader range of domestic models, including the Chevy Blazer, Equinox and Silverado EVs, as well as the Cadillac Lyric and Optiq, plus the GMC Hummer and Sierra EVs. </p> <p> Perhaps even more impressive is that Xiaomi sold more EVs in China than just about any other automaker that sells in both its home market and the U.S. This includes, Audi, BMW, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Polestar, Toyota, Volkswagen, and Volvo—the only two exceptions? Tesla and Volkswagen. </p> <h2> A Meteoric Rise For Xiaomi </h2> <img data-document-id="cms/api/amp/image/AA1BpqWO" data-reference="image" src="https://img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/AA1BpqWO.jpg"/> <div class="source-title"> Photo by: Xiaomi </div> <p> Xiaomi's tech-packed SU7 has been an absolute hit, and a starting price of under $30,000 means that consumers are lining up to buy one of their own. And limited-production trims like the SU7 Pro are completely sold out for the rest of 2025 . To put that into perspective, Xiaomi company officials have previously said that the company's order books have 150,000 vehicles in queue for delivery. </p> <p> The automaker also just hit a record milestone of 200,000 delivered SU7s. </p> <p> In November, Xiaomi hit its first 100,000 milestone in just 229 days since the first delivery. That alone is <em> extremely </em> impressive. For comparison, that's quite literally half the time it took Tesla to sell the same amount of Model Ys . The second 100,000? 119 days—and that's nearly half the time it took Xiaomi to sell its first 100,000. </p> <h2> Hard To Compete </h2> <p> China's EV market, as huge as it may be, is becoming increasingly difficult to compete in. Not only are there more than 130 different EV brands in China, but there's so much competition that automakers are forced to innovate and create cars that consumers want to buy. </p> <p> The rest of the world? Well, automakers don't exactly work like that. Markets get what they get, and that attitude has played a huge part in China's domestic automakers soaring ahead of even the most prestigious luxury brands out there. Companies have since shifted their strategies for China in an attempt to gain more market share , but that's an uphill battle for most at this point. </p> <p> The success of companies like Xiaomi underscores a bigger shift in the global automotive landscape. Not only are China's automakers meeting their domestic demand, but international markets are becoming clear targets for China to set itself up as a global automotive powerhouse. </p> <p> Now if Xiaomi found a way to venture into the U.S. market without sky-high tariffs, domestic automakers could be in for some trouble .
