 As he strolls along the shoreline, the youth frequently encounters cast-off objects and litter floating on the water, serving as eerie indicators of humanity’s disregard.
 
 
 Deeply troubled by what she witnessed, the girl conveyed her sorrow and reflections in an article entitled "Our Ocean in Agony," which quickly rose to the top of a local online platform.
 
 
 The sea has always been a precious bounty close to my heart. The distinct ebb and flow, the varied aquatic universe beneath the waves, with fishes gliding gracefully through the waters — it’s an unparalleled natural wonder.
 
 
 "Nonetheless, an unforeseen event occurred over the past several years — the seas, which hold my deepest affection, are dying gradually. Each time I visit the shore, it’s now routine for me to spot plastic bottles, straws, and packaging drifting on the water as though they were specters," penned the 17-year-old.
 
 
 Her entry into E-Magz, a journal published by the Indonesian Teachers Association at Pacitan Teachers Training and Education Institute, resonated strongly with the editorial team. They recognized her work as the Best Article for the February 2025 issue.
 
 
 Although her piece depicts a grim image of the ocean's suffering, Iris Sofea still holds hope.
 
 
 She thinks that through increased understanding and a change in perspective, the harm done to the ocean could potentially be undone.
 
 
 "The alterations each individual can effectuate, irrespective of their magnitude—such as consuming fewer resources, repurposing goods, or merely disseminating information—can significantly aid our efforts. It’s crucial we take action immediately, lest all seas become casualties of ecological crises from which recovery may prove impossible," she asserted.
 
 
 Iris Sofea was among six students from Keningau Vocational College (KVC) who left a notable mark on environmental advocacy by having their articles published in a local English-language magazine.
 
 
 The February issue of E-Magz focused on Waste Awareness Day.
 
 
 Students from different vocational programs like early childhood education, cosmetology, construction technology, and electrical technology utilized their platforms to highlight the detrimental impacts of waste on Earth, with a focus on oceans and natural environments.
 
 
 Their pieces promote group efforts to minimize single-use plastics, utilize recycled materials, and implement eco-friendly waste-management techniques.
 
 
 The other contributing students were 17-year-old Rosselina Senora Ungkak, Jescyleo Jesimon and Jason Robert Sopining, both 18, Nur Qamariah Hasmeddy, 19, and Siti Nur Hanisah Omar Hashim, 20.
 
 
 KVC director Lumang Lang called the students’ achievement a testament to the power of education and youth engagement in addressing global environmental challenges.
 
 
 “He mentioned that with the guidance and editorial assistance from their committed teachers, these students managed to write their articles in English and send them to E-Magz, where only six chosen pieces are showcased per issue.”

 Researchers have set a new efficiency world record for converting sunlight into electricity using transparent solar cells.


 The breakthrough, made by an international team from the CitySolar project, is a huge boost for
 renewable energy
 , allowing entire skyscrapers to serve as power stations by transforming their windows into solar panels.

 ‘miracle material’ perovskite
 The researchers managed to attain an efficiency rate of 12.3 percent, which is nearly equivalent to that of commercially available solar cells.


 "Transparent solar cells might represent the next significant advancement in integrated architectural energy systems," stated Professor Morten Madsen from the University of Southern Denmark, a leading researcher involved in this breakthrough development.

 Often imagined as the crown jewel of future megastructures, a Dyson swarm—an orbiting fleet of solar collectors around the Sun—has long been considered a potential key to unlocking interstellar-scale energy. But a new scientific study suggests that building such a structure could come at a devastating cost: making Earth uninhabitable.


 While Dyson swarms are typically relegated to science fiction and theoretical engineering, researchers are now turning the idea into a subject of real planetary climate modeling. A recent paper
 published in
 Solar Energy Materials and Solar Cells
 explores just how a solar-saturating megastructure could affect Earth’s climate. The answer is sobering: a full Dyson swarm could raise the planet’s temperature by 140 degrees Kelvin, enough to boil oceans and erase all known life.

 A grand design for civilization-level energy
</h2>

 Originally proposed by physicist Freeman Dyson in 1960, the concept of enclosing a star with energy-collecting satellites has captivated imaginations for decades. In theory, such a structure would allow a Type II civilization on the Kardashev scale to capture most or all of its star’s energy output—an estimated 386 yottawatts in the case of our Sun.


 Instead of building an impossibly rigid shell—a classic “
 Dyson sphere
 ”—the more plausible version is a
 
 Dyson swarm
 
 : countless solar collectors orbiting at various distances, built gradually from materials mined in the solar system.


 But until now, few studies have asked a critical question:
 What happens to the planets left inside that swarm?

<h2>
 Trapping the Sun: a thermal nightmare for Earth
</h2>

 Physicist
 
 Ian Marius Peters
 
 of the Helmholtz Institute Erlangen-Nürnberg set out to model the environmental consequences of such a megastructure. His results, presented in the new study, reveal that trapping and redirecting solar energy at this scale doesn’t come without consequences.

 Dyson swarm
 
 placed just beyond Earth’s orbit would dramatically alter the balance of
 solar radiation
 , pushing Earth’s global average temperature up by 140 K. That level of warming would vaporize oceans, collapse atmospheric dynamics, and render the planet completely uninhabitable.


 The conclusion is stark: even with perfect energy-harvesting efficiency, Earth cannot coexist with a fully operational Dyson swarm unless it’s very carefully engineered—and very far away.

 Is there a compromise?
</h2>

 Peters explores alternative scenarios, including a partial swarm placed at about 2.13 AU from the Sun—just past Mars. This configuration would allow the structure to harvest 15.6 yottawatts, or roughly 4% of the Sun’s total output, while raising Earth’s temperature by less than 3 K—comparable to the impact of modern-day global warming.


 But even this compromise would require
 
 1.3 × 10²³ kilograms of silicon
 
 —a quantity that surpasses the total crustal silicon available on Earth. Harvesting it would likely mean mining Mercury or asteroids at an industrial scale that dwarfs any current human endeavor.

 The study underscores a crucial and often overlooked truth: technological scale has ecological consequences. The dream of

 One easy solution to cut back on plastic waste is to simply reuse your existing plastic bags. But is it actually safe to use zip-top plastic bags more than once, and if so, what’s the best way to properly clean them to extend their life? We put these questions and more to the folks at Ziploc, and the good news is that, yes, you can absolutely reuse their plastic bags.


 “Because Ziploc brand bags are made with high-quality materials that are strong enough to be used again, our bags can be reused several times,” a spokesperson told us.

 How to Clean a Plastic Bag
</h2>

 While it’s safe to reuse plastic bags, you’ll want to clean them between uses for sanitary purposes and to reduce any lingering odors. Cleaning a zip-top bag is as simple as adding warm water and dish soap, sealing the zipper and gently swishing the soapy water around inside, the Ziploc representative said.


 You will want to be careful to not be too aggressive with this process. Avoid turning the bag inside out, as this could damage the seams. Breaking the seams would, of course, make the bag less effective and will shorten its life.


 “Rinse thoroughly, shake out excess water and prop the bag open to dry completely before reusing,” Ziploc told us. You don’t need to buy anything extra to dry your bags; simply use your dish rack or even chopsticks to keep the bags open and allow for some air flow. I like to use magnetic bag clips and dry them on the side of my refrigerator.

 How to Extend the Life of a Plastic Bag
</h2>

 Properly cleaning and drying your plastic bags is one of the best ways to extend their life. Be sure to handle the bags carefully to avoid tears or punctures. Depending on what you store inside the bags, you can reuse them several times. However, there are some times you’ll want to dispose of a plastic bag after one use.


 “We do not recommend reusing any bags that have held raw meat, fish, eggs or potentially allergy-triggering foods, etc., as that may become a food safety issue,” the Ziploc spokesperson said. They added that once the bag goes into the freezer, there should be no impact on the life of that bag.


 Aside from ditching bags used for raw meats and common food allergens, very acidic ingredients like tomato sauce can cause stains and shorten the life of any plastic product, including bags.

 Plastic Bag Alternatives
</h2>

 If you are ready to say goodbye to plastic bags altogether, there are quite a few affordable options. Silicone pouches and bags have gained popularity in recent years. Ziploc Endurable is a line of silicone pouches and containers that are designed to go from freezer to oven (up to 425°F) to table. You can even clean them in the dishwasher. Other similar reusable bag options include (re)zip, Stasher and Ello. You can also use Bee’s Wrap, which is not only reusable but also compostable.


 All of these products are great alternatives to plastic bags, but they do come with a higher price tag. Consider other washable storage vessels like Mason jars or glass storage containers. Mason jars and many glass storage containers are safe in the freezer, but you should always be careful with strong fluctuations in temperature with these types of containers, as they could break.

 Whatever product you use for storage, whether it’s a common plastic bag or a speciality silicone container, it’s always important to properly dispose of these materials. For starters, check your state’s waste and recycling regulations and note that you will typically need to recycle plastic bags separately from your curbside blue box.  Many grocery stores will accept all sorts of plastic recycling, including shopping bags and zip-top bags. Be sure to wash and dry them thoroughly before bringing them to the store to recycle. I personally like to look for signs labeled NexTrex, which collects recyclable materials like plastic bags and turns them into decking. Just think, that plastic bag used to store frozen fruit for smoothies can skip the landfill and instead could be used as material for your back deck.
